Your mom is so lovely!! One thing I would recommend to young women going through divorce is to avoid the urge to be too considerate of your soon-to-be ex. This is a huge mistake I made. I am a kind and fair person and assumed we would look out for eachother during this process, but he was not interested in protecting me in the same ways and I lived to regret it. If there is something that you are legally entitled to, TAKE IT. This is not the time to be "fair". I know it probably goes against every fiber of your being, but it's fair to take what you are legally entitled to and it's likely that your ex wont hesitate to do so. Sending everyone love!

One thing I’ve learned is to never get rid of the life insurance policy because sometimes it’s impossible to get another one and if you are able to, the monthly charge is a lot more expensive because of age and health differences. Especially because life insurance is in place to help your family when you are not around anymore. Mourning is hard and even more difficult when finance troubles creep in.

I lost all my finances getting divorced. I was married to an abusive narcissistic partner who drained me financially and I had no where to go. I literally had to leave the country and my family paid for my plane ticket and quarantine and I'm starting over again. So blessed to have family to fall back on. But losing the last 15 years of working essentially has been brutal.

Totally agree, massage is so helpful when your body is stressing, and even though it isn't the same as the touch of a loved one, the simple act of being touched during a massage is very healing too I think.

Lovely Michel ~ I just love that you and your sister are helping your mom update her wardrobe! As some people get older, they do get stuck in a past decade with their hair and clothes without knowing how invigorating it is to update occasionally. They don't have to compromise their style either and often times they are introduced to different brands that compliment them seamlessly. I can truly see why you are such a wonderful person, your parents are thoughtful, supportive and loving. Your little dude Max is looking sooo handsome after a fluff, trim and he PEED too! Recently during a major snowstorm somewhere, people were "stuck" overnight in an IKEA - that would be my DREAM and I'd get to shop at my leisure, spend the night in one of the "apartments." Happiness! So happy you are starting up the very real and necessary conversation about finances, esp if you're single income like me and you, thank you. I’m sorry it as when you had to tell what was going on in your life. I totally understand the divorce part it was so overwhelming for me with 2 children. That was 30 years ago however, it was so stressful but the thing that helped me was my Faith. Financially it was difficult, thank goodness my ex and I stayed friends (forgiveness) played a huge part in the transition. But he helped of course nip and beyond the designated child support. To anyone contemplating cancelling life insurance bc you are child free and divorcing PLEASE if it can fit into your budget DO NOT CANCEL. You never know what the future holds. You could eventually have someone youd want the money to go to and if you cancel, youll never get the same policy for as cheap as you have it now! Also, if you develop health conditions, you could become ineligible if you cancel.

Biggest money mistake women make is with tragedy. I was widowed suddenly. We planned financially for emergency. My education is law, so I knew. I was also married so I have legal rights. Saddest cases are those who have kids and live together, unmarried, claiming 'it's basically the same as being married." No it isn't. Not at all. "Common law" is a thing of the past and not recognized in most states now. With taking the legal responsibility of marriage, we get the legal rights of marriage. Even with kids, girlfriend/boyfriend is no more a relative than than any of his/her other friends or neighbors. They have no rights, and so many I have seen learned the hardest way at the most devastating time in their lives. So many today are doing this, getting blindsided because they just didn't know better and none of us expect tragedy will hit us. Only marriage gives complete rights of a spouse/next of kin, but if wanting to have families unmarried, couples at least need to have wills, living wills, and all the legal precautions set up with an attorney if one is injured, ill or passes.
