I work in the cemetery business, but in the ground side of it. Grounds was hectic, working 6 days a week, 8-14 hour shifts at a time, but I met funeral directors through the job and man, that's a real round the clock job. Mad respect. It's a job that isn't for everyone, but if you can handle it, it's sooo rewarding cause it truly is an amazing feeling when you see how you help families with remembering their loved ones, both on the grounds side and funeral director side. To anyone interested in the cemetery business, go for it. Some days are rough, but it's soooo rewarding to be able to help people get closure when they lose someone.

Watching all the videos I can to try to work through some deep fear of death and the dead. I've been a nurse for 20 years and was an aid for 2 years prior to nursing school. I'm great with the dying but once they become a corpse, I literally make a break for it, especially when the funeral home comes. I twice, while working in Connecticut, witnessed two horrible transfers to body bags. I initially got into nursing to save lives, not realizing how passionately I would feel about the geriatric population, so for 20 years, I mostly usher lives on to the next world. My fear goes back to when I was 5 and the Thriller video came out...then, that same year, around Christmas,my best friend died in a house fire. From then on, I just couldn't deal but my 18 year old daughter has decided to become a funeral director. I am trying SO HARD to support her. She's doing it because we've lost so many in our family prematurely and she sees how amazing our regular funeral home has been. She wants to be helpful to grieving families.

that's really interesting because i am the exact opposite. i am wanting to enter the funeral business as a career and could NEVER do medical work. the process of dying freaks me out. corpses and dead things don't really bother me though. i guess for me because the soul is gone, and there's no suffering? i am not sure. just an interesting contrast i noticed between us.

It's so rewarding and such an honor to help people during their most difficult times. My family and friends don't understand what it is that I do or how it can be even though I have tried to explain it to them. I shared this video with all of them so they can understand. I never thought I would be doing this for my career. I never had any desire to work in this field but when I landed my first job in the funeral industry as a part time funeral services attendant, I fell in love with the job and the people. I had to get into funeral arranging so that I could work with families from the moment the first call comes, or the moment they walk through the door all the way through the services and my following up with them afterwards. Thanks again for doing such a great job with this video.

I just retired after a 51 year career as an RN, mostly in trauma critical care. I actually found that the biggest gift God gave me for my calling, is the ability to deal with the patient and family when we can’t save a patient. Someone asked me once how I can deal with losing so many especially young patients. I told them that when I knew that we were not going to be able to save, making what we had was so important to make it the best it could be. I have prayed, cried and sat with so many patients and families. I have been called an angel, a friend, part of the family. I have had such a strong bond with some patients that I knew they had died before I was even told. Please, do whichever ever path you feel is best for you. I think you will be a blessing to whichever path you follow. God bless you.

I found this interesting to see how things really have not changed since I last worked for a Funeral Home, except we did NOT do weekend arrangements due to the fact that no one was around at church's or cemetery's. We seldom had funeral services on weekends because of the overtime that the cemetery charged, and had to be finished by noon.
@LittleMissFuneral6 жыл бұрын
Jim Warnow we have overtime fees at the local cemeteries on Saturdays as well. It doesn’t stop families from having a Saturday service, that day is actually our busiest day for funerals! And we meet with families ALL the time, but I explain to them that I can’t promise arrangements to be 100% confirmed unless I can get ahold of the people I need to contact. Weekends are definitely stressful because I am constantly waiting for people to call me back so I can make my deadlines, but I just try to do what I can!

I really appreciate the aspects of this video where you explain the little 'behind the scene' details that the public and families don't see a director work on. I'm a student and an FDA and as much as I advocate for the benefits of taking a more hands-on role in the death of a loved on and consider new options (home funerals, green burials, celebrations of life, etc), the role of a funeral director is a necessity no matter what the funeral looks like or entails. Even if you don't want a loved one to be embalmed, or would prefer a direct cremation, or no services/events at a funeral home, a funeral director is a professional and expert who knows exactly what needs to get done and what options are available to you, so regardless of your experiences with planning funerals or how able you are to function in the event of someone you love dying, you at least have some direction or scaffolding to work with.

I happened to stumble upon this channel to see how things have changed. Other than the fact things are done online, not much has. I graduated mortuary science college 40 years ago and was lucky to find a job at a family owned mortuary where there would be an average of 100 services/month. I knew a classmate who was an employee who worked nights there, so I would study with him and volunteering my time there while learning as much as possible. After a few months I was eventually offered a job to work there since it was apparent I was serious about being in the mortuary business. I wasn't looking for a job at the time because classes were extremely intense with 19 units/semester. I needed the income, so I took it part-time (but seemed like full-time w/part-time pay). I did everything from 1st calls (removals) nights, hand washing/waxing cars in the AM's, sweeping parking lots to driving limos and directing funerals, typing and filing death certificates in PM's to embalming cases and counseling families towards the end of each day & much more. I went to work daily well scrubbed and went home 14 hours later looking like I had been in a fight. I couldn't wear the same suit twice between cleanings although I wore coveralls to keep from getting dirty. Although I was salaried I feared I could lose my job at any time depending on how my boss felt, and there were many terminations. I became married to my job with little/no time off and no social life. I wore a lot of hats. I found a much better job with benefits after 4 years of intensive training. Everything looks pretty until you get behind the curtain. It was non-stop fast paced action. I proved my value by not placing limitations on what I could do then. Imagine being on-call nights without a cell phone, answering machine, or a pager!

Great video Lauren. I know funeral directors are VERY busy when someone dies, my question is how many days a week (on average) is your funeral home not handling a death? If you folks dealt with 2-3 deaths a week then you would be straight out, but are there weeks with no customers when it's not so crazy, and how often does that happen? I live in MA, I see your old college, Mount Ida is closing. Lots of contraversy around that decision.

I know these questions sound stupid but I’m very set on enrolling in a Mortuary Science program to get my AAS and become a funeral director. Do you find time to eat healthy food? Also how do you write a obituary? Is it a mini thesis statement?
@bryansproles28796 жыл бұрын
I don't really have the stomach to be able to handle that kind of work, but all the different things that you have to do is very interesting :) One question I have is - why are people calling at all hours of the night to set up these meetings? I guess it has to do with body preservation, but they wouldn't expect to come see you at the funeral home at those hours, so why would they expect they can call 24/7?
@LittleMissFuneral6 жыл бұрын
Bryan Sproles as funeral directors, we get notified when a person dies. And people die all the time, even in the middle of the night! When we are notified, if not by the next of kin, I call them right away to get verbal permission to take their loved one into the care of the funeral home and verbal permission to embalm (if those are their wishes). Then, we set up a time for the next day to meet to set the actual arrangements. So even though we are notified at all hours of the night, and have to go out to pick up the deceased, we are not physically meeting the family until more responsible hours.
@bryansproles28796 жыл бұрын
Wow...that takes a real passion for this kind of work, which you and Kari have both shown in the videos you've made :) I guess the only weird thing about it would be - whoever's calling in the early hours has probably been awake for awhile, and you (or whoever the funeral director is) is still groggy and sleepy while trying to speak to this person...
