I completely understand that feeling, feeling left out and trapped even within your own family, not finding your place, living different lives and adapting depending on the people you are with. I am thankful for people like you, who, in addition to making great reactions and analysis, also fight to create safe environments for people like me, who have no one to lean on. I could write more things but this message is already too long... Thank you very much for your support and kindness. Greetings from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

my sister is trans and at first that was how she dressed too. She took inspiration from the women she saw the most. She's been out of the closet for years and she has her own style now. But it's not as easy as telling the world and immediately going to the store and buying a new wardrobe. You need to discover your style first. It's just difficult in the beginning.

Alex is so phenomenal. Their only performance that I think has more extraordinary vocals with the is “I know where I’ve been.” Which they performed on the show in a later season. But also performed with the gay man’s chorus (I can’t remember the specific group) but it is absolutely incredible. The latter is live so I’ll leave it up to you which version you’d prefer to listen to. *Alex also sang this more recently for an AIDS Walk New York video and it’s also out of this world. Different choices were made but just as powerful a performance. They’re vocals are just so good.

@@danielblair9535 an amazing trans chorus on glee. Didn’t mean to take away from that. It's amazing how Glee can have Blurred Lines and this in the same episode. The show is so weird but I love it. Also, the reason Ryder looks back at Sam and Jake is because he had been angry with Unique for catfishing him. He couldn't see past the betrayal and try to understand where she was coming from until that moment in the performance.
@tempest2789
@tempest2789 2 жыл бұрын
Is that the reason? 🤔 The show never acknowledged the catfishing after S4 ended. In S5, Ryder and Unique barely show any animosity between each other. I'm pretty sure the looks Ryder gives Sam and Jake are a silent agreement to go beat up the dudes who bullied Unique
@Creeperahah98
@Creeperahah98 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree with the previous comment, also, if I remember correctly they concluded and made peace about that in the same episode, clearing that Ryder couldn't yet trust her back because of it but there was no hard feelings because the girls talked to him about it to put him in her shoes and make him understand. If not in that same episode, this happened up to two or three episode after, not further.
@Heida77

I agree with the beginning but the look between the 3 of them was a “we know what we gotta do look” it’s something real common between us guys because right when she finished singing all three of them hopped up like “who did it we gon kick they ass for you”
@denaspohn5207
@denaspohn5207 5 ай бұрын
I thought they just dropped it. I think Ryder had a pretty typical response when Unique admitted she had catfished him because he was a straight boy and emotionally he couldn't really see Unique as a girl then. So for him to think he had fallen for a girl who in his mind was a boy was the big thing. He would be freaked out by it like it meant he might be gay. It was dropped as far as I know. Yes, the guys were t'd off and would have beaten up the bullies.

As a gay man in my 60's I was never even close to being 'transphobic,' but I was mighty uncomfortable with my lack of empathy towards transexuals. I just could not put myself in those specific gender dysphoric shoes even though I had worked hard over the years to get people who had the same ignorance with gays to find a shoehorn. So I decided to watch some youtube channel content by transitioning /transitioned youth so that I could better understand the world from their perspective. It works! I stopped identifying with the confused loved ones of a transitioning youth, and started identifying with who I really needed to. Every once in a while I still need a refresher, and KZbin is my tutorial. We never had anything like that in the 1970's and 80's.

I did not follow Glee, so this was my first time seeing this clip. What a powerful and moving performance! I am not familiar with this vocal coach. I love her already. The empathy that she showed brought me to tears, too. There is no excuse to hate someone simply for being different than us. We are all our original selves and different in many ways. It's a shame to throw someone away based on something so superficial. I very much so relate to Rupaul's proposal that we in the LGBTQIA+ community create our own non-blood Family. Your blood is your family, but the genuine friendships that you make along the way can be just as powerful and intimate a bond. I didn't tell my family that I had a boyfriend for the first time until I was 30. At this point, I had been dating men for 10 years. I can't express the fear, shame and disappointment that you feel towards yourself, not to mention your family, when your environment does not allow you to be your authentic self. We all need love and support.

Gosh I love her voice! Also i personally feel like the writers did Unique so dirty! The club members acted as if Unique was a costume that she could just take on and off, there was that whole catfish storyline, and she only returned later on to help push Sheldon’s storyline. I would say that they treated Sheldon’s transition with way more care than they did with Unique’s story and it’s just not fair. I know that sheldon’s story was two yrs later so different times or whatever, but i wish they gave Unique a better send off (even in s6)

Well Alex was initially only supposed to make two appearances on the show, and I think it made the story more real by showing that she made mistakes just like everyone else. And I feel like her one true friend, Marley, treated her like she deserved to be treated as well as Kurt and Mercedes. Realistically at that time there were more people who didn’t fully understand than those who did even if they showed acceptance. I think Sheldon had an easier storyline because of Unique.
@soph4850

I wasn’t a fan of Sheldons transition imo, because they spent the whole show saying that he was breaking the stereotype and being a strong woman in sports, and then they threw away a perfectly fine transitioning character and suddenly changed Sheldons whole storyline to create a different transitioning character. Yes I still believe it was important but it was just completely off everything they’d said previously about Sheldons character

@@soph4850 This! I thought exactly the same. A big part of Beistes storyline, was that he felt and wanted to be seen as a woman, despite his appearance and his job. And i loved that. I loved, that they fought stereotypes with his character, especially with his vulnerable moments. But letting him transition felt like giving in to a cliché. There is a "masculine" woman with a "masculine" job? She MUST be transgender🤡 They just should've handled Uniques transition better and let Beiste be, what he was: a woman, who was herself and fought to be seen as exactly that. (Sorry for my English, it's not my first language)
@FatimaLopez-jr1th
@FatimaLopez-jr1th 2 жыл бұрын
This!! I loved Beiste's storyline up to the transition because we finally had a "tomboy" storyline where she still wanted to be seen and feel like a woman. And the abuse storyline was really good, too, so sad, but good. When Beiste started transitioning, I felt a bit cheated, to be honest. If you are a woman that likes "manly" things and is "strong" and "manly", you obviously want to be a man, right? Glad to see I am not the only one that felt like that.

@H W I'd like to point out that this is actually the real life story of many trans people. I have seen every episode of Glee like 100 times. One of those times were before high school started and I had to skip over this song to keep myself from crying because I hate the idea of random strangers seeing me cry. This song was so powerful and I never understood just how powerful the song was until this episode came out. Alex Newell is such an amazing singer and does such a great job at portraying characters like this. Granted, I have never seen a single episode of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist but I have seen the cast do a cover of I Wanna Dance With Somebody Who Loves Me by Whitney Houston and I noticed Alex Newell and made the assumption that his character was also transgender because of the amazing job he did portraying Wade “Unique” Adams on Glee. I feel like this comment went from a story about how I didn’t want to cry at my high school took a Unique turn about how much I love Alex Newell. Hahaha (see what I did there) Love you Alex!

Interestingly, despite playing a mtf trans character on Glee, Alex actually uses they/them pronouns in real life. Mo from ZEP is closer to their real-life self, though that character is usually tagged with he/him pronouns. Fun fact, Alex has a rare voice type called male soprano, that's why they can sing so high.

I personally think this is one of the most groundbreaking, meaningful and worthy performance glee has left us. When I was younger and this came up, I suddenly felt seen, even if I'm not a MtF trans person, I am queer and gender non-conforming, I'm not sure what exactly can describe me, but I'm sure I'm not "just a guy", and i know there's more to it for me. Anyway, this changed forever the way I saw the song and gave it a completely new light, I wonder if Beyoncé ever reacted to this interpretation of her song, I'd like to see what emotions and thought this performance gives her, or the people who wrote this song even, because the meaning of it was not meant to fit so perfectly the feeling of not being what other people see in you just based on your genitalia.

As someone who’s gay myself and has been quite on a journey to acceptance- and still has a fear of coming out to some people sometimes as, well you never just come out once. Alex’s vocals and the feelings behind it, just speak. It makes me want to just hug them because I can definitely relate to their words and their feelings. It’s such a powerful performance. I hope the world will continue to learn compassion, kindness and acceptance.

He’s in one right now - Shucked (he plays a woman named Lulu). And his role is larger in this one than it was in Once Upon An Island. He’s excellent and his main solo song was a show stopper. So good!

This whole scene breaks me. I don’t care much about the song itself but their version is wonderful. The scene where the guys look at each other ends with them fighting to defend Unique and I always cry 😅

I am the same, I enjoy this song but I'm not a huge fan of it. But this version just gets me every time. It breaks me every single time I hear it.

I can't watch this series more than one time cause there are so many ep and so many emotions and the last reason is the actors who passed away, i can't watch and stop thinking that i can't meet them in real life anymore that's so sad

I just found your channel now. I adore you and your outlook. I am genetically female and have masculine vocal chords. Possibly due to being a twin and a premi. I was a theater student and was forced to stretch my voice to soprano to get "girl" parts. My niece and nephew love my slightly deeper voice and it puts them to sleep almost instantly. I have no idea how hard it is to be transgendered. I just know how hard it was to be a straight female in the arts with a deeper voice. It was bad.

@@SongsFromASuitcase I'm a nanny now and the babies love my deeper voice. Especially my nice and nephew. I can get them to sleep about halfway through disturbed sound of silence ❤. Thank you. What you wrote made me tear up a little and I just wish my voice coach was like you when I was in high-school.
