I have used virtualbox, Hyper-V, and VMware workstation player. I like to test them out.

Sure if you run Core in a server environment Hyper-V is not a beginner hypervisor. In reality though someone who wants to run Hyper-V at home on Windows 10 simply goes into Features and turns it on and at that point from their point of view it’s not different than virtual box in concept.

This has been my recent experience just trying to install Ubuntu server 24.04 Virtual Box: Not as fast, but easier to get up and going. Easier to setup networking and port forwarding. Also, if if the session locks up or won't shut down, it's easier to just stop it. Hyper-V: (win 11 pro) It not hard to install, your basically just enabled it as s feature. It is fast. It just seems to lack the configureability of Virtual Box. I had to stop Ubuntu server install mid way through. HyperV would not let me stop the session. I had to use powershell as admin to locate the VM id and kill it that way. If I really needed to run a production use VM I would probably still use this for performance, but as a learning tool to tinker with os distro's its not a great place to start.

I've recently ran into a problem running VirtualBox on a Windows 10 Pro machine that also had Hyper-V enabled. In fact, I was forced to remove Hyper-V until a patch is made.

Is Hyper-V similar to KVM in Linux? does Hyper-V support GPU passthrough?
@TrustRadius2 жыл бұрын
Hyper-V does support GPU passthrough, there are a few tutorials online that can walk you through it. I'm not actually familiar with using KVM on Linux myself, so I can't speak to how they compare directly.

@TrustRadius3 жыл бұрын
As long as you have your installation file, it should be possible as with any virtualization machine. I've heard some limitations around the 32 bit (if you're running a 64 bit machine), but those issues appear isolated to specific situations.

@@erenyeagersasageyo if you have a high performance on your hardware it is better use virtual box it supports all versions of linux, if you have a computer with lower performance then use Hyper Visor.

@@raedallo2980 ohh nvm, hyper v is a type 1 hypervisor so it has full control of the systems hardware and vbox is type two so it asks to use a user set amount... so that makes sense

You can, but you will most likely need to find an ISO Windows XP file to get it up and going. Also be sure to set your virtual graphics, processing, and ram levels.

Help please. I'm looking to run old software and games on modern hardware and Windows 10. Will W10 Hyper-V work well with Win95 and XP VMs? I've always used VirtualBox in the past. Are there performance or feature caveats between Hyper-V vs VirtualBox?
@TrustRadius2 жыл бұрын
They should perform similarly provided you set it up properly to run what you need to. I’m currently using Virtualbox to review software and only hit snags when I didn’t have enough processor or graphics bandwidth set. I’m not sure about Win95, but XP or vista should work well.
