Holy doggies...we had 1700 bags to ship and we sold all of them in two hours! There are a few other things on sale. The Nerdfighter backpack is $20, so is a crewneck sweatshirt I designed...and there are MYSTERY SOCKS for just $6!!
You can find all of it here: store.dftba.com/collections/v...
The transition to DFTBA profit going to Partners in Health actually (because of how our accounting works) extends back through the entire last year. Profit that isn't going to PIH is either being held as an "operating reserve" (basically 'just in case" money) or distributed to small minority owners who helped us with investment when we needed it.
This might be a tad confusing because DFTBA is a separate company from Complexly (our production company). So the money DFTBA.com makes is profit from providing services to creators (including Complexly.) Complexly (and all of our other creators) will keep making money as normal. So DFTBA's profit is going to PIH, while the money Vlogbrothers makes from selling stuff is still going to Complexly as it's an important part of how we keep the lights on!
Business is fun! If you have any questions, hit those comments!

@@MrZiron94 In case my irony precludes my message from shining through: "philantropy" isn't great because it serves as a way to avoid the will of the general collectivity, and let the richest people decide to whom they will be generous. Now, granted, our political system isn't quite as fair as we could want it to be, but the solution to corruption is not to just ignore it and get around it. People need to start paying fair taxes, and the government needs to start doing its job. If Hank doesn't know what to do with all his profits, it's because they're not taxed enough.

I also appreciate that you are willing to do something more with your name than simply creating more money and more money, as much as I want creators to get paid a living wage and to be comfortably happy, I also don't want to feel like it becomes the only reason to create? Creating to me needs to be a comfortable mix of living, happiness, community, and creation to make good cookies of stuff. I am also rambling now but thank you for all you (and your brother) do. Thank you for the hard work and the compassion you feel for the social responsibilities you have. Look forward to one day having money I can actually spend on things.

Hank is examining this from an entrepreneurial perspective, but as I watched, I couldn't help seeing its creative implications. If any creative people haven't read Elizabeth Gilbert's book, Big Magic, you should. She defines creative ideas as disembodied forms that float through the universe, through time and space, looking for human beings to concretize them into creative projects. When this happens, Gilbert writes, "The simplest answer, of course, is just to say no...You might need to say no to the idea because it is truly not the right moment, or because you're already engaged in a different creative project, or because you're certain that this particular idea has accidentally knocked on the wrong door." I myself have so many ideas, and I want to carve out time to create all of them, but I know it's just not possible. Hank reaffirmed this for me today, and further inspired me by showing me that the vlogbrothers keep creating things--things they really want to--anyway. And they do it with an eye toward making the world suck less. How much richer we all are for it. Thank you

this video makes me so happy! both because you seem genuinely happy and enthusiastic about the things you're saying in it, and because it feels very old-school vlogbrothers/nerdfighteria. i haven't been able to purchase anything from DFTBA for a while due to financial constraints, but i am so proud to be part of a community that acts on its values like this

Still waiting on DFTBA products to be Fairtrade... or at least a statement on why they're not?
@robertofontiglia4148
@robertofontiglia4148 5 жыл бұрын
There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. I know they say their socks are made in the US by people paid decent amounts, etc. etc. Probably they just don't go to the trouble of getting the thing certified properly because it's likely more costs for no good reason.
@KarolaTea
@KarolaTea 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know they're had some t-shirts made in the US too at some point. But most of them last time I checked nope. I know Fairtrade doesn't solve everything, but if it sends a couple more kids to school instead of getting their hands cut off by a spinning machine that should be worth it? Cause I doubt DFTBA are inspecting factories themselves.

Wait... niche pronounced like quiche? Not like witch? Have I been pronouncing niche wrong my entire life?
@robertofontiglia4148
@robertofontiglia4148 5 жыл бұрын
French people would say yes. Because "niche", like "quiche", is from French, and they rhyme in French. But hey -- the french like to butcher English loanwords too, so have at it ! No hard feelings.
@JoneseyBanana
@JoneseyBanana 5 жыл бұрын
Both niche and quiche are French words that got borrowed into English, and in British English we say them both the same way. A lot of Americans pronounce it 'nitch', because the US doesn't have as much influence from the French language so they don't know how it should be pronounced. A bit like "clique", really! (It's 'cleek', not 'click')
@robertofontiglia4148
@robertofontiglia4148 5 жыл бұрын
@@JoneseyBanana In Québec, we speak French, and we pronounce it "click". People pronounce things differently, it's no big deal... And don't you dare tell me we're doing it wrong. The difference between "cleek" and "click" is like the difference between "tomAYto" and "tomAHto" -- no one's right or wrong; it's down to the accents.
@thatjillgirl

Both are accepted pronunciations. I've always tended to be a nitch person myself (especially when referring to little nooks in walls), but the internet seems to like neesh.

This is the Mandela Effect for computers. Which is more real than the Mandela Effect for people... Tom Scott did a great video about why it happens, and it is, basically, because the stats are stored on multiple servers, and they are not consolidated as quick as they are individually updated, which can create the appearance of discrepancies when different databases recieve querries at the same time. It all sorts itself out after the video starts getting lower traffic.

I want to believe you have a plan, thoughtful and rigorously researched and considered. To admit otherwise is to accept that the world is a very complex place that isn't so easy to look upon and that you're just a delightful human being that did well with the decisions you've made. Rock on Hank Green, rock on.
