I know what you mean...I think now that we are older we realize that life is short and we want to be the best person we can be, and also we want to be content and not anxious. I know for me it sounds corny but I just find joy in the simple things, a beautiful plant I see, etc., more than I used to. You don't want to take anything for granted any more. :)
@JLJBackToClassic6 жыл бұрын
Yes, oh my gosh, yes, L McCauley. The simple things mean so much more to now, don't they? Because... we can feel the years whipping by so quickly. I don't think you sound corny at all. I think you sound very wise and at peace. My goal in life is the kind of contentment you speak about, so I understand what you're saying. ~ Janis

It’s 2023 - do you still go by “never complain, never explain” ? It was great info.
@JLJBackToClassic Жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh, you have ESP, Phyllis! I told my girlfriend, CSG, just last week at lunch, after complaining about my headache from allergies to something outside, "I promise, I'm not going to complain or explain anymore!" I could hear myself whining to her, and I was so aggravated with my whining, that I remembered that saying--and how much I needed to repeat it to myself. Thank you for reminding me yet again. You made me smile! 🙂

We say that in the UK all the time. The 'explain'? It's about not justifying ourselves or excusing our actions. Own them and yes, move on... You explained beautifully! It's part of why people think we're reserved, though! 'No' needs delivering in a kind way! You are a moment of calm in the week, thank you. xx

Dear Janis while I was watching and listening to your statement - I thougt that you are my soul sister in many ways. I am 57 and I sometimes see the glass half empty like you do and my husband like yours sees it the other way around. Changing my attitude thats what I try almost every day.... For example I am living in the country side so I have to commute every day by train to go to work . During rushhours the trains are packed with all kind of people and not everyone is decent , neat and kind... and sometimes there are "malodor"... so I just stand still and keep my mouth shut.... and think of something positiv.... I always wanted to be a wise, friendly , kind and contened woman who ages with grace and stop complaing about things we cannot change. Instead using my energy for other things - thats one of my goals. I like your personality, your taste and style and enyoy your blog and your videos very very much! Please excuse my English ... 😊💝Best regards from 🇨🇭 Sandra
@JLJBackToClassic6 жыл бұрын
Sandra, your English is beautiful! You're from Switzerland, yet you speak and even write in my language, and I can't speak, let alone write in yours. I am in awe of this. When I hear your description of your train ride...I truly admire your ability to switch your mind to something positive, so the odor doesn't cause you so much or as much distress. The fact that you have taken the time to be so introspective and work on yourself to be positive in such a challenging situation is very admirable and inspirational for all of us. I love your description of what you want for yourself: "I always wanted to be a wise, friendly , kind and contented woman who ages with grace." What a beautiful goal for life. What a joyful way to be. Great advice for me, too. Thank you! Best regards to you, too! ~ Janis

I can relate completely to this video! Strangely enough, I have watched the same interview with Kate Moss a few days ago and I remember vividly this quote: "never explain, never complain". It is indeed an awesome thing to do. I am 57 now and I have been raised by an emotionally unavailable, severely narcissistic mother. I was "trained" and programmed to be a people pleaser and I felt like it was my "duty" to explain every decision and every action I took over the years. When I turned 50, a big shift in my consciousness took place. I realized that I have struggled all my life to get out of the mentality that the glass is always half empty. This negative way of thinking was all I knew. It took me 7 years to change everything and thanks to the magic of reading and the internet I am now a happy, optimistic person. Congratulations on your beautiful birthday resolution and I wish you all the best and good luck! Big hug from Transilvania

Great video. After many years as a trauma nurse and seeing the absolute tragedies of life I can say it is all good. My commuting reply ..plane train or automobile. If they are not asking me to go by wagon train.it is all good. When someone around me gets so anxious over small stuff I laughingly say, is everybody breathing? Is everybody’s heart beating? Then we can handle this🙂 the other thing I do is I have intentionally with planning and forethought slowed down for heavens sake. You cannot stay in the fast lane and be positive. God has given me a life after cancer and complications. I am not going to waste it complaining. By the way the glass is ALWAYS full..half oxygen and half water 🙂

Gratitude journals are a great way of turning you from a glass half-empty person to be more positive. It's what turned my attitude around about 5 years ago and I haven't looked back! Unfortunately, I haven't been well enough to leave my home for some time now, and it has changed my perspective on many things, for example, I regard it as a real privilege to be able to walk out my own front gate. A visit to a friend's house would be an absolute luxury. I'm hugely grateful for an hour I'm not aching. Complaining is not an option. Thereby lies the road to self-pity, and perdition. Also, no explanations. I used to feel I had to explain myself constantly. Not any more. Medical matters are private, and too boring to inflict on anyone. So, no explanations, just a pleasant yes, or no. Friends will accept your decision, and all others will just have to live with it. Great video. Thank you, and good luck with your changes.

Asking for help is huge for me too! It is usually the last thing I do, but at the same time, I'm asked to help ALL THE TIME! What is wrong w us?!?🤔🤔🤔 It was my grandmother, who always said; Don't depend on others, don't ask for anything, etc.... But life sure is easier, when you dare to ask your friends to help you out! Enjoyed your video. If I could ask where to have a dead car battery, I would prefer a nice shopping center parking lot also!☺️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I can definitely relate to your desire to become less negative, as I have felt exactly that desire in my own life -- I think that some of us are "melancholy" types from birth, but it doesn't mean we can't be more aware of that, and try our best to combat it. I find meditation helpful, and calming self-talk, but my negative thoughts are a tendency that I must actively combat with continual awareness. It isn't easy.

S. Bingham, thank you for your candid introspection. You offer two wonderful ways to help quiet the mind when it goes negative: meditation and calming self talk. I love the description "calming self talk". Although I didn't really think about it until now, that's probably how you would describe what I did while I sat on the steps, waiting for the tow truck. Hopefully I wasn't talking out loud? Goodness, who knows! Maybe people will think I'm crazy, but at least I'll be a calmer crazy person! ~ Janis

Happy Belated Birthday! My husband and I are like you and your husband, except reversed, my glass is half full. Traffic is his biggest issue (we live in the Chicago area so you can imagine!) too! What made you decide to change your outlook? Any ideas on how to "fill up his glass" would be helpful.

That’s a great question, HoneyB563…I’m not really sure, except to say that I’m just sort of fed up with that negative nelly inside of me. I can’t stand listening to her whine and complain anymore. I want to be at peace, content, and joyful from a deep place that isn’t affected by exterior things, but I’m so far from being that person right now.. In particular, I want to be that for my husband, and especially during challenging times, because he is those things for me. He’s always been my cheerleader. My positive place to turn to, and I can feel the years going by so quickly and that is… frightening to me. I want to make the time we’ have together good and sweet. I think the best thing you can do to “fill up the glass” for your husband is to continue to be yourself and serve as an example. That’s what did it for me. Seeing how my husband and others react to challenging times in such a positive manner. I think our best teachers teach by example.! You are his teacher. When the student is ready, he will pay attention. Thank you for your birthday wishes! ~ Janis

I love this vlog post! I’ve also made a resolution of no complaining and I’m adding no explaining as well. We have so much to be grateful for and so little that requires complaining about. I’d be very interested in hearing about the diet you follow. I’ve recently developed some health issues that I think are diet related...hair loss being one. I’d love a vlog post on it but no explanation necessary if you don’t want to ;)

I’ve really loved this video. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Moving forward I would like to do the same. I often find myself complaining about things which are usually insignificant and I always end up regretting it. Life’s too short to be so negative all the time. I’m also one who feels the need to give lengthy explanations as to why I can’t do something, which I also often regret doing. My husband told me that last time he saw his grandfather (in hospital, just before he died) he was told by his grandad that when you’re older you will look back to your life and think about times when everything felt too much and you’ll realise that it wasn’t that bad after all. Things, like you said, will mostly pass. My house is currently in a total state of chaos, we’re having building work done and it’s all a big mess. However, instead of moaning about it like I’ve done in the past I’m trying to enjoy every moment, including the chaos and mess. This will pass and I’m grateful to have a roof over my head and enough money to make improvements to it.

Timber Hawkeye of Buddhist Bootcamp says of traffic: Don't complain about traffic because you are traffic. I try to think about that when I am sitting at 0 MPH on a highway. I am contributing to the traffic.

In each day, try your very best to think of someone else besides your self, not saying you dont already. Your happiness is made by you, seek the positive and give God the very best you can ❤

I always considered myself a nice person, but realized I was saying negative things sometimes not realizing how that came off to others. I've become more self aware of my words and actions, but the thing that helps me the most is when I think of others going through things just like I do and that I should give them the benefit of doubt, that they are a nice person too and maybe going through something when they say or act in a negative way. I don't react anymore to other peoples anger the way I used to...I stay calm and keep positive and people usually apologize to me after they have overreacted or we end up in a conversation and you see the other person quickly coming down from their anger...it's amazing! Sometimes I feel like I help the other person realize you shouldn't sweat the small stuff...at least I hope so. tfs

It is always a pleasure to watch your videos but today you make me feel like a was not along in the world, I have been working on the “not complain” for a long time and no, I am not a the whiny type but at this age (57) I like things the way a like them and when there not done or they don’t happened as I think the should’ve I complain but then, like you I think about what I put out there, what people see or feel about me , it is been hard to try to change my ways, however through this journal I have come to discover something interesting, I get so critical and upset some times because I demand first so much from myself, my life, my things, my work, my home have to have an orden, other ways I will go nuts, I have being like this since I can remember so what I ve being doing is to teach myself to relax a little bit with regards to my on things so this had helped me to take outside, out of control things with an ease.... still don’t make it every day but it is small steps exercise. Have no problem with the “not explain “ always be polite but firm , when people see determination on your answers the don’t go on. Kisses from Spain
