I am 71 years old, just started 18/6 in mid-February, cut out sugar and very limited carbo intake. I am an avid cyclist doing about 50 miles twice a week, additionally I do rowing machine and stationary bike on the days I am not cycling outside. My weight dropped unintentionally from 162 lbs to 150, I am still cycling with the same routine. Here’s the thing, during the days I go cycling without stopping for lunch I don’t feel hungry, instead I feel a continuous supply of energy from within. What a great discovery of ketone power and intermittent fasting!

Dear Dr Phinney, I practiced Keto after watching videos from Dr Berg, Dr Fung and others. I did not have the privilege of meeting any doctor who could help me apart from prescribing more and more medications. By just watching and following those Keto videos I lost 15kg and 5 inches of my waist. I agree with you that it is not as simple as no sugar no carb diet but there is no other way but through self experimentation and making improvements because most mainstream medical practitioners are of no help at all.

@@AlbaVirus01 - Yes, Rudolp Diesel designed the engine named after him to run on peanut oil in the late 1800s. Back then, seed oils were used in industry. In 1913 he 'disappeared' off a ship. Supposedly he committed suicide, even though he was on his way to a business meeting - to discuss the potential used of his engine by the British. He had refused to give the German military exclusive rights to use his engine. This is probably still the best use of seed oils - corn oil, soybean oil, rapeseed and canola oil, etc as well as peanut oil. A few years ago, a farmer in Penn. was reported to have produced enough oil, which was pressed on the farm, from a 2 acre plot of canola or rapeseed oil to run his tractors and heat the farm machinery workshop for a year. (Canola is a type of rapeseed bred with reduced levels of certain toxins to make it 'safe' for human consumption.) in warmer climates, peanuts are a better choice. As a legume, they add nitrogen to the soil. After the oil has been pressed from the peanuts, the meal is excellent food for hogs and their pigs.

@@Jefferdaughter I agree, we should be burning these seed oils in our vehicles. We can also make ethanol to run the gasoline engines. I'm not a global warmer and don't buy into the theory that Co2 is pollution that causes global warming. I just think we should convert over to using ethanol and seed oils so that we can have cheaper fuel. All of these soybean farmers that are dependent on China to buy their beans, could start raising other crops that could be sold in the US to make ethanol and seed oils such as the rapeseed you talked about.

I have lost 22 lb and feel great and eat less in just a month. All I did is reducing my carbs from 200+ gr a day to less than 80 gr. And I started to fast using 8/16 formula than I fasted 24h and 40h. I was able to fast with absolutely no problem because I don't crave sugar anymore. I can say with confidence that I am out of sugar addiction. My blood pressure went down to normal after being prescribed medication that I never accepted to take. I used to run a lot, half marathons and full marathons but was running on carbohydrates. As soon as I slowed my exercising due to injuries I gained a lot of weight and went back to square one. I think my body is now adapted to ketones as I just did 48 h fasting and feel great. I will never go back to carbs again. I am refining my diet by listening to my body. This is life-changing information. Thank you, Dr. Stephen, for being part of this scientific movement. Our health system is not working. If I followed what was prescribed to me, I would have a miserable life without a doubt.

Stephen you must be aware the majority of us started this without the help of any doctor, especially up here in Canada where most are idiots when it comes to nutrients and how they are used by the body or that metabolism is controlled by hormones. I love this way of life. I have read both your books along with many others and have enough medical knowledge to throw out the miss information and believe me there are so few that know what they are talking about. I also heard you speak in San Diego. I, along with so many others had no other choice to reverse our metabolic syndrome but take on this lifestyle on our own. When I started 2 years ago, I was told I was "going to die". I had no support from dieticians or doctors up here in Canada. My fatty liver is no longer, my HbA1c went from 5.7 to 5.1, I no longer require a C-Pap machines, I no longer have severe edema (it left in about one week), my lipids all corrected, my CRP dropped from 3.0 to .07, my weight went from 200 pounds to 127 (5 foot 4 inches) that I don't do anything to control besides controlling carbs. I eat to satisfaction and only eat when hungry. Of all the things I am so glad are gone is hunger. As my insulin resistance was so bad, I obviously had elevated insulin levels and that drives this constant hunger. I had difficulty focusing during the day as I was always seeking or thinking about food. Respect your insulin and glycogon is what I say.

Same in Germany. The main issue here is the connection or synergy between medicine and nutrition. I have a diabetologist, who knows nothing about nutrition and a nutritionist who knows nothing about type 1 diabetes. The diabetologist tells me to make sure to reduce my insulin injections, when ketosis sets in, but doesn't know by how much The nutritionist does not have a clue about net carbs and also keeps suggesting foods and recipes that would easily amount to 170 grams of carbs per day. I would love to have supervision, if there were ANY physicians or nutritionists who actually knew about LCHF (Keto) in Germany. For now, I will just continue to read and follow the latest medical research as well as trust in the advice of people like Dr. Phinney.

Vast majority of my health issues especially hormonal related got fixed and never returned such as high androgens, PCOS, acne, pms, heavy period bleedin, cramping, indigestion, depression, weak imune system, respiratory infections. This are all gone ever since. I am living a healthy and mentaly happy life, full of hope. We are what we eat. 🥬🥒🥦🍓🍋🥕🥑🍆

Stage 4 high grade serous carcinoma ovarian cancer for 2 half years. Did two rounds of chemos with 3 relapses. The last time the cancer returned with normal diet my ca125 blood markers climbed over 100 points in 2 weeks. The second relapse on keto they went up only 46 points in 6 weeks. My oncologist put me on letrozole after this ... a hormone blocker and now with fasting and keto my cancer markers have regressed from 105 to 67 ca125. I'm a fan of keto. Thank you.

Sorry to hear about your cancer. Google "Joe Tippen's protocol". Joe is a guy from Oklahoma that was all over the local news a few years ago, because he cured his stage four lung cancer with fenbendazole dog wormer. This cure is being suppressed by big pharma and the billion dollar chemo industry. The cure was actually an accidental discovery. Scientists were using mice for cancer research and gave the mice fenbendazole to control the parasites. Soon they noticed that the mice were being cured of their cancer after being given fenbendazole. Good luck and God Bless.

As people who regularly test their blood glucose levels and have compared with others doing the same already know, individual responses to the same amount of a particular food can vary pretty significantly. This is also true for responses to protein. However, generally speaking, protein does not trigger insulin levels to the same degree that sugar, high-sugar fruits (like bananas), or refined starches (like pasta) does. Atkins was misunderstood as recommending a high protein diet. We forget, or never knew, how much more fat all the meats contained when he wrote his book! Skinless chicken was unheard of, and even pieces came with the bone. Pork was juice and had FAT. Beef was well-marbled, and the fat was not all trimmed off the steaks. Lamb was more commonly enjoyed, and lamb is a rich (fatty) meat, too.

I cycled carbs back in for a bit and I could feel certain things coming back like a pain in my toes that I forgot went away. My allergies started to come back. So yeah, I love Keto.

But there is a Functional Medicine Doctor who can. Dr Dunn. In Downingtown pa if you want all the proper testing done and understanding of the data explained. But save your money. Just get healthy. Functional Medicine doctors are not coved by insurance. I took my son to one dr Molders and it cost me 1000.00 out of pocket. But the insurance company would pay for dangerous mind altering drugs and psychological dr visits. The Psychologist can prescribe drugs and not have a PHD in biochemistry. Having been a dietician for 32 years working with people's dietary histories and perspectives on food I don't agree that overseeing this is only a physician's job. The managing dietician has to be intrinsically involved, as the physician does not spend 25 % of the time with the patient on the topic of practical nutrition than the dietician does. Please start giving us credit for helping people do the right things and also help them stop worrying and wondering exactly what to do. We take care of all of that. We agree that dieticians can provide helpful guidance and education! Our patients have access to a physician (who can oversee progress and manage medications) as well as a health coach (often an RD) who gives practical nutrition guidance and involves the physician when necessary.

I am so grateful that this talented trainer has made free videos to empower individuals to learn what are their underlying health issues and how to approach ketosis to support the healing process. I do not wish to be disrespectful Annchen and would dearly love to know where in your dietitian training you were given extensive information about healthy ketosis management?

I had my visit with a diabetes educator Jan 23, 2019 after my dx of DM2. She was not open at all to a ketogenic diet and stated quite clearly stated she only teaches what she was taught 30 years ago and what the ADA and the hospital she was associated with. Her recommendation was 40-100 grams of carbs at each meal. No thank you, I'll pass on that antiquated information. I'm sure a dietician open to a keto diet would indeed be helpful but my experience with this is not a positive one and would unlikely waste my insurances money going to one again.

Dr. Phinney, thank you for taking the time to produce this video which is extremely informative and helpful. I'd like to add, after living a ketogenic lifestyle for the past six months and losing 30 lbs, any symptoms of arthritis and my IBS symptoms, is that avocados are an excellent source of the fats you reference. I also supplement my daily intake of fats with MCT oil if I find I'm short after dinner. And lastly, I find the Carb Manager app invaluable in calculating the fat/carb/protein components of the foods I eat. I struggled with keeping to the ratios you suggest before I found it.

The key here is following the diet properly. As an exercise physiologist and health coach for the last 3 decades, I have had countless people come to me in horrible health after following a ketogenic diet. What I find is that a lot of people think they can eat any kind of meats including fried pork and they will be fine. I have people that eat bacon/pork sausage and eggs on a daily basis and their health has deteriorated. I have others with low testosterone and other hormonal deficiencies due to eating animals that were injected with hormones. Following the diet properly is key and a lot of people lack direction and end up in worse health!

An added bonus I wasn’t even expecting is from when I started to present which is now 5 months…I have not had one single IBS flare up. My gastro intestinal tract is so calm. I used to get at least 1 to 2 bad stomach aches and bloating a week…now it is all at peace ☺️. I don’t know what the issue was before…but it’s gone now…I eat dairy and eggs and meat with green veggies. Not a single issue.

Mine experience is very much like "Changling" below. I've been on the Ketogenic diet for about two months now and I have lost 20 Lbs with absolutely no exercise, partly because I have physical problems that keep me from getting my heart rate up to 120. I was obese at 240 while only 5'8". I made a vow to myself that if could get down to 220 I would start exercising any way I could to augment the diet. Today was my first purposeful walk, in almost four years, not including those excursions to the grocery and Costco. What most on this diet do not realize is that when you lose weight you are essentially not only burning fat, you are also burning muscle, so I will be doing some weight lifting as well along with normal calisthenics. Remember also when you lose too much too fast your Gluteus Maximus disappears and the reason that you'll need to exercise those muscles to build them up so you have something to hang your pants on.

I started doing a ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting (8/16) and walking 10 000 steps each day in late August. In under 4 months, I lost 18 KG. ALL my health issues were gone. Blood pressure like 25-year-old (I´m 45). In late December I went back to a "normal" diet, listening to my doctors "advice". Two months in and I feel really sick. My Dr is stubborn, I do not have a long term health problem but I know something is wrong. When I ask my doctor why are my rbc's elevated, he says I don't know and mcv's low, (not real low) he gives me iron. Then I asked why are you giving me iron, am I anemic. He said your not anemic. Then why are you giving me iron and why are my rbc' s elevated. I did not take the iron. For years, I have been extremely fatigue, migraines, headaches, sinus, joint pain, rashes, nose bleeds, dizziness, acid reflux, motility, slow metabolism, low blood pressure, low body temp, and they insist your thyroid is fine, everything is fine. Nonsense. I decided to take matters into my own hands and stop listening to stubborn doctors who don't care. After much prayer, I seem to fit into the adrenal fatigue. I also kept getting yeast breakouts and I know yeast love sugar. That bug was making me crave sugar too. I decided to fight it. I did research. I started the keto diet. I listen to my body symptoms, if I have pain or sinus inflammation or nose bleeds, I know that food is not good for me, so I stop the food, (once was organic milk), and that worked. My joint paint and headaches are subsiding and I am loosing weight. I'm not relying on my doctors because they never listened to me to begin with and don't care. I'll take care of myself and get out of their system and hopefully never see them again. I have had years of misery. They really should teach nutrition to doctors. Doctors should listen to their patients.

I used to feel tired all the time and take naps throughout the day but I've had so much more steady energy on a keto diet.

I’m so glad he was confident enough in saying one can eat this way for weeks months and decades. So great. Although I practice vegan keto, it’s still so superb

Useful information. My question is how do I go about finding a physician that has adequate information and experience in this? You often hear how important it is to have supervision, but no one ever gives you guidance in how to find the right, qualified person.

I have started eating only 2 times a day between noon and 6pm and have a couple coffee in the morning and I only drink water. No sugars or rarely. I have dropped 55 pounds in 6 months. I have a a couple of fainting spells though since. I do not have any health issues that I know of. I eat an Avocado a day in a wrap with lettuce and some bell pepper and for supper always a good home cooked meal. I eat kosher as well. The dizziness has happened in the mornings 3 x so far with one that made me pass out for about a minute. Could it be low nutrients in the morning from not eating since the day before? Generally I feel ok, I do suffer already from severe chronic pain and major depressive disorder severe and chronic. I have dealt with this for 11 years and it's not going away. So was just curious if eating two times a day and cutting out most carbs is ok.

I'm a long distance cyclist and would like to learn more about endurance sports and nutrition. There are many lifestyle channels that provide information on what to eat and when, however, at best, the information is inconsistent. I follow the ketosis lifestyle including intermittent fasting. Very interested in learning more about nutrition especially as it applies to endurance sports i.e. cycling. I've been following your KZbin Channel. Excellent content. Thanks for sharing the science of nutritional ketosis.

I agree here We started Keto after being Vegan for 6 years... The main reason why we changed over was the health benefits. I had a heart attack at year 6 of a vegan diet, and I was able to cure my heart and vessels, and arteries changing over to the keto diet.

I was 🛌 bound at 620 pounds. I went more carnivore. I do eat some vegetables. I'm down to 486 near a year. In a standstill but I'm still fighting . I was swimming 6 days a week but I been having major symtoms with whizzing and chest pain on exertion. Did a heart ultrasound and a contrast ct scan. I past them both. Doing a stress test Oct 6 and another sleep test on the 13th. I have major sleep apnea breathing trouble at night even on 20 with cpap. I get medicare 2020. I need a better cardiologist. She is old school which is out dated. We don't see eye to eye. I wish this doctor would reach out. Watch all of his stuff. Not many MD's I would trust. He is the real deal

very informative even though i am whole food plant based, I have nothing against the keto diet. both diets work and can disrupt the pharmaceutical and healthcare/insurance industries when they figure out that we can control our lives with proper nutrition and some exercise which does more than they could ever with drugs and tests and procedures while gouging us for money
