It might be because it's a very British thing. I had it in my private school in Canada, but it had little meaning and we only had it because the school was trying to copy better local private schools, who in turn were copying English ones. In public schools it never is a thing here.

@chriswyatt98693 жыл бұрын
It’s really not. You seen Harry Potter right? I could explain how my school did it, if that helps visualise it, mine had 4 houses, some may be different but still same applies. As you enter secondary school your new year group is divided into 4 houses - usually something to do with the school or areas history - each with different logos and colours. That house is school wide, from all years and you come together to represent your house in sporting events and other competitions (often with a cup and year winner at the end). House colours are often also reflected in your school uniform/ pe kit. You may have a different trim of your school badge on blazer, different accents on your tie (mine depend on year rather than house though) or have different colours on pe socks, shirts and rugby tops etc. Forms are what the year group is divided into and are exclusively of your house in that year. There are often 2 forms for a house for a year group. Or 4. You’re divided into a class size roughly and allocated a tutor, who’s just a teacher with extra responsibilities. You can often choose some people from your primary school as preferences for your form so you’re not totally alone. You stick with your form for your entire school time up till year 11. You meet usually first thing in morning for like 15 minutes and your tutor lets you know what’s going on for the day, and then you meet after lunch for like 30 minutes-1hr, and do more personal development type things. Most of the time it was just an excuse to piss around. This is all allocated to a unique form room (just a classroom), that the form students basically have responsibility for at the end of things regardless if you have classes in there or not, need to keep it tidy, put chairs away etc and maintain/decorate the form’s board on the wall. For year 7 and 8, your form will become your class for most subjects - English, science etc but not for all and this if further relaxed once going up in years with the introduction of sets (based on ability), carousel choices (rotar subjects like DT, food tech etc that change each term), preferences for year 9 (more catered specialised choices within broad subjects - i.e different types of art or DT etc) and then GCSE selection choices for year 10 and year 11 which is of course the subjects you want to be listed on your qualifications and where you can depart school if you want (16yo). For all this divisions and such you are usually kept within one side of your year. As each house for each year is divided into two forms. Let’s say your house name begins with a P. In year 7 you will become either a 7p1 or a 7p2, and as you go on that becomes 8p1 and 8p2 and so on. You stay on your side of the year meaning for all your classes you’re only mixing with other forms that are also a 7*house name* 1. So for your entire school time. it is entirely possible you do not have classes with an entire half of your school year, as was the case for me. I didn’t know a lot of people until sixth form (high school equivalent basically for 16-18 year olds) where the housing and form system broke down and more relaxed. For private schools and posher ones, forms or houses also get communal common areas where you can chill if you don’t have classes - sometimes fitted with small kitchen, snooker table, sofa etc. And the system is even more confusing with longer school days, prep time, games time, free time etc. After writing that it now seems a lot more confusing lol, particularly so cos I didn’t explain it that well, but growing up it feels very normal and easy to follow, find it odd that it’s not the same in the US as I think it really does work. That was just my experience with my school and I know it differs with every school in the Uk but i think that covers a lot of the broad stuff and puts the concepts of forms and houses across.

Houses at school here in Australia were so broken. Every school i went to (moved alot) had 2-3 big houses of 50-100 kids and then the one extra house of less than 20, and as a new kid (who didnt fit in at all/bullied alot) was put into the 20. I was athletic, did competitive jump rope (performed), held sprinting records, and a few other random things. The houses had who could chant their chant the loudest, so ofc 20 people vs bigger houses never won. And the school claimed all scores were divided by amount of people... But the small house never won, any year. It was just for the misfits, even if athletic. Was kinda sad tbh.

KZbin isn't practical. It makes complete sense that a teacher would tell a student to stop that, especially if it's getting in the way of school. Teachers are there to teach. They are not there to guide students toward what they want to do. A lot of things that young students want to do are unrealistic and take more work than they think. There's nothing wrong with that. Saying "You can do whatever you want if you set your mind to it," is literally lying to someone. It's complete nonsense. A delusion.

As an American these ideas of schooling are so foreign to me. We have up to grade 12 and then college after. No houses. 3 different levels of schooling. Elementary, middle, and high school. And then you get a whole school every now and then for just the kids with special needs. And everything for the Elementary middle and high schools are all in the same buildings. And it's all coed and very rarely do we wear uniforms. It's more commonly just a dress code. So like you can't wear see through clothing or anything provocative. Or some schools don't allow hanging chains for like wallets and stuff. And for grades like 6-12 you get like a 5-10 minute grace period in between classes to get to the next class on time because sometimes the hallways look like a bar on super bowl Sunday or fifa. Absolutely packed.
