I really hope you do The Tales of Jenny and Screech (FULL) the full is important, as it's a story song in 3 parts. It's lengthy, but worth it. More live performance, and use of surrounding reverb. And lyrically and musically it's brilliant.

Not only does his raw pitchiness not matter to me, but I find it a positive breath of fresh air in these days of highly manicured autotuned banalities. A raw, live, one-take, one-mic record of vocal passion beats the crap out of the artifice that is our usual lot.
@TheChristOfRockNRoll Жыл бұрын
Singers like Ren gets away with being slightly and every now and then inaccurate pitch wise in fact this fact enhances his art rather than diminish it. That is because his soulful raw emotions overcompensates for pitch imperfections and comes across as expressive and at times elemental of conversationallike which is highly emotive. Auto-tune or even pitch corrections will erase this unique quality of artists like Ren. Not every singer can get away with this because they just don't have the depth of expression and intense feeling delivered by Ren type artists. While autotune will benefit the somewhat vocally weak singers on pitch matters it robs artists like Ren of character, expression and emotional connection. See how unfair the prevalent and standardised across the board use of this robotic device is upon artists if you are signed to a major record label.

My favorite part about this song, towards the end of the bridge, while she's sort of whisper wailing behind him, it's just something really magical that they captured with the two emotions here. you have Ren giving off this numb sadness, and then her in the background with so much more pain emoted, but at the same time repressed. Combined, it somehow reminds me of that fraction of a second just before you cry, that tight, almost warm feeling you get in your throat, and then all the music drops out and it feels just like the tears fall. I don't know, I wish there was a word for it, i'm not even sure that description is coherent enough to follow, but it just fascinates me that they were able to both somehow capture that, and then convey it back to us.

I always felt that this song is a duality of the inner thoughts of one person, the ying and yang of our personality. This is the significance of the power outage before he gets the chair and guitar. Great reaction! I really enjoy hearing your thoughts. I do feel, a little, that we lost out on hearing your initial reaction to it. I appreciate the honesty and I get if that sort of unknown can be daunting to broadcast, given the subject matters he touches on in his lyrics, but it's something very authentic about seeing someone experience it for the first time. I have thought about why that is, and I can only speak for myself here, but I think it is a little bit like experience it for the first time again. Anyway, if you do end up doing the Tale of Jenny and Screech trilogy I would ask you to at least consider doing it as a blind reaction - at least consider recording your initial reaction and then make up your mind if you feel comfortable putting it online. It’s quite impressive. Now, having you point out that the way he uses his voice, while very good singing, indicates him teaching himself. I like that you noticed the intentionality of the sound before he starts playing. The sound of the chair snapping open reminds me of the classic jail cell door closing sound, which sets a trapped kind of feeling for me. And then he starts, "I'm still here in this bed that I crawled in." Just sublime. Ren is very deliberate, and has remarked that he thinks of his videos as part of the song creation process. It's a crazy ride, but if you're familiar with Orwellian themes, you might be interested in his "Animal Flow." It's a great example of his creativity, his thoughts on society, and his willingness to just let it all hang out there without worrying about how contemporary music should be. I love it, but it took me several watches to better understand it. If you like storytelling, The Tales of Jenny and Screech trilogy should be next. He embraces each with an imperfect sound and hints of "improper" pronunciation. It's masterful how his performance draws you in. ("Money Game" is also great storytelling, though completely different.) I understand his mother is a singer, but I'm not sure what he was taught. I know he learned to play guitar watching videos of Hendrix and John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers). He first started selling music by producing beats and making CDs of them when he was young. He began attending a musical college, in Bath I think, but dropped out sĥortly when he became too ill to attend. He was bedridden for a long time, but read a lot and philosophized a lot, as well as wrote and practiced. He also plays bass, drums and piano, and creates his own beats.

Anti-depressants, but also other pills for chronic mental and physical pains. When KariSma says that the melody is kind of usual, well-known, pop-like, then I feel like it's specifically made dull just like the emotional state of people on those pills. There are clearly deep emotions going on in the words (and the singers bring them out vocally towards the end), but the guitar always floats somewhere in the middle, 'afraid' or 'unable' to stray from the 'lifeless' centre.

You need to listen to more Ren to truly appreciate his vocals. I can guarantee that he'll surprise you! He has a great voice. Capable of multiple voices, styles and tones. More powerful than you'd think and with oodles of control. He understands vocal light and shade very well and adds little subtleties and nuances. It may help to know that his vocal icons are Nina Simone and Jeff Buckley. I'd recommend "Man's World" to hear yet another side of Ren. It's part of a trio of songs, sung with Sam Tompkins, whilst busking in Brighton. It's a good place to start, for certain. His live acoustic version of murder is another. After a while you realise that a lot that you thought was relatively random, is very deliberate. He also loves to play around on the edges of imperfection, which is always something that I love in a musician. He'll sometimes do the same while playing an instrument. He loves his guitars but he can play ten instruments well. Half of them ridiculously well! He also lays down all his own music/beats and is a top-notch producer. He directs most of his own videos too. Most of them recorded live, in a single take. As with this song and Hi Ren. His lyricism is fantastic. He's a poet really. He also raps like a rap god, with incredible flow and constant changes of flow and cadence. He also has a wicked sense of humour, which pops up frequently. He's entirely self-taught Mostly in the gaps in the chronic pain caused by his array of serious medical conditions. The one exception is his voice. He was helped on some basic vocal techniques, by his mother who, funnily enough, is a vocal coah! :)

Chalk outlines are actually drawn around the surviving victims of a violent crime, documenting where they were positioned, before being removed by paramedics to attempt lifesaving treatment. Corpses are able to be left at the scene long enough for crime-scene photographers to record where they lay and what happened, but the potential survivors only get a chalk outline. If they don't survive medical treatment the chalk outline may be their only testimony of what happened to them. It's an extremely common misconception about chalk outlines only being drawn around dead bodies, rather than surviving victims...which is a great metaphor for how society views chronic illness. You are already perceived as dead by outsiders, or act in a way as if you may as well be dead, withdrawn, even though you're still alive. Drawing an outline around yourself? 😢

Chinchilla is an insane singer. You should really check out "how to be me" live with Ren and chinchilla and then her on her own with "fingers" live on hunger TV super crazy skills she has. You will really like it

I _believe_ Ren's mom is a vocal coach... so I'm pretty sure his apparent lack of concern for the technical aspects are born on the far side of training, not the lack of it. Plus the intro of Hi Ren is _not_ an easy thing to sing. Those glottal onsets up there in full head voice with chromatic shifts? Oh my my!

Hey man... Don't be skipping out on the 1st reaction. That's what we Ren fans are looking for. We want to connect with other reacting and feeling the same way we did when we first listened to his music. There's so much more gold in the Ren rabbit hole. So record and post the initial react.

I use to say Ren is perfectly imperfect in his singing. 😂 ...and he is a modern day Shakespeare as you will find out sooner or later.😊

The Verve's guitarest gave Ren this guitar after his Retake of Bitter Sweet Phymphony, you should check it out a wonderful look at the UK.

I'm so glad the pitch is not perfect. We have an overabundance of pitch corrections and uato-tune as it is. It's so refreshing to hear real, raw voices and duets.

As someone who can play guitar, but not sing... I hate it when people figure it out (I actually love it, but you know what I mean) I just dont get it when someone can hear a note and know instinctively what it is, every song I learn to play has to be read until I learn it. It's a fantastic talent you have to hear like that.

Rens Mother is a singing teacher , I believe he has got to a professional point of being able to sacrifice perfection for feeling in a very natural way ,the immediacy of the performance seems paramount to him. Chinchilla is at her best in her orignal song ,Fingers Live For HungerT.V.that performance is exceptional and shows her range and voice control, coupled with her theatrics it is hauntingly unforgettable .They have another duet How To Be Me which in my opinion , even a little better than this one , I think they were more used to singing with each other at that time . Nice reaction , thank you
