Sometimes a once in a lifetime opportunity presents itself and you take it. Traveling to Easter Island (known locally as Rapa Nui and in Spanish as Isla de Pascua) was something we never thought possible in our lifetimes. However, when a short-time discounted airfare was available, we snapped it up and with an opportunity to explore the island slowly, we spent time hiking, walking and renting a vehicle to cover as much as the island as possible. The following Easter Island travel video is our best attempt to document our day to day adventure in the form of a series of vlogs from Day 1 to Day 7. We feel that if you're going to experience the best Easter Island has to offer you had better give yourself a 4 to 7 days.
Our visit Easter Island travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including all of the various moai statues, beaches and best locations for sunset and sunrise photos. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Easter Island tourism brochure.

Visiting Easter Island Travel Documentary (Isla de Pascua - Rapa Nui) Polynesia Video Transcript:
After close to a month travelling around Chile, Sam and I hopped on a plane to visit Easter Island, known locally as Rapa Nui. This was the closest we were ever going to get to this remote speck in the ocean, which also happens to be the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle. We gave ourselves one full week to explore Isla de Pascua, and what follows is a travel guide of our time there. We hiked ancient volcanoes, stood face to face with the moai, watched spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and road tripped around the island while wild horses ran alongside. It was an incredible week and we hope this video will inspire you to plan your own visit to Easter Island.
Rano Kau is 324 meters tall and it is located on the southwestern tip of Rapa Nui. We hiked all the way from town, and because of it’s gradual incline, we found it to be a relatively easy activity. That being said, we would recommend doing it early in the morning, since there were very few shaded areas along the way.
Orongo is a village and ceremonial site located just past the Rano Kau Crater. Unfortunately, it started pouring rain shortly after we reached the site, so we didn’t get to visit, but we made plans to return later that week.
That evening we made our way into Hanga Roa to watch the sun set from the harbour. There were lots of surfers out on the water, and the waves kept rolling in and crashing against the rocks.
After the market we took a walk to Ahu Tahai, which is a ceremonial complex that holds 3 different ‘ahus’ or platforms with moai. Perhaps the most famed of the three is Ahu Ko Te Riku, which stands out from the rest because it has restored eyes.
Having already visited Ahu Tahai by day, we still made it a point to come in the late afternoon.
Rano Raraku is yet another volcano crater found on the island, and it is also the site of the quarry that supplied the stone for the hundreds of moai that can be found on the island. The quarry is believed to have been in use for a span of 500 years up until the early 18th century when activity ceased. It would also appear that this site was abandoned in a rush since many of the moai here are unfinished.
After seeing the moai scattered on the slopes of the volcano, we took a little detour and hiked into the crater. We also spotted wild horses and a few moai inside the crater, which was quite unexpected.
From there we continued on to Ahu Tongariki for a quick visit. This site is home to 15 moai, making it the biggest ‘ahu’ on the island.
The best place to catch the sunrise in Rapa Nui is at Ahu Tongariki. We made the drive in the dark and we arrived just as the sky was beginning to show it’s soft morning colours.
One of the best decisions we made on our trip was to rent a car so that we would have the ability to explore all of Easter Island.
And just like that our week on Easter Island was up! Rapa Nui is one of the most fascinating places we have ever visited, and we loved getting to explore every inch of the island.
This is part of our Travel in Easter Island Rapa Nui (Isla de Pascua) series.

You give a good picture of the island; it is very different from what I imagined. I have never heard about the wild horses. The stray dogs; obviously not as scary aa they looked! Loved the sunset scenes. Thanks from Norway and Larvik; the birth town of Thor Heyerdahl.

+Kari H Thank you! Those were some of the biggest surprises for us as well. We knew we'd encounter wild horses but we didn't realize how many there would be. Also, the stray dogs were wonderful companions and all very friendly. No dogs barked at us the entire time we were on the island :)

Thanks for the video - it was really well put together. Not too long, not too short - it's rare I watch stuff like this and don't end up "zapping" through a lot of it. I'm retiring within the next year or two, and plan to go off more or less immediately on a world tour of "odd" islands, and of course Easter Island is top of the list. Your video has only cemented its place there, and you've given me plenty to think about on the subject. I appreciate your advice of taking at least 4-7 days there and highly doubt if I will take less than 7. Thank you again.

The part of the couple was played with gusto and verve and the dogs had a delightful cameo role. It was a puckish satire of contemporary mores, a droll spoof aimed more at the heart than the head. As for me I'm planning on spending the next three days in a brothel.

We will visit Santiago for a week before going home. I watched your You Tube videos on both Valparaiso and Santiago and taken down notes to where to visit and eat. Thanks much! Looks like an interesting place. At least at the end you had a great week by looking at the video. it is only a place that I have visited in my flightsim quite a few time in the club that I am in, it has featured in at last 4 of our 10 World Tours. Also at the end a great pic of the take off and in the best viewing part of the plane. 5 rows behind the wings.

+Paul Lunn Thank you! Yes, it was overall a fantastic week. We lucked out by having great weather and we made the right decision to rent a car instead of taking tours. Not only did we get to see more of the island but we got to do it at our own pace.

Hey guys, awesome video of the island. Definitely a place on my bucket list for sure! What part of the island did you stay on? I tried to find it in your video info but couldn't. Can you recommend any accommodation specifically, for example the one you guys stayed in? So many options!

was to Rapa Nui in January '16. We've seen other ancient cultural structures and artifact, and Rapa Nui is our favourite. We didnt know, but Carnival was occurring during our visit, which made each night spectacular. The entire island gathers in their traditional clothing and there are various artists that play from sundown until around 4 am. There are over 800 Moai scattered around the island. The day tours are ~$250 USD per person, and so is the rental of a vehicle. We took the vehicle. We went off road and found some areas not mentioned on a map; actually the maps are very archaic and rudimentary. There are also 3 (I think) places that are natural heritage sites and you will need a pass to enter. You can get them at the airport as you arrive. I would suggest that you stay as long as you can. Meet some of the locals, whom are very nice. The island is not 'touristy', so meet the people, some of whom may be Rapa Nui. If you go to the post office (main street to by) you can get a Rapa Nui stamp in your passport, kind of cool! You should be able to walk without difficulty if you want to enjoy the spender of this island. Although its small, if you just stop, get out of your vehicle, and wander, you will find many delights. We stayed at a hotel. As the lady says in the video, the accommodations are basic, but you have everything you need. Also you will need an adaptor for anything electronic. And for us, we had a bit of a medical issue and the hotel was well prepared to help us. Visit Isla de Pascua, you will not regret one moment.

Hotu Matua is the older brother to Hotu Roa. Hotu Roa was the Captain of the Tainui Canoe that left Rapa Nui in search of another land to live in and following the Southern Cross Star Constellation bought them to New Zealand(Aoetearoa) The descendants of the Tainui Canoe are the Waikato people located on the west side of North Island in New Zealand.

Great video! Easter Island looks so pretty. It almost felt as if we were there with you guys! Just have a question, do you remember what the restaurant you went to at 13:43 was called? The food looks really good! Also, what is the ice cream placed called at 14:55. The Raspberry Ginger sounds delicious. looks really good! If I ever go, those places would seem nice to visit. Thank you.

Hey Guys, I love your videos, please keep up your good work. My wife and I are planning on an Easter Island trip this coming November. We are on a budget trip, so we are thinking that we can hike the trails on our own. Did you guys hire or purchased hiking tour on some of your hiking adventures? Thanks.
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 6 жыл бұрын
Hiring your own vehicle and doing in yourself is what we'd recommend to see most of the island. You can do the hiking by yourself for sure. You'll definitely save money doing it this way and to be honest it is nicer to be on your own schedule. I would only recommend the tours if you're pressed for time.

What an awesome video. We are in the process of planning a trip for December of this year. I have a question; On day 3 you talk about the Rapa Nui stamp that you just got in your passport. Did they not stamp your passport when you arrived? What does that particular stamp represent? Where did you get that one and how is it different?

Easter Island is on my bucket list. When is the best time of the year to get there and why? If I travel round trip directly from Fort Myers, Florida, the air fare alone is more or less $1,900. How much did you spent on food daily, the car rental and so on. I saw on your video that you paid $850 for the small house. Thanks!

Hi. I plan to visit the island in the second half of February 2019 with my 8 year old son. I begin by thanking this magnificent video that gave me a good view of the island. Let me put some questions to help me prepare my trip and stay. As for the accommodation, did you reserve it in advance or did that when you arrived on the island? Is the car the only vehicle that can be rented or is there another, for example a 4-wheel motorcycle? Does the rental of this vehicle have to be done in advance or can it be done directly on the spot? Is access to the tourist points free or is it necessary to purchase tickets to access them? I look forward to your response and thank you in advance. Thank you one more time.
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That is really exciting to hear. We reserved our place online a few weeks before arriving. I believe we used booking dot com. The car we reserved on the spot. I'm not entirely sure about motorcycles and atvs but would image they would have them. We booked the vehicle on the spot. It is easy to arrange by just going into town. Some are free but major ones have a fee. You can actually get a ticket for all access points on the island right after arriving from your flight or you can purchase entrance tickets at attraction.

My theory on how they moved the statues. They carved them and left a long narrow rectangular projection on the backs. They slid them on to a tract that resembles a sliding dimmer switch. They simply slid them down a cushioned pathway created out of Palm leaves saturated with beeswax thus a frictionless surface. Once the statues were down the mountain they used compressed beeswax slabs that were strapped or wedged into that angled space under the front base. Once the statues were in place the vein at the back was carved off and the base levelled the same way. To onlookers at the base of the mountain it would appear that the statues walked down the mountain.
