A guide to chain cleaning / lubrication on the Yamaha MT-09 (FZ-09). Followed by asshole drivers cutting corners into oncoming traffic, I've had enough of them.

Never start the engine and leave the motorcycle to lubricate, you can hurt yourself. You only have to turn the wheel with the other hand, nothing difficult.

Thank you for this video. I'm trying to sell my current bike so that I can buy an FZ-09. It will be my first chain-driven bike so I've been trying to do a little research on cleaning and maintenance. Finding a model-specific video like this shows me exactly what I will need to do when I get my own FZ-09. Thanks!

Nothing wrong with cleaning your chain but most chain wear is from over tightening, not dirt. A little more slack than what the factory spec is will allow the chain and sprockets longer life. I've never replaced a chain and sprocket set with anything less than 40k miles.

Quality Video mate. Ive been looking for clear lube for a while as after all that hard work cleaning like I do, I end up lobbing a whole load of nasty yellow foaming lube and the chain looks like crap again!. Ive just ordered the C1 and C2 from easy for £16.80 delivered. How did you get the bike into 1st gear without the gear shift arm in place?

Another great video. Your bike is as clean as if someone would've licked it comparing to mine. It feels like we haven't had a dry day in London since November, and the bike looks awful. Add to that living in a multistory house and lack of a garage and you have the perfect recipe for a dirty bike :) On a sidenote, I would love you to do a video about suspention adjustments for those who don't know anything about it. About adjusting your front forks and rear spring, what rebound and damping is, how turning the bolts on the front forks will affect the feel, etc.

Thanks for the feedback :) I always keep my bikes immaculate. Suspension stuff is on the way in the future when mods arrive, few things coming up first including follow up review in a few days when the bike comes back from its first service!

I agree. Don't use WD-40 to lube the chain. Use it to clean it. Also, it's much easier to clean the chain with a chain brush, which is a metal brush with 3 sides to it. Have someone spin the rear wheel while using it, and while lubing the chain. Much, much easier than a toothbrush, and safer than starting the bike. :)

Hey, I see you have pinched your aluminum block chain adjuster as did I. Now I'm unable to loosen or tighten my rear axle nut all the way because its dented and does not sit flush. Also my license plate holder is a little loose because I can't tighten the rear axle nut all of the way. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance mate!

@jareddougherty8925
@jareddougherty8925 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The 5-15mm recommended is too tight and makes a lot of noise if set that way. I put mine 3/4"-7/8" and it's a lot happier...

Nice video, but: you should definately not spray water on it with high pressure. It kills the sealing of the chain and lowers the durability. For the guys watching: This method is probably the tidest, but you don't have to do it like this. Just clean it with a towel and some alcohol. You don't necessarily have to remove the chain guard to put the lube onto the chain. Put a magazine or newspaper between the chain and the tire and spray the chain lube onto it while spinning the wheel. You can either do it by moving the bike around or spin the back tire while it doesn't have ground contact. I don't really think all that precise cleaning is increasing the durabilty.

I highly recommend clear kerosene for cleaning your chain. It's extremely cheap and O - Ring safe. Its actually what Suzuki recommends. Also check out the lube called Chain Wax, i really like it.

Did you mention you have put 10k miles on the bike already?
@chickenclub6204
@chickenclub6204 9 жыл бұрын
I agree with “b roc”, too tight a chain and too much cleaning are the worst things you can do to a chain. The “O-rings” built into the chain contain the factory installed lubricant that keeps the chain in good working order. When you spray all kinds of cleaners and use high pressure water on the chain you can blowout that lube which will cause the chain to wear prematurely. Paint on some 80wt gear oil and wipe the chain down with a paper shop towel to get the dirt and excess gear oil off the chain. After a total of 20 minutes work you’re now ready to ride for at least 250 miles before you should do it again. I’ve gotten 35k to 40,000 miles out of all my “O-ring” chains.

That's a very clean chain, but it's not a good idea to lube the chain with the engine running and in gear. You rightly warn against cleaning the chain like that, but the same applies to lubing it - things can go horribly wrong very fast.Paraffin (kerosene) is very effective for cleaning chains, is recommended by many motorcycle manufacturers, and is a lot cheaper than spray can chain cleaners.
@93paxon
@93paxon 10 жыл бұрын
So.. How come you lube the chain guide?
@pipboychronicles
@pipboychronicles 10 жыл бұрын
because the chain runs along it and giving it a bit of lube helps spread it to the chain and keeps wear to a minimum. You could leave it dry if you wished.

For the love of god - WHY did you dismantle all that stuff ?!? A brush for the chain cleaning ( 1-2$ on ebay ) - does all the cleaning ( with the chain cleaning spray ) perfectly. Besides - what was all the commotion with cleaning of THAT chain all about ? - It was CLEAN ! Lube the chain properly ( don't save the lube ) every 200-500 km - that's it !
