I'm always amazed at how many metalheads like classical music but also that there are enough classical music lovers who at least appreciate metal. I know that neither the metalheads nor the classical music lovers will declare the other music genre as their new love, but it seems to me that there is much more understanding than I used to expect. I was lucky enough to see Angela Gossow live and she was great. She was a tornado, pure energy. The whole concert was like a spin cycle in the washing machine. Unbelievable and unforgettable.

I'm not sure it someone commented that, but the most amazing thing about this band is that their main songwriter, Michael Amott (the one with red hair, he writes majority of the music and half of the lyrics) is completely self-taught musician. I assume, he had some music theory lessons (but I cant be sure in that), but his guitar skills are completely self-developed by copying other musicians he loved back in his childhood. While the other guitarist, Christopher Amott, his brother, actually attended a musical college and contributed a lot to their sound with his music knowledge. He left the band a couple of times saying that he was going to pursue other interests and other genres of music, while he still joins them onstage or on tour when they have any problem with guitarists, and sometimes as a guest musician. But even if he was going to play some different music, now he ended up being lead guitar player for another Swedish band playing the same genre, it's called Dark Tranquillity.

There's also Tairrie B from My Ruin and Candace Kucsulain from Walls of Jericho and a few others from the late 90's early 2000's. Really liked the video. Three points I would make. First, Angela seems to gain expression and pitch over other growlers through vowel mutation, at least as I hear it. Second, I have heard the growling over guitar melody referred to as the Arch Enemy trick; seems fair. Third, I have seen via video two performers who held an audience captive waiting with excitement for the performer to make a move: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, and Angela Gossow in Japan 2008.
@Sense0084 жыл бұрын
I do not want to underestimate the importance of Angela Gossow as a female extreme vocalist. Really her importance is enormous but she was not the first to do so, she did popularise the concept though. Just want to say that Tatiana was inspired by another female vocalist that being the vocalist of Otep, Otep Shamaya, who does switch between cleans and growls. BTW Angela Gossow today is Archenemy's manager and her vocalist role has been taken over by Alyssa White-Gluz... Interesting technique differences between the two. Angela Gossow uses a False Chord growl, which takes a LOT of air and is typically much more raw, Alyssa on the other hand uses Fry Screams. Both are good vocalists but my personal preference will always be Angela Gossow, her False Chord growls are just that much more intense and powerful imo.
@Rosannasfriend4 жыл бұрын
They may be more powerful, but I think Angela's technique wasn't as healthy as Alissa's. I remember somebody saying that, I can't remember if it was a fan or a coach. So the false chord method clearly isn't as healthy, and that may be why she left the band.
@Sense0084 жыл бұрын
@@Rosannasfriend Falsechord screams are not neccesarily more unhealthy, but doing them in a healthy way is much harder than doing Fry Screams in a healthy way. I'm not hating on Alyssa btw, or Angela stepping back to be the manager of the band. I just enjoy Angela's scream more, just personal preference

Thanks from an Arch Enemy fan. Their current vocalist for some time now -- Alissa White-Gluz -- also does a fine job (she's also from Canada). If you are interested in the technical aspects of this kind of singing the leading expert in the field is vocal coach "Mary Z" (Zimmer) at "VoiceHacks". She has posted a number of instructional videos online, including: "The 3 Arch Enemy Vocalists -- Vocal Coach Mary Z Reacts"; ... "Distorted Vocals Defined -- Different Types of Screams"; ... and "How to Fry Scream (safely -- without hurting your voice)". For reaction videos, the queen of all songs for vocal coaches to react to has to be Floor Jansen's 2013 Wachen performance of "Ghost Love Score" by band Nightwish. I have seen reviewers get over 400 comments within 48 hours of posting a review on this song! -- E.g. vocal coach Julia Nilon posted her Ghost Love Score review on June 26, and as of now (I am writing as of June 30 at 12:00 Midnight US Eastern Time) has logged 1,217 comments! Good luck!

It is awsome to see a classic vocalist enjoying diverse musical styles. I love your reviews and reactions. Check out Demon Hunter, "Not I". They are one of the very few Christian metal bands. They offer great transitions between deep melody, screaming, and deep lyrics. I've loved them for over 15 years.

She’s awesome in concert I got to see her on her last tour I guess she had to leave the band because her throat was messed up because she was in this band for 10 years and now she’s the manager i don’t know if that’s true but that’s what I heard

Respectfully, when you record audio from external speakers pointed at a mic also recording your voice, sometimes the audio can echo and muddle up quite a bit, especially if one is simultaneously capturing the same audio directly from desktop, as you appear to be. Solution is headphones or different mic settings. Thanks for the passionate content.
