This is so funny, I just re-read the Hunger Games last week. The biggest thing I forgot before I re-read it was how great of a character Peeta is? Don't get me wrong, Josh Hutcherson is a great Peeta, but in the book he's so much more sarcastic and clever and witty. In the movie he comes off as more of an injured puppy, but in the book he's actually doing much more strategy than Katniss and he shows more rebellion against the capitol than Katniss does. It was funny how much I forgot about him because of the movies.

I just reread the Hunger Games too for the first time in 10 years and I thought I’d have mixed feelings but I appreciate it even more now. So much of the commentary on the disparity between the capital and the districts was just lost on me when I was in middle school. And I didn’t even notice the amount of times that starvation is noted as the main cause of death in many of the districts yet it’s called the hunger games. Ugh Collins is just such a genius and everything was just so intentional. I think the reason why this book is so successful is that there was a point to her writing it. She had a political message in mind and she hit. The. Mark. wow. I’m just in awe now as an adult how subtly she weaves these themes in

the hunger games is one of those, like, media sensations of the past two decades that has actually, genuinely held up. i reread the series last year for the first time in, like, seven years, and all the political stuff that went way over my head as a kid just hit me. im so excited for the prequel i have faith that it's gonna be handled really well

As a diehard Hunger Games fan, I'm so happy to see everyone collectively rereading the books these days ! They're so good even after all these years, they definitely stand the test of time. I reread it for the 5th time after 4 years and it was a RIDE, I finished Mockingjay like 3 days ago and it's been staying with me ever since. The power of that story, how hardbreaking it is and how cleverly woven everything is. Suzanne Collins is a genius. Also I never noticed the Avox thing are you kidding me

A little detail I noticed while rereading it for the first time too last week, is that when Katniss properly sees & talks about Rue in the training centre for the first time she is practicing with spears. 😭 So much forshadowing there. I also totally didn't expect for this book to hit so hard even though i knew what was going to happen.

I reread the series last week and I was just like you. I remembered that it was good, but I really thought that it would be just because I was younger but then I was surprised by how good these books are!!! And they never get old, that's so cool. The themes are actual and the characters are so well developed, it's REALLY good. And I remembered that I loved Catching Fire the most and hated Mockingjay, but after this second read I realized that I love all three the same way. They're REALLY good omg I read all three in 3 days lmao I feel like a teenager again I really liked Peeta when I read it for the first time, and now I LOVE him!!!! He is so kind and pure, he is so caring and sweet, he is really adorable 😭😭

@@_alexfoster it really isn't, it was a while since I read the hunger games, but I DEFINITELY know they left out a bunch of scenes with prim in district 13, as well as a lot of wimsy things about the Capitol. I reread the trilogy last year and it was something else!!! I loved it even more, cause the first time I read it I was 13 and younger than kitniss so my vision of the world was different, but when I read the second time at 23, I felt it even more, like the book was full of children, Katniss was just a kid as well and they didn't have the access to the world as we did so it hits even harder when you think about it as an adult. They were too innocent. She and Peeta worked so, so well together, they were too clever and I fell in love with them again, but this time I just wanted to hug them, I was so sad for her and at 13 I thought the ending was a bit off it wasn't a "cool" end, but now I see how well deserved that end was, sad in some parts but the happiest it could be. I absolutely love the hunger games and the saga has such a special place in my heart.

I thought the EXACT same thing as you did: that I just loved it so much back then because I was young or because of the hype-but NO! It was so much better this time around since I am now older and a lot of the deeper themes and meaning went completely over my head as a young teen. I think this is my fave trilogy of all time!

When I read The Hunger Games for the first time (also at 14), I distinctly remember finishing the book and immediately going back to the beginning and rereading. And I did that several times, first just with the first book, but when I found out there were more books, I reread the first AGAIN and then continued on to the other books. Probably around a year after I finished the series the first time I finally got physical copies of them and reread them AGAIN. Honestly, at this point I don't know how many times I've read specifically the first book but also the series as a whole actually. Although, I haven't picked them up since the Mockingjay movies 🤷🏻‍♀️

I just reread the entire series and I was blown away! I too kind of disregarded my love for it because I read it in middle school, but I honestly liked it better now in my twenties than I did then. I am shocked by how much I misunderstood in Mockingjay because all I wanted then was the romance and didn't care about the revolution, but now I can understand the complex feelings of Katniss and why Suzanne decided the end it with that book. I really thought I was going to ruin my memory of the books by rereading them, but honestly it made me appreciate and love them even more. Also I loved Catching Fire then, but damn Suzanne Collins weaved that story REMARKABLY. Everyone reading the hunger games and loving it rn is making it feel like 2012 all over again and I am here for it.

I am loving all the people (including myself) that are rereading so many old favourite series, especially ones that brought so many of us into reading! The hunger games is especially important to us and I have been planning on rereading it soon! It has been so long since I read it the first time, and I love all the things that you noticed this second time around. I totally relate to realizing that so many of our favourite books were SO dramatic reading them the second time, especially with how young the characters are and how your opinion of them changes when you read them when you are older, and how many different things Collins included that were lost on so many of us when we were younger ! -Miranda

I had to re-read The Hunger Games for a class, and I was worried I wouldn't like it, or that I wouldn't like analyzing one of my childhood favorites, but I think that made me like it more. But okay in the third book I’ve never seen anyone notice that when Katniss returns home and it’s snowing and her mum is tense (because president snow is inside waiting for her) and Katniss goes to clean her boots so she doesn’t trek snow through the house. Her mother then says “it’s just snow” which I can’t help but always think was her mother trying to warn her who was waiting. Such a tiny thing but there you go

I was also 14 when I read The Hunger Games. At the high school I went to they would give you detentions whenever you were late or skipped too many times and I was always either late or not at school. But I skipped detention for the whole first half of the school year so that I could save them up for winter because I wanted to stay at school until my parents got off of work so I wouldn't have to walk. The only way the school let you stay that long was if you were in detention. So I read the whole entire Hunger Games series ONLY IN DETENTION. That really shows you just how many hours I had detention that winter. When I ran out of detentions I would still go there and the lady who watched it just assumed I was supposed to be there because I was before 😂

I first listened to The Hunger Games as an adult after having seen the films and it completely held up. In Catching Fire I was mostly interested in the small changes between the book and the film, because the films seem to not deviate from the books much and I was craving e a bit more of a surprise element to reel me back. I remember the least about Mockingjay, so we'll see how that goes.

I reread thg for the first time last year and my experience was basically the same as yours! I went in expecting it to not hold up and that I would only enjoy it out of nostalgia but it completely took me by surprise in how brilliant it was. Also in the years since I read it the internet had convinced me Katniss never liked Peeta and that the romance is problematique and like... I shipped them HARD when I was 13, so I kinda went in expecting not to like Peeta or the romace as much this time, but like same as you I found I picked up on the romance so much more this time!! like while Katniss' feelings were obviously slower to develop than Peeta's, I think it's pretty clear she had some interest in him from the beginning. And I still love Peeta Mellark he is best boy. so that was a nice surprise. Man I'm gonna reread again when I'm finished with my uni work

The audiobook is actually so good too, isn't it? I was going for a walk when I got to the part that Rue died and I cried during my walk in the park so that was great lol. It was probably the best decision I've made all year to reread these books. I feel the same as you I feel a lot of the societal critical went way over my head when I read it as a teenager I don't know if I was just so focused on "are they all going to die?" that I just didn't get it but reading it now in my 20s I was like wow it was like reading a new book in some ways. There's a reason why we all read these books and loved them back in the day and it wasn't just because they were the "it thing" to like or whatever they really are just that damn good.

On the topic of no one designing cool outfits for District 12 for the last 70 years of games, I wonder if none of the past stylists really cared enough. I'm sure they thought the tributes from District 12 weren't possibly going to make it through the games so why put in the effort. It's so interesting reading the HG books as an adult vs a teen/ya, there's so much for both age groups to appreciate I think.

I loved the first two-thirds and then it turned into a romance novel and I didn't enjoy it as much. I'm technically the target audience age-wise but I don't like the way it was executed, really dragged out in the end. Also too immature for my taste. I didn't find it extremely amazing, but I still enjoyed it a lot. The themes were very well incorporated and the world-building was great. The characters were all pretty good and Suzanne was great at expressing their personality. Definitely a solid read.

I just got it on Audible. I'm worried about the narrator. Tons of people are saying that she's awesome, but there's some people who hated her. Did you think she was good as Katniss?

I just reread the entire trilogy for the first time in ten years. I had forgotten almost everything, so it was a really enjoyable experience. I was really surprised how the books emotionally impacted me a lot harder than as a teen. Especially Mockingjay had me in a weekend-long depression of crying. The fact that the books are able to offer me something completely different in my late twenties than in my teens, shows how great they are.

Did you re-read the second and third book too? So much more political commentary to notice, now that you are a few years older! Great fun watching your video! :)

Ah yes f*** late-stage capitalism the book. I feel that Do You Hear the People Sing from Les Miserable and Libera Me From Hell from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann are the perfect soundtrack for this series.

I've been wanting to listen to this on audio so I can fit it into my TBR, but I just don't like the narrator's voice. I hate when people that clearly sound older read for teenage protagonists lol Luckily I read this series so much in the past and the new book is a prequel anyway so I'm good

@@thinker5288 I had no idea there were new versions! My library only has the old ones, and I doubt they'd buy the new ones if I request it but I'll give it a shot. Thank you!

I'm also re-reading the series, halfway through catching fire right now. It's such a fun and nostalgic read for me. I read it when it first came out in 2008.. The biggest change for me was how I used to ship Katniss and Gale, but I now realize Katniss is better off alone. She is such a fierce character. I have to disagree on Peeta. I dislike him so much. I've always seen him as quite a colourless character..
