I like the detail about Ripley’s loss, but showing the first facehugger makes it so the director’s cut doesn’t build the suspense as effectively. When the first thing you hear is that they lost contact with the colony, you fear they encountered the xenomorphs but there’s always this possibility that it’s just an extended transmitter failure. Without that possibility there just isn’t as much suspense.

Correct, Bishop even says that the crash caused too much damage meaning the dropship crashing into the processor started a chain reaction of events it would lead to the explosion. It should also be noted that the Weyland yutani corporation doesn't have a strong history in the movies or books for building the most reliable structures and devices since they're a mega corporation, so I would guess that the failsafe on the processors is very minimal.

I had heard a story that the scene where Newt slides down the chute, the young actress kept flubbing the scene so she could slide down over and over again until James Cameron caught on to what she was doing and told her that if she played the scene right, he'd let here play on the chute as much as she wanted for the rest of the day. So, she did, and he kept his promise.

Quentin Tarantino talked recently about how he attended the premier and waited in a line that went around a block and down the street just to see this and how the audience was a madhouse. It seems so commonplace now and I never really thought about how epic sequels were only becoming a thing for people then. And I am a hundred percent certain this upped the game and we would not have epic sequels as they are now without it. This of course I think contributes to the legacy and hype this film carries with it. All these older generations that remember that experience. Another recent thing is Paul Reiser published a What If? comic about his character Carter Burke for Marvel Comics. I remember thinking about this when I first saw this movie. If you know your plot points you can see all the establishment and emphasis they put into the story about Burke surviving and then at some point he has an anticlimactic mostly off screen death. Apparently this was a last minute change where they just thought of an ending they liked more. Without spoiling this assuming he did survive fills in a lot of plot holes in the next film. Reiser like most actors cared deeply for his character and always wanted more for it and wanted to tell a story about it. Anyway it's a really good read. It deviates very far from the intended story but nonetheless you can see Reiser's passion in it and I think it's cool that he got to make it after all these years. Another good read is sort of a twisted but fun illustrated book called Jonesy: Nine Lives on the Nostromo. This tells the story of the first movie but through the perspective of the cat Jonesy. Worth reading too if you this stuff imo.

From the golden age of good sequels. Hicks was also Reese in Terminator. He did a few more films before eventually taking a break from Hollywood. He would surface every 5 to 10 years or so, but generally erayed out of the spotlight despite these films making him a rock star.

6:27 when Bill Paxton's character asks to do the knife thing. the stunt man who performs the trick put his hand over Bill Paxton's hand to protect Bill's hand and does the trick without Bill knowing it was gonna happen in real life. Bill Paxton's reaction is genuine, because as far as he thought the man was supposed to do the trick to himself and not over Bill's hand. that must've been a scary experience lol.

James Cameron of Terminator and Titanic fame was the director. Alien was made on a budget of 11 million dollars. Aliens on a budget of 18 million. So just about double. 😂 Egg > Facehugger > Chestburster > Drone (Xenomorph) one Xenomorph > Queen > Egg 😮 One of the more common theories is they use echolocation like a bar or pheromones.

8:09 it actually didn’t surprisingly! Cameron was really good about keeping the $18.5 million budget under control from his time working on low budget movies. It made over $130 million so it paid off

The Queen using the elevator was a combo of 2 things going on. One the Xeno is a fast learner, she (queen) saw Reply use it and sused it out. Also, xeno's inherit some memories and knowledge from its host. So the queen would have some understanding on what an elevator doses.

Actually, Hicks only made it through the "glass" (acrylic or polycarbonate plastic, most likely) because Hudson had shot it out first, as Hicks had told him to do. It happens really fast, but watch Hudson fire at the window immediately before Hicks launched himself. If he hadn't done that, then Hicks would have bounced off quite hilariously and painfully. Note also that Burke had removed Ripley's pulse rifle from the bed to outside of the room before he locked her and Newt inside.

I actually met Carrie Henn (NEWT) last year at a sci-fi convention; days before Halloween. Wish I could share a picture. Got her autograph on my Aliens DVD. Aliens was her only movie. I was amazed that Bishop remained useful after ripped in half, unlike a certain gold droid in Empire Strikes Back. The actor who played him didn’t know how to read until he was 30 years old! What you perceived to be his ‘guts’ was actually wires, tubes, and hoses. I was ecstatic when the movie was mentioned in an Avengers film and the basis for a rescue plan! They even did a camera shot that was reminiscent of it. I wish you watched the Special Edition of Aliens. Do NOT bother with the remaining sequels. HUGE disappointments. Normally don’t bother with audio commentaries but I enjoyed the one with the director and cast

Lance Henriksen (Bishop) probably didn't need much makeup, that's just the way he looks, he's very skinny. He also was originally intended to play the Terminator before Arnold grabbed that role, so he became one of the officers at the police station instead. He was also the lead on the TV show Millennium, which had a crossover with the X-Files after cancellation.(both made by Chris Carter)

If you are going to watch Alien 3, I highly recommend you watch the 'Assembly Cut' (sometimes called the Special Edition). Most fans would agree that it's the better version.

Fun Fact: Acton Power Station in west London doubled as the interior of the atmosphere processing station. When they went to film the Tim Burton adaptation of Batman, they found all of the Alien hive set still in place. Al Matthews who played Apone was a real veteran. He was the first black marine in the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of sergeant. He also was awarded the Purple Heart twice; along with 13 other awards. His portrayal of Apone was the inspiration for Sgt. Avery Johnson in the Halo franchise. Also, during takes for the scene where Newt falls down the shaft, Carrie Henn kept messing up her takes in order to slide down multiple times. Also, if you watch carefully, part of the costume for Alien that takes Newt falls off. Please, please, please ignore what people say & make sure you watch the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 to round off the trilogy. Alien 3 is a masterpiece; albeit a flawed one, with some excellent performances (Sigourney Weaver, Charles Dance) & has divided fans since its release due to being so different to the previous two films. It had a very troubled production & was David Fincher’s debut. The Assembly Cut is as close to the directors vision as we’ll ever get; the studio interfered to the point where Fincher disowned the film. It was also the last film legendary cinematographer Jordan Crowneweth (Blade Runner) worked on; he left the project due to suffering with Parkinson’s. Carrie Henn who played Newt is now a teacher & regularly attends Aliens events

One of my favorite movies; I was 15 the years this came out and absolutely loved it. It was awesome seeing Michael Biehn as Corporal Hicks in this after he played Reese in The Terminator. Three of the actors in the movie, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein would reunite for 1987's Near Dark, a vampire movie. Near Dark was the first movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow. Jenette Goldstein also had roles in Terminator 2 and Titanic. This was the only movie Carrie Henn, who played Newt, was in as she became a teacher. The cast and crew also threw a birthday party for her on the set. Sigourney Weaver was amazing in this film and I love the relationship between Ripley and Newt. The score for this film by the late James Horner was amazing. I love the music from this film.

A fusion reactor can't detonate like a thermonuclear bomb; if the cooling fails the reactor itself and fuel will simply vaporize or melt away. But Cameron knew that no one watching the finale knows this, nor would they care. 😅

There is a deleted scene (not in special edition either) when Ripley is searching for Newt, she comes across Burke who has been cocooned and impregnated as he saying to her "Please Ripley, help me. I can feel it inside me." Ripley has enough heart to give him a handgun. As she's walking away, you hear a gunshot off-screen.
