The ladies in the park you were chatting with had a pretty heavy Beijing local accent and they were speaking pretty fast, which is probably why you had a bit of a struggle carrying on the conversation. But making conversations with local is definitely an effective way to improve your Chinese.

This is one of the very few videos of the parks in Beijing I have seen where is quiet, and of course, beautiful. I don't mind watching people doing Tai Chi but am not fond of people singing in the park. It happens more often in the summer or course. Perhaps you can join the "stretching" group one day.:) For those who live in Hutongs, some are actually extremely wealthy, except they live behind those red gates. They can hide their wealth but have to park their fancy cars on the streets. A realtor can show you some of these fancy homes or look them up online. Thank you for this great video!

Chinese people call Shanghai the Magical Capital. Beijing is called the Imperial Capital. There is something, I can’t tell exactly, the atmosphere, the people, the architectures or the roads, that you only feel in Beijing. You should definitely sit outside in summer with a beer in hands:).

Chinese started to practice in outdoor public space after 1949 “开展体育活动，增强人民体质”，it’s totally “communism “ thing by Chair Mao “in that time Everything is free , education, hospitals ,house etc . You wont find that tradition in HK , Taiwan because it’s one country two systems, people there only choice is go to the gym .

Walk or take bike to the south-east of San Miao Jie, you can go along more old Hutong, then Liu Li Chang, and then to Qianmen.

Actually not all the Hutongs are the same looking as them in the tourist locations. A lot of them have been undergoing expension and development and are more or less the same as just normal streets nowadays.

Lauran, with due respect, the ladies were asking you, how long you have live in China; are you a student here and generally praising your ability to speak Mandarin. Yes, the dancing aunties and grandmas have taken off in Malaysia too and most mornings and evenings, large group of ladies will perform line dancing or just dancing to the music. As your husband rightly pointed out, there should be fence rail along railway tracks in the station to prevent injuries to passengers in the event of a mishap. The other thing the West can learn is not to daub the walls with graffitis and instead paint murals like you saw. It is more civilised and aesthetically pleasing than profanities scrawled on walls. It always jarred my senses when I come back to the West to see railway lines daubed with really vulgar words.
