Thank you so much for this information! How do you recommend using ascorbic acid powder? Is it best to just mix it with the Ordinary resveratrol ferulic acid serum or can I mix with products with any antioxidants (such as arbutin or Q10)? Will it still be effective when mixed with a basic moisturizer (with few actives, low to no peptides and high in fatty acids) or do I need to test the pH to ensure it's at or below 3.5 pH? Should I just avoid it altogether since controlling percentage will be difficult? :)

So informative!! Thank you so much for this video. I am using .01% Tretinion at night but REP at timeless told me to use vitamin C with hyaluronic acid not the one you are recommended here. This is what she said “In response to your question, if you are using the HA Serum Vitamin C, it is more agreeable to using with another active ingredient as the PH is 7.4. Our other Vitamin CEF has a lower PH @ 2.4 to which I would not recommend using with another active ingredient or prescription cream.” I am researching about ph levels, so confused about using products with certain ph levels to incorporate in our skin. I wish I could go to a dermatologist who will answer these questions for me. But my dermatologist doesn’t seem to know about all the products.

I apply my diy ascorbic acid solution every day. Here is the recipe that I use: Put 2 tsp cosmetic grade ascorbic acid in a 2 oz dropper bottle, and dissolve with warm water. Store in fridge between applications to keep the solution from oxidizing before you use it up. If it discolors that means that is is losing potentcy. Mine never discolors. I adjust the ph to roughly 2.5 using a pinch of baking soda, ph test strips, and a set of tiny measuring spoons. These are spoons for measuring out a tad, dash, smidgen, pinch, and drop. All supplies can be ordered from Amazon, including small funnels so you don't make a mess. This is a strong, highly acidic solution, so newcomers to vitamin c may want to use less ascorbic acid, or slightly more baking soda. Don't let the ph get above 3.5. It has to be acidic to absorb into your skin. My husband told me I have "glowey" skin, although I also exfoliate, microneedle, and use Differin for acne and anti aging effects. I had to give up my precious glycolic acid because all these actives were just too much for my skin. I love using my ascorbic acid solution because it is cheap to make and effective.

In the study linked below, it says Vitamin C is the most plentiful antioxidant available in human skin. Our body uses it to protect our skin from cell damaging reactive oxygen species that generates upon exposing our skin to UV light. This ultimately leads to the naturally occurring Vitamin C in our skin to oxidize and become non-reactive which is why we turn to topical solutions. According to the study, Vitamin C is available on the market as creams, serums, and transdermal patches. Of these three solutions, only serums contain active Vitamin C in COLORLESS form which is unstable and oxidizes upon exposure to UV light causing it to be non-reactive which is what we don’t want. Thus, it doesn’t make sense to wear a serum with colorless active Vitamin C in the sun. Finally, the article states verbatim that “a persistent reservoir of Vitamin C is important for adequate photo-protection which can be achieved by regular 8-hour applications. As UV light lowers tissue Vit. C levels, topical Vit. C is best used after exposure to UV light and not prior”. With that said, is the Vitamin C that The Ordinary uses the “colorless” for that oxidizes upon exposure to UV light? If not, then it seems it can still be applied at any time of the day, but it’s best to apply after UV exposure (i.e. at night) like how the study and Dr. V suggests. Sorry for the long post. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3673383/

Hi Dr. V! I just started taking Vitamin C (Petunia Skincare Vitamin C serum) for the first time and I'm flushing a red when I put it on my face. The vitamin C is at 20%. Am I reacting to it because it's a higher concentration of vitamin c or do you think it might be the other ingredients in the product? I'm so new to learning about skincare so any guidance with be greatly appreciated! Thanks! xx

Hi - just discovered your channel and I love it! I live in Australia and unfortunately can't purchase any of your recommended products (we also can't get The Ordinary 8% Ascorbic Acid plus 2% Alpha Arbutin). So far I've narrowed my options down to the Drunk Elephant C-Firma and Paula's Choice C15 Booster. Wondering if you had an opinion on either, and thought they were suitable for POC? Thanks!

You can use vitamin C with retinol, but be cautious. In the past it was thought that you should avoid using vitamin C products with retinoids at all costs. And that is still sort of true. They work best in different skin environments, so using them at the same time may make both less effective. And because they can have similar effects on the skin, experts do still advise AGAINST using these two ingredients together, Dr. Hogan says. Using them in the same part of your routine can cause irritation, Dr. Lamb says, but it’s okay to use them on the same day at different times. Experts generally advise using vitamin C products in the morning and retinoids at night.
