I've subscribed and enjoyed your videos. I passed my class one in 1986 and my HGV experience is patchy at best. I joined the railway in 2000 and kept my vocational driving licence by working casual for a local bus company. I then had an illness in my right eye which caused myself to lose the sight of it. My left eye remains excellent at 6/6 or greater and this is the point of my post. I declared my monocular vision to DVLA who sent me for eyesight evaluation which they paid for and was allowed to keep my vocational licence due to 'grandfather rights'. I'm nearing retirement and would like to keep busy and have considered going back to driving. My problem would be if I'd pass the company medical even if DVLA says I'm fit to drive.

@elizabethmaybrown67152 жыл бұрын
@@stepheneyles2198 it does tend to depend on how busy the road is for traffic as to whether its practical to reverse in off the road or drive in then manoeuvre into place, sadly some drivers are so impatient that they try and drive around the reversing vehicle, putting themselves in danger or just causing a bigger problem than necessary by getting in the way of the vehicle manouvering and blocking access
@stepheneyles21982 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethmaybrown6715 sorry I meant the bit in the yard at 11:20, I thought Haley said it was Coventry...

It was Coventry. That would've been a "blindside reverse" which is very difficult for beginners (as I was then). I also don't think there was enough space on the right where you said to get the trailer straight enough before reversing. I was pretty hopeless at reversing back then anyway, haha

I got to say I can't fault your reverse at all Hayley, the only thing is learning to tell if a gap is too awkward at the start, like after you pointed out the trailer you were picking up when you were passing the blue truck for the first time, I could see that you were going to struggle either with a blind side reverse, or the gap opposite the trailer not allowing any real kind of angle to get the trailer in to the first gap, and the only way you were going to do it was getting really close to the trailer you were picking up. you got all the positioning right, but not enough room to turn the truck 45 degrees to the trailer because of the 2nd building, the only other thing you could try to do, but totally say avoid at all cost! is about 18 shunts back and forward to turn the truck on a dime, but with the truck being an automatic with brake assist, then makes it nearly impossible and chance of damage to the surrounding property and the truck so high that I wouldn't reccomend trying it. as it is a lot of 1 foot movements while turning the truck on a virtual spot, easier to do with a manual truck as you got more control when the clutch is engaged, and disengaged, and not stupid brake assist to hold the truck which then allows for such tight turning circle.
@michaelthomas36462 жыл бұрын
great vlog Hayley

when I say brake assist I mean hill hold feature. it doesn't allow the truck to move as freely to do such tight turns.

Hi Hayley thanks for posting your videos Ive decided im going to give HGV driving a go so im going to do the HGV 2 licence first. I have a question though sorry if it sounds daft but I am new to it all, can I put myself through the training independently or do I have to do the whole training with a HGV driver training company, I rang a national HGV driver training company last week and they have quoted me £2,558 from start to end. I watched your early video of you going through HGV 2 training and your end cost was roughly £1500 a much better option for me at the minute as im currently unemployed.

You can do it independently that way it is cheaper if you go to a Brooker they will charge you 2500 then they will send you to a school they find all of which you can do your sell m class 2 and class 1 cost me 2400 approx , defo ring the schools direct Wallace is good and so is elite truck training

@@Ryboner1 I only know that if your in receipt of UC its an option because a friends son took advantage of it. You should contact your local jobcentre and enquire as to whether ESA entitles you to funding as well. If for some reason it doesn't, be aware that due to the desperate need for drivers. There are a number of company's that are willing to fund your licence, if you agree to a fixed term of employment upon passing your test. This is usually a period of two years in order to make their investment worthwhile. After that you are free to work anywhere.

Haley, I really suggest that your next career move should be to join the railway and explore the possiblilties of becoming a train driver. You would enjoy the challanges of driving a train, possibly at 125mph if you got in with an inter city company. Living in the Birmingham area, you would have the choice of a few passenger or freight companies to apply for. Every man and his dog wants to be a train driver so you would be up against hundreds of applicants, but they are actively trying to attract women into the train driving role so you might have a better chance. You should research the role and the psychometric tests that you need to pass, but I think you would enjoy it. Plus you could still do class 1 driving on days off if you wished. I myself come from the railway. Watch this video. If you get bored after 10 minutes, then train driving isn’t for you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fojQZpurirKrq7M

Fun fact: You know that teachers in elementary education (even English language) in Switzerland earn more than half as much as a truck driver? about £ 6000 per month (converted into francs) ;)
