At this point, hundreds of thousands of people have been internally displaced because of the brutal Burmese Military Regime who have been arbitrarily murdering, maiming, committing sexual violence towards, forcibly relocating, and torching houses of, innocent civilians. They have also imprisoned pro- democracy journalist and activists, no one is safe there.
Feb. 1, 2022 is the one year mark since the Burmese Military Junta staged a bloody coup, ousted the democratically elected Government and turned what was a burgeoning democracy on it’s head. And the fighting is just intensifying. There hasn’t been support from the International community and the citizens have done a fiercely brave and incredible job of standing up for themselves. There are still daily protests all across the country, calling for the Junta to step down, and all of the ethnic armies fight with their lives daily, the CDM (Civil Disobedience Movement) and PDF (People’s Defense Force) movements are making change. Villagers who have already been worn down by Covid, economic crisis, and the Coup are also helping their own people, from inside Myanmar and from Thailand. The Burmese diaspora is helping worldwide.
I think it is fair to say that there is a lot of turmoil in the world and not everyone can care about each crisis, so we thank you very much for your contribution here, for whatever reason made you want to help.
Here is a recent article written by a journalist who went into the informal camps of refugees and IDPs with us this week, along the Moei River, in Mae Sot, Tak, Thailand, this is the real story of what is happening: www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/1...
The IDP and refugee camps, don’t have enough drinking water or food, and with recent, unseasonal rains in Thailand, they have had to sit in the cold downpour with no cover. Diarrhea and cold like illness is rampant and people are wearing down from living in extreme conditions and stress for so long. A hot, clean meal, warm blanket, pain reliever med, drinking water, goes so far to keep them going.
Here are some ways you can help:
1. Donate funds so that we can continue to purchase dry food goods and essentials in bulk and prepare emergency ration packs for families and hot meals, drinking water, medicines.

That's our abuela's stories. It's so hard to explain the Latin and the immigrant experience, pero Lin really showed how the generational trauma is born - not out of entitlement - out of fear and loss and so much love that it becomes this survival mission to keep going. I cried and feel grief for all mi gente whose land, people, families, and loved ones have all been lost to our countries destabilized and history broken. This song is so powerful and I'm so grateful it was sung in Spanish - it means that much more to us.

I actually think NOT hearing Abuela Alma scream makes the heartbreak more impactful. You can tell from the pain, grief and anguish that she is devastated. I could even feel it just from watching it. And I don’t know if you noticed but Isabella and Mariano are practically identical to Alma and Pedro. It’s why Abuela was projecting; she wanted Isabella and Mariano to have the life she never got to have with Pedro, which put so much pressure on Isabella.

I wailed and sobbed when my brother was killed. The sound of my own scream from that night is seared into my memory. I think that without hearing Alma's scream, it leaves it open for us to project our own traumatic experiences onto what's happening in the scene. For me, it made me think of the night my brother was killed, and that's much more powerful than any voice over they might have added.

My favourite detail in this whole movie is how Mirabel’s clothes have butterflies on them - mariposas. Abuela Alma is the Oruguita: holding on too tight, so afraid of change in a world that never stops changing. Mirabel is the mariposa who teaches the family to let the walls down, look to tomorrow, embrace change, and reunite.

One of the subtle Easter eggs in the movie is that the bloodline family members have a symbol embroidered on their clothing that represents their miracle -- except Mirabel, who has symbols for all of her family embroidered on her skirt.

This movie was based on a Colombian civil war (Political Left-wing vs Right wing) after the assassination of President Jorge Eliecer Gaitan, over 2.5 million Colombians had to flee their land, my great grandfather lost his farm basically lost everything so this song cut deep, I'm sure a lot of people in the world can relate to this story.

I’m glad that other ethnicities are not only represented through physical appearance but through cultural significance as well. Some people like to overlook truth in fiction because they see a Disney movie and dismiss it as just that, but their ignorance blocks them from connecting and empathizing with others. Forceful displacement has been around in Colombia from the very beginning of the country. There is no political message or guilt towards anybody, just plain, old daily violence, like the one we see everyday in Colombia today

One detail that really caught my heart on this movie is that, when telling her story to her descendants, she spared them from the painful details. If you compare how she tells the story to Maribel years back and how she retells it every “door” event, in the memories, her young self is not crying, screaming in pain… She just looks a bit sad. This time, Maribel gets to hear how painful it actually was. Many times, our ancestors will not share the gruesome details of their past that have shaped them into what we have got to know of them. But the more we grow old, if we have the wisdom, we start understanding it and having mercy on them for their flaws…💔😔

I haven't seen this in the comments yet, but look at how Abuela moves throughout the song. From the care-free girl with the love of her life to the widow holding onto the miracle to protect her family. In the beginning she is swaying and over exaggerates her movements to then standing straight with minimal movements at the end. These are details I absolutely love and it just shows what she has gone through.

Everyone always talks about Bruno (and with good reason.. it's amazing!) but IMO Dos Oruguitas is the most powerful song in Encanto... and I think might be my favourite Lin song that he's written. That's a big call because it's up against some heavy hitters. I love that the scene HAS no dialogue, but you know exactly what is happening and what everyone is feeling at every moment - this is masterful storytelling both in the animation, editing, songwriting and performance. one thing I always appreciate about this scene is that you can see Mirabel reacting to what's happening around her as if she can see it and really feel what's going on. it's a clever way to visually show her empathy. she does this particularly in "surface pressure" and "what else can I do" as well.

This song really does such a great job. The candle was the holder of the magic, but to Mirabel's Abuela, it was the tombstone of her husband. A constant reminder of what she lost to get the magic that saved them. Since you watched the movie, I can point out that when Mirabel brings back the magic, there is no candle. I personally think Mirabel took its place. For Abuela though, the removal of the candle is a removal of the burden of her past. So many layers. It was such a well thought out movie, which just adds so much to songs that are also so beautiful.

I like both the spanish and english versions of this song The Spanish has more emotion, you could tell the guy singing in the studio was feeling the emotion of the scene and I'm glad that this version was the one shown on screen. The English version is musically better. The singer uses a stronger approach, and belts more, so you can really admire the vocals.

Honestly i feel like it's more powerful that you couldnt hear her scream, because the animators did such a good job of making her pain and agony so painfully visible on her expression and in her entire physical reaction to losing her husband, that you can feel the scream in your soul even though you cant hear it. Not only was the music everything in this movie, the VISUALS were everything, so seeing Alma cry instead of hearing it was more emotionally impacting, they did that on purpose because that was all in the past, same as how they never allowed you to hear what the grandfather or her voices sound like when they were younger

The animation is non-diegetic except for the sound of the horses' hooves, because it's not a character song. Of course, we know that that's Abuelo Pedro, but he is not a character in the story, per se. And not hearing what actually happens except for the horses (and even that is not at all loud), gives the scene a cinematic effect. We're watching it happen and not hearing Abuela Alma scream and cry is more heightened, than if we did. It's almost like we hear ourselves cry for her.

I was glad they didn't include the sound of her scream. I've heard that kind of scream and anguish in real life and my mind filled in the sound on its own, my chest constricted, my heart clenched, and my throat tightened. It's the kind of sound that no matter how good an actor is they truely cannot duplicate it. I was shocked they animated that facial expression so well. That sound comes from a deep place and is full of such grief and anguish that I hope most people never hear it.

My favorite bit about this scene is how it contrasts with the way this story is told in the beginning. In the beginning, the story is told with just enough detail for us as the audience to understand, while minimizing the emotional impact, much like how an adult would tell a child the story. But here in this scene, we get all of the raw anguish, something that probably no other family member had ever seen or been told.

No sé hablar inglés, pero creo que no pusieron el grito en esa parte porque el momento "fuerte" de la canción viene adelante. The way this movie depicted generational trauma is unlike any other movie I've ever seen. It makes a lot of different, seemingly conflicting ideas coexist as all simultaneously true and shows that she is not a black and white character. She's not a bad person, but she cultivated a toxic environment that had a bad impact on her and everyone else. She had good reasons to be afraid, but that doesn't eliminate the fact that she has inadvertently hurt her family and failed to recognize it until things got critical. She didn't fail to realize out of ill intent, She was blinded and paralyzed by fear. There's so, so many layers and so much uniqueness to her character and at the same time she's, sadly, a reflection of a reality that a lot of latin american families have lived and still live. She's not a bad person at heart, she's a product of cirumstance. Her neglect and hypervigilance, her need to control everything and everyone around her while turning on a blind eye to the damage it is doing are all bad things and this movie makes it very clear that she was in the wrong. We see all the anxiety she created in her family and their suffering is never downplayed to justify Alma's behaviour. At the same time, we all know she's a fundamentally good person, even if her trauma has driven her to make choices that hurt other people. She's not the villain or the hero, she's a victim of the true antagonist of the film: environment and circumstance. It's not easy to make that message come across in a movie, yet the writers did it masterfully. The sincerity and care that went into this film is just...out of this world.

I am so glad that the little Spanish I learned in High School was enough for me to work out the lyrics to this song the first time I heard it. (Granted i had to listen to it like 5 times in a row) Knowing the meanign of the words really makes that whole scene hit so much harder.

I think they totally modeled Pedro after Sebastián Yatra's face. And if it was intentional, it would also mean that this song is Pedro's last letter to Alma. He wants her to move on.

Listening to this song again, I've just noticed that when abuela sings her verse in the Familia madrigal song she uses the melody of this song.

You have to listen to the last verse! You’ve caught the change in vocals as Sebastian Yatra moves from talking about the caterpillars to the pupae but you’ve missed the song’s final change into butterflies. I’d recommend both looking into a translation to see how the themes impact the performance but for sure listen to the final verse. Right now this misses the uplift that is the payoff to the pain you’ve ended on.

I think when Abuela screamed you didn't need to hear. When they did a scene in Harry Potter where Daniel Radcliffe had to scream after his godfather was killed they said it was such a blood curdling one that they muted it. You can still feel the pain though.

This sad asf :/ I was so engrossed with how pretty it was when I first watched it that I really missed how emotional this was, minus Alma's genuine reaction to Pedro's death vs. the more muted way it was depicted at the beginning of the film; I _felt_ that grief from the first time I saw it. But the whole tragedy of the scene didn't strike me until my second watch. That woman went _through_ it and it explains so much about hiw she allowed her family to suffer in turn without realizing it. Ugh, I can't with this movie!

In interviews Linn Manuel said that he didn't want to do an English version of the song ,but Sebastian the singer beagged him for one. Sebastian told Linn Manuel that he wanted to keep the Spanish words for caterpillars and butterflies and Linn Manuel agreed to write it
