Richard Vobes goes off briefly to explore the wonderful sites and history of Exeter, in Devon - the old bridge, the quay and the old town. Of course, there are plenty more things to see and learn about. The video was a one man and a camera piece of test footage. I know I didn't do it justice and one day it would be great to return as my TV persona, The Bald Explorer, and do it properly. (I also have to confess, I shot this after an eye operation - and I was on steroids at the time. I subsequently lost my eye all together.)
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the simple look at a delightful city.

Thank You Richard, this is where I have lived 40 yrs. Have walked around it with my Grandsons for Homework. Found out quite a bit. He did get a good mark for His project. Took all day though. So glad to have found this, so much history that I didn’t know.😊 Follow You, so perhaps this is why it came into my feed. 😂❤

I'm a Japanese high school student. I have never been abroad before but I'm going to Exeter as my first time to fly out of Japan from 24th March as a foreign student! I'm really excited and sure that there is a wonderful place. Actually I'm learning British English and addicted to it. Anyway, thank you so much indeed for posting this lovely short video.

Richard Vobes - I understand that the facade will be rebuilt / recreated... When you went to exeter, had they rebuilt Princesshay? That was the first pedestrianised precinct to be built after the war - it was pretty barren, quite pleased to see it gone!

Mister Vobes, I just discovered your channel and I must admit it is very interesting, perfect for an Anglophile like me. In ten minutes it is posible to enjoy a place without tedious explanations like pure dates of battles and events. The images, musics and your expositions of the key elements are fantastic. If you don't mind I want to answer about the titles of the songs in the video. ¿It is possible that the first is from Henry Purcell? Thank you and congratulations for your channel.

@samnjoe97 I agree there are some ugly buildings in Exeter as well as beautiful ones. I am sorry to say that this wasn't meant as view of all of the town, just a quick look at some of the historic buildings. There is plenty to see and learn about and I am most certainly not an expert. Unfortunately I didn't have much time to put a lot into it and I am certain a more thorough documentary is called for. Thanks for watching anyway, even if you didn't liked it very much.

I used to go for day trips to Exeter with my first girlfriend back around 2005, used to go inside the cathedral and old antique shops before hiring bikes down at the quay and cycling along the trail in the beautiful summer countryside. Just two kids messing about, happy and simple times they were. I went to uni there in 2008 and have since lived in Hong Kong and Australia. The winds of change have blown mightily since my time in Exeter. I have some very dear and bitter sweet memories of that very wonderful and sweet place. I'm gonna have to go and pour myself some wine actually, the nostalgia seeing it again is making me choke up!

Nice video. My major concern is the lack of canopy cover in urban areas. If you take a look at Queen street you might as well call it Grey street. No trees or planters - it is a rather boring street with zero nature value. I hope to change this with the support of the ECC team in the future

I'd love to visit Exeter. From videos, it looks like the York of the south (although the south does have a much greater tendency to have terribly bland parts outside of the centre of its cities). But Exeter also appears to have that charming Southern (e.g. Cambridge) feature little seen in the north of a square of grass in front of some townhouses. I live in Stockton on Tees, which is especially handy to visit Durham / Tyneside and North Yorkshire.

I am a big fan of the excellent Richard Vobes, the Bald Explorer. And I live in Exeter, Devon. So, this is a surprise treat. Sadly, as for the city, most of its centre was destroyed by the city council after the War. But, there is still the Cathedral, the Quay, the city walls, Rougemont Castle (in fact, only ever a gatehouse, but massive and dating back to the late 11th century). There was little real damage during WWII bombing raids. It's a myth that Exeter was destroyed in 1942; more damage was caused by the city council's wholesale clearances in the 1950s and 1960s. (e.g., the inner by-pass, the Guildhall shopping centre, etc.). And the House that Moved (16th century) is relatively modern. There are many older houses in Exeter - such as Wynards Almshouses; St Nicholas Priory; the Tudor House; and in the Cathedral Close, etc. And the two Tudor houses right opposite - shown in the video - are older, and more authentic as they were never moved! N.B. I have lived in Exeter for the past 23 years, and earlier since 1984. Still prefer Tunbridge Wells, Kent!
