Watching this documentary makes me realize how focussed and hard-working progressive rock musicians were. Most musicians would be too busy partying and boozing to ever get projects like this to see the light of day. Incredible work ethic

According to Mason, following Dark Side of the Moon the whole band excepted Waters struggled to get any once of motivation for the next album. Waters would ultimately force them, the band would produce a masterpiece and the cycle would repeat each time until hé just stopped asking them to write anything new. Even during intensive recording weeks the others would leap on any occasion to run away and do anything unrelated to the band, to Waters dismay. It’s crazy to imagine how many parts of their most iconic songs were initially just them procrastinating in the studio.

I didn't like or even listen to Pink Floyd earlier in my life cause the scene that people painted to me about the band and its music was "Stoner and psychedelic hippie rock" and "music to listen when you are high" (I mean you could why not) but my god how confused people are in identifying music, sure the early albums are psychedelic rock but from meddle onwards its a very different genre and really their music is so professional and introspective not in a snobby and pretentious way but in a humble and very human way.

Another band that worked unbelievably hard was Frank Zappa and the Mothers. I believe he was the only artist to ever actually play as a guest with Pink Floyd as early Pink Floyd like Piper was immensely influenced by Zappas first record Freak Out!

The interviews with the band members are good, as well I listened to the Genesis interviews, and they were very much the same. Not only were they up at nine working full days, but both bands were literally performing almost every day. Thats definitely one thing that separated them from a lot of bands, their dedication to working.

Some time in 1979, when I was 9, we had relatives coming to visit our family, and when I told my cousin that I loved Pink Floyd's song 'Another Brick In The Wall', he got excited and said he'd bought the 'The Wall' album and that it was amazing, and he told me he'd copy it on tape for me - I'm still waiting for that tape today! x-))

Gilmore solo on top of wall was the coolest live concert moment I have ever witnessed. The wall show was to far beyond any other live anent at the time. What a fortunate life moment. The opportunity to see Floyd perform the wall live at Nassau Colosseum. I still get chills when I think about it. Oh and the ticket was $15.00.

O man I bet! That’s my favorite guitar solo ever n love playing n that’s awesome you got to see them n the wall live. I saw roger waters do the wall in 2010 n was fucking brilliant n nick mason was there for the last 5,6 songs, but no David or Richard n Gilmores voice is the best n his playing is very inspirational to me. Lol I bet it was just $15, when my dad saw ozzy n Metallica in 1986, I think he said it was $18. Man, how times have changed both would be 10 xs that now. I saw roger a few weeks ago ( fucking excellent no shock there) but it was $115 for 2nd from the very very top of the arena, I imagine the floor was somewhere from $1000-$2000, but was amazing, absolutely loved it

My sentiments exactly. I saw that show on the 3rd night in LA. My only regrets were that I wish I had been older and more aware of the backstory. Arguably one of the greatest rock shows ever. And it cost $15 in LA as well, but they only sold blocks of 6 by lottery. Great job of robbing the scalpers of their business. You had no Idea of what major celebrity might be sitting within a few seats of you

I just love that the idea was born out of such a personal experience that isn't relatable at all to us non rockstars (The disconnect between yourself and your audience), but so many of the songs on the album are relatable and speak to me personally.

My father used to play "The Wall" for me when I was a kid, before I was old enough to discover my own music. It was one of my favorites among his extensive LP collection. He has since passed, I think about him and how much he would have enjoyed seeing this documentary, along with all the other album-related docs online. I wish he could be with me now so we could enjoy them together. Rest in Peace, Dad. And thank you for introducing me to Pink Floyd. I love you.

Richard Wright was done so wrong during this era, he contributed so much, but it wasn't apparent until they let him go. Thankfully David picked him up, and brough his enormous talent back to life, what a dude! The way Wright was treated is what solidified my opinion of Roger, and it has not changed, that's doesn't take anything away from his talent, but that's not all that matters.

I saw the show in L.A. and it's still the most jaw-dropping theater experience I've ever had. Even with all of today's techno stages, The Wall as a live analog spectacle is beyond anything I've witnessed. Literally breathtaking artistry and sophistication. We were in the middle of the balcony, directly in the spotlight shining out from behind Gilmore as he played that solo atop the wall and it was a religious moment of light and music and emotion. Technically, it was something that you just had to be there for. Like the giant puppets, the lighting rigs for the performers slowly moved around the stage with these ominous beams of light. During the recorded part with the groupie in the hotel room, the whole arena went dark and the sound was so clear it seemed like I was actually there in that little room. One of the great showmanship qualities of The Wall was how throughout the whole first act and into the intermission, the tension of bricking away the band was a constant concern. What happens when everyone's behind the wall? I never knew what was coming next, but when it did it was jaw-dropping. The room coming out of the wall? Fantastic! The animation was genius and just went on and on, the images completely captivating and mesmerizing. Just a few memories to share for those who are interested... This video answered so many questions I've had since then. I've been so curious how the tech worked. Really enjoyable, minutely researched, and informative video. Thanks so much.

My girl friend and I drove almost 500 miles to LA to see this show. Seeing the show footage brings back so many memories. We had no idea what to expect and it blew everyone away. I’ll have to look for the pictures I took at that show 42 years ago.

Iv been there 1980 in Dortmund. The comfortably numb solo when David was standing alone up there was indeed unforgettable. the rest of the musicians were playing behind a wall, almost the entire 2nd half of the show. at the end, it collapsed. goosebumps for everyone in the audience for 2 hours.

1979 , my girlfriends mother entered the ticket selection lottery for the first 2 shows , one on the East Coast , Boston or New York , and the other on the West Coast in Los Angeles at the Sports Arena . We got nose bleed , cheap seats , about 50 ft. From the stage and an elevation of maybe 80 ft. above the floor seating . Turned out to be excellent seats as we could look down above the Wall to see all the action behind the stage , and actually see how the bricks were being moved and manipulated , behind the Wall . One of the most memorable of maybe 80 concerts I’ve been to in my life . This video explained everything !

Saw the wall concert about the 3rd or 4th show... It was my 2nd of 3 shows and it was more amazing than you can just imagine.... When the helicopters flew in you thought they were inside the arena. Noise of the engines, the air from the blades blowing down on you , and the lights of the air craft making you believe they were mounted to something big. The Animals concert at the Anaheim Stadium was my first and just as impressive. At the Division Bell it dawned on me , waiting for the band to start playing was part of the experience. And when they did they wait was forgotten as your senses came to life watching the show.

I put The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking to be as good as any Floyd album. I saw Roger play it live with Clapton on guitar in 1984. It's an album about a young man picking up a hitchhiker while speeding through his youth and middle years, by the end of the album the character is an older more mature man who becomes the hitchhiker as he slows down and appreciates life - he seems to travel from the East Coast to the West Coast as a younger man, and as and older man begins hitchhiking back to the East. You have to listen to it over and over like all Floyd albums to pick up all the literal and metaphorical nuances, the story line.

Certainly got into the gritty of this time and where little of it has been spoken of in terms of inner band difficulty, the tour, how all that worked, etc. Nice job. If I had to chose, I still agree with David Gilmour: "...I think we did a damn good job on it [The Wall]...but it...slightly lacks soul to me." Far from my favorite of their works, too. Pink Floyd sold out a week of shows then in '80. I had ordered up my tickets with the first advertisement, in the 'times'. And, i remember going to the show, opening nite of THE WALL concert at the L.A. forum like it was yesterday. Coolest thing was overhead curtains that became engulfed in flame from on stage fireworks, during the first act. Burning embers falling on the stage that that Roger and David were dodging as they fell on the stage. Everyone thought it was part of the act and CHEERED until the show had to be stopped and the fire put out. Man, what a party....e.

It's a little-known fact that Richard and Roger actually reconnected in a way in 1999, when Rick came to one of Roger's show (he was invited by keyboardist Jon Carin, who pleayed in the 1987-1994 Pink Floyd live band but then would go on to actually join Roger's outfit). Rick was invited backstage and apparently the two men talked, although not many details about that are known. You have to bear in mind that while Rick was not part of the court case in the mid 80s, that was basically Gilmour-Mason vs Waters.

I have always thought it ironic that The Wall is such a history of mental disintegration and the descent into depression and madness which was ultimately the CAUSE of Rick's own path into depression. You have seen this very much from Roger's perspective (understandably, given it really was Roger's baby). The other fascinating fact is that after Roger fired Rick, he re-hired him as a simple musician. The whole production cost so much that "Pink Floyd" as an entity LOST money. As a hired musician, however Richard Wright was the only one who actually made any money! One in the eye for Roger, but I don't think it ever made up for the way Roger treated Rick.

How can you think the comment is rambly when it is a description of the entire process of the wall which also is a reference to Syd Barrett who was a member of PF and had a tragic end to his musical career and had multiple references to him in previous Floyd albums while also putting a new light on their creative processes which set the stage for a new era but also resulting in the breakup of the band but had some positive outcomes in terms of Water's solo career as well as Gilmore's Pink Floyd while being a commercial success and Waters autobiography played out in music and on film. Sheesh, I didn't find it rambly at all.

I was at the Los Angeles show. My favorite part of the whole night was when Gilmore did comfortably numb. As he stood on top of The Wall there was very bright lighting behind him which cast a giant shadow at the opposite end of the statium. Larger than life in all respects.

I was 15 when wall came out. Loved it and still listen to it. 1st night of wall tour in 1980 at Nassau Coliseum. Crowd outside was nuts. We couldn't get in. Music started. A guy went nuts took a barricade from police set up and threw it into window. We went in together ran in behind the wall . Chased by security we out ran them got around to the right side of the wall. It was incredible. 😎

The movie was featured at the midnight movies selection for a few years while I was a teenager pretty much every weekend. We'd be like, "Dawn of the Dead was last weekend, what ya say, The wall again? Sure 7 times a charm."

Excellent Review! Loved every minute of this! After seeing Floyd's Animals concert at Anaheim stadium in 77, I was not about to miss the Wall tour and fortunate to see this concert on Feb 10 which happened to be me and my best friends birthday. The only way to get tickets for that show was by mail in. They weren't offered at Ticketron, so we sent in a copy of our licenses with a note and the cheque and received 6 awesome seats. It was my 18th and this was without a doubt the best birthday memory of my life. Combined with the movie a few years later, which was the beginning of my experimenting with psychedelics in life. Floyd was the soundtrack of my youth! By the way, at the time I had no idea who Bob Geldof was. Pink Floyd will always be my favorite band of all time!

1985 Kingston Ontario Canada we finally got a VHS copy of the movie just when my buddies and I got home from a Greatful Dead tour and had a Dozen sheets of SUPER CLEAN ACID. We popped some doses and watched the movie whilst tripping our balls off then spent the rest of the trip around a bonfire listening to Roy Harper "What ever happened to jugula", as that album was awaiting us too.... That's my memory of the Wall movie!!!

Exceptional video. There was very little I didn't know about Pink Floyd and the Wall album. I am a huge fan of Pink Floyd. I enjoyed some of their concerts as well as David's concert or Roger's concert after the band dissolved. But this video is so well put together. I learned here that Bob Geldof refused the role in the film originally. His exceptionally bored and ignorant performance makes so much more sense now.

I was at the opening night show in Los Angeles with my mail order only tickets. 2nd row loge seats, about 8ft. from the wall. Could see visuals on the front of the wall, as well as the band playing behind it. Also, was right next to the spot where Roger is in the hotel room. Also, was the person spot lit during the song "In the flesh pt. 2" as the one smoking a joint. lol...oh, and a fire onstage they had to pause the show for. Best live show i have ever seen..by far.

They were great shows the first year I was at the back but due to the booking system the second year we were 3 seats back fom the front the projections and sound made it seem a lot darker.Afterwards we drove back to Wiltshire and straight into stonehenge for a week.

And yes... Before the wall.. You can truly hear Richard White contribution to Pink Floyd. Being a Pink Floyd fan.. But during the wall and the Final Cut not at all.. Until David Gilmour told Rodger Waters the f*** off. Then we have momentary lapse of reason and The Division Bell. And Richard Wright was there.. Until the endless river.. Some of those songs sounds like they should have been on wish you was here...

Roger is a Genius ! We might sometimes blame him, but without Roger, no Dark Side, no WYWH, no Animals and no Wall. WYWW has been my favorite Floyd albums until lately but I realize more and more how good and well produced is the Wall.

The first time they did The Wall, in Los Angeles, they started a fire on stage and had to stop the show. I was there. They took a break to clear the air, then Waters had to direct them to back up the film until it was at the right spot...then they continued from where they stopped. Fireworks (that they backed off on for future shows) lit a curtain up above the stage on fire. A couple guys rode it down, to make it come down faster...and the flames kicked up and they jumped before it got all the way down. I also saw the premier of the movie release in Westwood. It was supposed to be one show for fans and celebs, but it was so many people Waters made the celebs wait and let us fans see the first showing!

I was there at the very first show also. Everything you say is correct. It sucked that it got stopped but we got to see that part twice. That worked for me. Loved that show. Saw the Animals tour, my second concert ever. They played Dark Side, Wish You Were Here and Animals all in one show. Most of Dark Side. Both shows were awesome.

Ok, so I have something important to say: people think the fueds and breakup of Pink Floyd is due to clashing Egos, and to an extent they're correct, but Pink Floyd was never a pop band - they were lyricists and musicians trying to lay bare their thoughts, emotions and opinions in a creative way. They all felt a strong entitlement to the name, because it was under that banner by which they had bared their souls for decades, and when viewed through that lens, the "I will have sole creative lead" thing makes infinitely more sense, even if it's still a little immature.

The fact that ''What shall we do now'' was cut from the album is an absolute crime. To me the jump from ''Empty spaces'' to ''Young lust'' is too abrupt without it, doesn't flow as well. Thankfully it was included in the movie soundtrack 🙏

"Empty Spaces" is actually a reprise of "What Shall We Do Now" and was meant to appear before "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 3". They were separate songs...

Fun fact: Richard Wright ended up being the ONLY core member to make a profit playing on the tour since he was no longer a "member of the band", he was paid his wages as a "backup musician" & thus had no stake in the debt the band was trying desperately to correct...

I was at the second show of the Wall in L.A. There was a hole in the wall before they completed it. Twenty feet to one side and about 30 feet above the drum kit. In the middle of a song every member of the band appeared in that whole, including Nick Mason.

Seeing Roger Waters on his Us + Them tour in 2016 was one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Also, I totally understand why Roger had his "meltdown" on stage at their last In The Flesh tour show. He'd finally had enough of the disrespect and snapped. I don't blame him.

I attended the show in Earls Court London, it was truly spectacular. As you pointed out Comfortably Numb was epic with Roger on a single spotlight standing at the top of the wall. It was pure theatre and musical genius. I can still picture in my mind's eye being at the gig and seeing and hearing the music.

I have seen Roger perform the wall back in 2010 and to this very day it has been the very best live music / theater shows I have ever seen or heard the sound quality was like listening to a recording at home it was truly epic . The other I would say equally best concerts with equal sound and great light / visual etc.etc. was Ironically with the David Gilmore, Richard Write and the comparable Nick Mason on July 12th 1994 @ Soldier Field in Chiraq in the rain tripping balls on majic mushrooms that was a just almost life altering event and we honest to goodness had the best seats in house we could see every thing and we were protected from the rain because we were under the sky box suites .

Great analysis, the making of the album is a saga unto itself - totally in line with the albums theme. In spite of this being Rogers complete idea and work, the album does illustrate what it is that made Pink Floyd who they were. The demos are totally complete in idea and structure but Gilmour made the album sound like Pink Floyd, something Roger could not do on his own. If you listen to Pros and Cons it is immediately glaring what's missing. They needed each other. Its a shame that neither party would ever admit that.

I only saw Pink Floyd live once at the Sun Devils Stadium in Tempe Arizona as I was traveling around the USA in 94. Perhaps not the greatest venue but it was an event for the ages for me. Love the Floyd...oh by the way, which one's Pink?
