I was an 8-9 yr old kid living abt 20 mins down the road from where this happened at the time in Mayfield, Ky and remember this so vividly. I never knew the back story of his mental illness and the cause etc. Given the time period mental issues were not talked abt widely and ppl were just referring to him as the crazy guy who did something stupid. So very sad, but glad to see a name and story behind all this, thanks Lamont!

It's so sad that most of these patients don't want to admit that they have a disorder and that they need to keep up with their medication in order to keep stable. That's why a lot of times they even lose their lives in confrontations with others, even the police that a lot of times don't have enough experience to handle these cases. May God protect our mentally ill patients from the harm they put themselves into when experiencing these episodes, 😪

I was in Paducah that day at BINGO. My neighbor and I took the airport road to go home and passed the ground crew walking in a search formation, arms length apart. They "waved" and we honked. We passed a section of downed fence and I said that maybe a plane nicked the fence. Halfway home it came on the radio about a reported person falling from a plane at Barkley Airport and commented that we may have passed where the person fell. My niece worked at Lourdes Hospital and they set up a viewing area that allowed locals to look at him; just his face was uncovered. There were lines of people. It was said that the tips of his fingers were missing from the flaps closing on them, which was why he let go. He was above tree height when he fell. The police drained a pond in Noble Park because it was said he had been there and threw something in. Not true. The Air Force bomber jacket had a name in it that wasn't his; the rumor was they thought he may have purchased it somewhere. His face was actually in the local newspaper. My late sister had one. The people of Paducah moved heaven and earth to find out his ID. I watched that "Unsolved Mysteries" episode. Next time you're there, Lamont, look up Henry "Speedy" Atkins.

I use to work for the city in Paducah Ky and would clean the small Oak Grove Cemetery office. The elderly lady that worked in the office at the time would tell me stories about the flood(check out Paducah flood wall murals in downtown Paducah)and how caskets rose to the top of ground and started floating down the downtown Main Street at the old cemetery site. The city later moved the cemetery to where it is today and the old dates on stones were some of the originals from the first cemetery site. Paducah has a lot of history. Vice President Barkley is from Paducah!
