After years of making videos about Somaliland, I finally visited in person for the 18th May national holiday celebrations!
Many thanks to the Somaliland Mission to the UK and the Somaliland Foreign Ministry for making this video possible. Please note: no one other than me had any editorial control over the contents of this video.

That is right, 18 May is not the official Somaliland independence day but it is the reclamation of the 26 June 1960 independence from the Britain and the withdrawal of the failed union with Somalia after 31 years. From 1960-1991. Excellent program thought. Thank you!

Greetings from Seattle A.K.A Sea town. As a fellow American and Somaliland born I want to talk you for your open mind and support for Somaliland.❤🎉 I wish our foreign policy would be more productive in dealing with like minded people around the world and reword those who are doing right by their people. As a survivor of the Isaaq genocide in the late 80’s, just the age 10 I still feel it could easily happen again in the world continues to support and arm the same very people that committed the massacre.

Hello my fellow American! I'm so glad you saw this video! How wonderful that you were able to survive the Isaaq genocide and tell the world about it. From what I've seen of the Somaliland Foreign Ministry and the ambassadors, they are all very hard working and the lack of progress is really a problem of the world community, not SL's foreign policy. But let's hope that recognition starts to be adopted worldwide soon!

Those who where living in Somaliland on 26 June 1960 when Somaliland got it is independence from Greate Britain 🇬🇧 are Somalilanders. Not the immigrants from Somalia Italy 🇮🇹who their country was under the Italian Colony at that time. The Democratic Republic of Somaliland are fighting to defend their democracy their rights, equality and justices as a nation. Please 🙏 stop joking.

Welcome again Fredo Rockwell to the Republic of Somaliland. You and many of our American, British, European, Ethiopian, Emirati, Kuwaiti Taiwanese and Asian friends who fought with us along the golden struggle for political recognition, defended our legitimate cause and overcame many unfavourable winds blowing from all sides until we reached the shore of salama and thanksgiving and the promise soon in weeks or months the great celebration of Somalilands political recognition which we struggled for patiently, resiliently and adamamantly for 33 years. We thank you Fredo Rockwell and all our International friends who always believed in and defended our just cause. Somaliland will be your second home and you'll be welcome as honorable, exceptional guests whenever you come. When the rivers of oil flow soon in this blessed country, the many friends in our armed struggle and the struggle for recognition will be the first to enjoy with us this bounty and prosperity, In shaa Allah.

Lack of foreign aid has probably benefited Somaliland. It has built resilience in the people, and look at what they’ve built from just rubble. Well done.
@FredoRockwell
@FredoRockwell 2 күн бұрын
Foreign aid certainly can create problems, that's for sure, and so I think you're right that Somaliland has benefitted from having to cultivate the self-reliance to rebuilt itself. There are moments when I'm sure that Somaliland would appreciate better access to aid, though, and I can't blame them. One was after a huge fire in the market area of Hargeisa a couple years ago. It took out one of the most important parts of the national economy and bankrupted a lot of private citizens overnight. I know that the Somaliland government would have apprecited access to short-term help, and they did get a small amount in the end I think, but most of the work had to be done using their own resources. The other issue is elections - genuine one-person-one-vote elections are expensive to run, and there are international groups that help fund them in many countries. Somaliland is so committed to the democratic process that they hold them anyway, but I'm sure they would appreciate more international help when they happen!

First of all, we welcome you to Somaliland, and we are happy that you are the most people who understand that there are two states, namely Somaliland and Somalia. Somaliland has done everything a country needs without recognition, it is a country that has succeeded in making passports and money for their country, whether it is the army, government employees, money spent on domestic projects and everything the government needs. Its citizens collect the money that the government pays for those expenses. Remember that they have not received international aid for 34 years. Finally, we welcome anyone who wants to show the world what Somaliland is

It's hard to believe that an unrecognized state is more stable than the recognized state from which it separated. P.s.- Uh, it's a pity that Rhodesia failed to survive at least as an unrecognized state. 🇳🇬⛏️🌳👑😔
@FredoRockwell
@FredoRockwell 22 күн бұрын
I would argue that Somaliland didn't really separate from Somalia. Somalia's previous government (the Somali Democratic Republic) collapsed in 1991, and there was no real government for Somaliland to separate from when it reasserted its independence. The currently recognized government, the Federal Republic of Somaila was only established in 2008 or so. As for Rhodesia, I'm not an expert but from what I know I can't agree that its survival would have been a good thing (even taking into account the many problems Zimbabwe has had since 1980).
@LazurIs.
@LazurIs. 22 күн бұрын
@@FredoRockwell I think we can call it secession anyway, given that Somoliland wants to gain independence. I would like to know. Why do you think that the existence of Rhodesia would be a worse option than the creation of "Zimbabwe"?
@FredoRockwell
@FredoRockwell 22 күн бұрын
Somaliland is independent, there's no doubt about that. What's at issue is recognition. Zimbabwe's history, both before and after 1980, is an extremely troubled one. I'm confident there are people who are much worse off since then, but that doesn't mean that Rhodesia's UDI was a good idea, or that most Zimbabweans today would want to turn back the clock and continue with Rhodesia as it was.
@LazurIs.
@LazurIs. 22 күн бұрын
@@FredoRockwell I think we see an excellent cause-and-effect relationship in this. Pro-communist forces seized power in Rhodesia and turned it into ruins, and due to the fact that a huge number of the most qualified and intelligent population, among whom there were the largest number of people supporting Rhodesia, were forced to flee, few of today's Zimbabweans miss Rhodesia and therefore today's Zimbabwe has so many problems.
@FredoRockwell
@FredoRockwell 22 күн бұрын
@LazurIs. We're getting way off the topic of this video, but however bad the Zimbabwe government under ZANU-PF has been (and I would say it has been terrible) that doesn't mean that the Rhodesian regime was good or should have continued until today. And I would also say most governments throughout most of history have been pretty horrible to the people they rule.

Somaliland is far from perfect but the fact it has state institutions and press freedom is better their than the internationally recognised Somalia is mind blowing you know
@FredoRockwell
@FredoRockwell 4 күн бұрын
I think that's a good summary. Press freedom isn't perfect, from what I understand. There have been instances of journalists being jailed, but I learned about this from a Somaliland-based NGO that monitors press freedom. Just the fact that this institution exists is fantastic. The jailed journalist, as I understand it, was accused of trying to undermine Somaliland as a state rather than just criticizing a politician or a party. But I don't remember the details at the moment.
