This is another one of my favorites from angelina, and it doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves. Even though (as you mentioned) she is working out some of the phrasing on the fly, it gives it an unpolished feel that makes it all the more charming. It blows my mind that this is a sixth grader delivering this song with this much feeling.

Rusty, do you know if Angelina will still have the same freedom as to what she does on the internet or will Republic minimize what she does???

@@theoxley I can't answer that as I don't know the details of her contract. What I _do_ know is that Angelina has been writing her own story since pre-school, so I doubt that she is going to be swayed by anyone on the vision she has for herself.

@@RustyShacklefordChannel I hope so. The big record companies have such a tight fist and control over their artists. If this were to happen to our little girl....I hope she doesn't get discouraged and that her "fire" she has for her craft slows down. Hopefully in her contract there will be some leniency towards her creativity as to releasing personal work such as her cover songs.

Love your honest & thorough reactions. It's never a "oh it gave me goosebumps, so good". You actually teach us/help us understand while reacting. I can totally see what you mean about the placement & scanning. As you said, it seemed like she was unsure of how to pronounce certain words. Makes me wonder if this was their first run of the song. Hopefully you can react to her new material, her original song "Million Miles" if you haven't already. Its really beautiful & moving. Also, I think that Angelina is a real musical prodigy and she knows her instrument & its capabilities so well, that she knows she doesn't need to do unnecessary belting or adorning of her vocals like we are so accustomed to here in the States. When she did it for AGT I truly believe she did it to cater to the type of audience that is used to those extras + im sure someone told her Simon loves those extras & wanting to impress him she most likely catered to that. That being said, Angelina is the real deal & I feel like she has a very deep connection/understanding of music & a total respect for what she does. It's always a pleasure listening to her & listening to you as well! (Sorry for the long rant🙊). Feel better soon! Happy new year!

Thank you, Miki, for yet another great PROFESSIONAL reaction to Angelina. Both Adele and Bob Dylan would be proud of her. The guitarist is Egil Clausen. She works with him often when she is in Norway. Another guitarist she works with in Scandinavia is Staffan William-Olsson from Sweden. When she is in Los Angeles, she works a lot with Ivan Mendez. All three of them are very accomplished musicians. May I request that you react to Angelina singing her latest release from Republic Records, "Million Miles" (the live studio version). Hello, thanks for the reaction. I am a little confused. In 30 years as a musician I am just learning the difference between a singer and a musical narrator. Angelina, as she never sings the same song (because she is always telling musical stories) sometimes the sounds are not perfect but they sound perfect within the narration, that strange feeling ends up being inexplicable for people like me who love the song as a context, I differentiate here from others people and listeners who follow the melodic line as such. In 8 years of study of harmony I always believed that total harmony in musical composition was as the word says, until Angelina arrives and says now that the narration can make dissonances creating a better dimensionality. I hope you understand my comment, happy new year

Another good reaction! I enjoy your appreciation of Angelina. I think the little "imperfections" in phrasing, timing or pronunciation are often (not always) conscious choices by Angelina in the performance we are watching. I feel like all her performances are fluid. Every song that I have listened to that has multiple versions shows her willingness (and desire) to vary from some "set in stone" formula. I also think that some vocabulary mispronunciations are as likely to be age-related as language related. Even American adults mispronounce words they may be unfamiliar with in written form. I, also, think it's cute. I also believe (I have absolutely no actual knowledge of this) that she chooses this setting (the empty "reverb"/echo room) for certain songs where it adds to the emotion of the song. It's easy enough to dampen that effect, if you don't like it. The musical maturity of Angelina is certainly amazing. ,,,ramble, ramble,,, Thanks, Feel better! Happy New Year.

Interesting point about her language history affecting her singing, something to listen for. Not surprisingly, this performance didn't move me like the two she did in memory of her beloved grandfather. Not sure what I am hearing that makes me say that, but here they are: "Return To Me": kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKnIeoewh61ko9E , and "Always On My Mind": kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpWbo2qZYplgodU . P.S. I love this girl and her singing! As many people said before: she can be therapeutic! As young as she is she can comfort inner souls with that low voice! (you'll be surprised of the emotional comments) But also I'm jealous and think she is lucky! She had so much lovingly support from home and is born with so many skills. First of all her ears, which are able to hear, unconsciously analyze through some musical black box, and guide the coordination of her vocal chords. These ornamentations are so precise and yet tasteful! And somewhere along the way she developed this timing in her phrasing, which you don't hear with many contemporary singers. She was lucky for many skills more, but we are lucky to witness her growing up and sharing her talent! And it's nice that you can analyze what is happening in her little voice box!!! And appreciate it!

Very smart reaction, you taught me some things. I've seen her before read the lyrics while singing and seeming to be working out her interpretation on the fly. I also enjoy her special pronunciation of some words, it adds flavor.

I agree with all you say, Miki, when it comes to how she lean into some words and her phrases, which are different from most others. But that is also what makes her unique in my opinion, even with more work on the songs, she might have almost the same approach. However, it is also important to remember that Norwegians have their own kind of flow in their language. It is slightly different even from Danish and Swedish, but of course not in the direction of Russian, Spanish, French, and even German "English flow" of their language, which stand out. Now, Angelina is speaking several languages, have spoken fluently English since she was very young, but still sometimes have that slight Norwegian or Scandinavian flow to it. If you take a listen to another Norwegian, Aurora, you will hear it much clearer there, she has her own special flow in her English, very unique. Some reactors have pointed out the same as you, and one (Maunalee) even saw it as a negative for Angelina, commenting her pronunciation, which is off target in my opinion when it comes to music. There are indeed great singers around the world without that English perfection. Singing and music are and should be considered and judged by its musicality and music deliverance only. As an Indonesian singer myself, I think that is important. But you didnt comment this in any bad way, on the contrary, you saw the cuteness in Angelina here, as anyone should. Thank you for a very insightful and great reaction 👍

Maunalee has a hangup with pronounciation which is really stupid. Singers are artists..musicians not diction, speech therapists....giving speeches.....they are creative. Anytime a singer a singer uses some forms of vibrato the pronounciation of a word changes, anytime a singer draws out vowels, the pronounciation of a word changes..ANY prolonged part of a word or letter changes pronounciation and the phrasing in a song. Musicians that play instruments do the same thing...they, as well as vocalists “play” with the music....that is what they do! I have gone off on Maunalee a couple of times for her thinking that she is being so observant and correct when actually she is just being finding a way to be critical as well as ignorant. I would love to hear Maunalee sing....I would put money on Maunalee not “phrasing” everything “perfectly” “as intended” or “pronouncing” every word perfectly while be exact to the the writer of the lyrics and music....and the proper English language, In fact I would put money on it. AJ is more talented than she could possibly ever understand it seems. To me in order to be taken seriously as a reactor and not just watched for “entertainment” is to know what you are talking about and Maunalee has shown me more than a few times that she is not.
@sarlina1
@sarlina1 3 жыл бұрын
@@lizlessner2228 Agree. Maunalee is too often leaning into details that have no saying, and make no sense in any musical delivery. One other example is when she reacted to "Song for A", She made a point of all the errors (typos) in the language, from Robert Burns Scottish poem from 1783.. She stated that she worked at a library for children books, and knew what she was talking about.. Well, Maunalee has her moments, but it is impressive to miss the target so many times. Stay safe and well, Liz, I wish you a happy new year 👍🎉

@@sarlina1 Totally agree. Maunalee has incorrectly criticized Angelina too often for my taste. I also note that Egil, in a recent interview, explained that these videos of them just sitting together are impromptu and unrehearsed, always first or rarely second takes, grandma or mom holding the phone. One will suggest a song, the other says yeah I think I know that, so they do it. He says it is his way to keep her practice sessions fun and interesting for her at such a young age. Very impressive.

Your reactions always have substance. I've wanted to hear her do a Dylan song (even though I assume many think of Adele's cover). You are not the first to remark on her pronunciation. I have listened to her over and over and I don't notice it (and do I have a PhD in English), but that may just be me. From I Put a Spell on You on down, she is often consulting the lyrics, even while turning in remarkable vocal performances.
@alanoakley3242
@alanoakley3242 3 жыл бұрын
So glad you pointed out that reading the lyrics has affected the way the song was delivered. Next time around she'd get the cadence better but what's impressive is that she a) carries on and b) posts the imperfect rendition anyway. Nobody usually gets to see or hear the countless mess-ups and aborted takes even the best singers discard before they release their finished product. I recently found an early studio take of a Supremes song in which Diana Ross makes several mistakes that she obviously ironed out before the take that wound up on vinyl. One of Angelina's idols, Ella Fitzgerald, was so prone to forgetting lyrics that she famously often dispensed with them in favour of random syllables, which is not as easy as it sounds. Angelina, in many cases, is offering up a first take or rehearsal. It turns out that we enjoy them so much that there's little point in doing them over but it's also clear she had no intention to.

Thanks for another pro-grade reaction, Miki. My feeling is that the issues she had with her phrasing in a few places was more likely related to her familiarity with the song. It felt like a rehearsal to me, although a typical Angelina Jordan rehearsal which comes across better than 99% other pro singers out there after they have “perfected” the song. I’m sure she could’ve gone through this song another few times and nailed all the phrasing but that’s something I really appreciate about Angelina - the fact that she is willing to show vulnerability, be a human, that she doesn’t need to be perfect in every situation. She’s willing to show us rehearsals, she’s willing to show us an informal performance with Egil or Ivan (his counterpart in LA) where she’s pretty familiar with the song but hasn’t perfectly mastered every detail. To me it speaks to how genuine she is both as an artist and as a person.

Egil has been accompanying Angelina since she was seven(7), so they know each other very well and have superb communication. They seem to glance at each other more than usual in this piece which makes me wonder if this is her first "live" recording of it and they still aren't sure if it's what they want as a final product, not that anything she does is ever a final, final, product, every repetition has new nuances.

She is not ONLY sweet she is VERY VERY TALENTED, dear "vocal couch" - What an effort of yours to try to refer (so powerfully) that she is not a native English speaker and all. What a shame... Really wish you could have saved this part of your criticism to yourself dear vocal couch :) - and have more to say about her magical quality. She is magic, that's what she is. She simply has the ability to put a spell on anyone who has got a heart to feel. Hope you dont feel offended dear "VOCAL COUCH" :)

I agree she was stumbling a little over the lyrics out of unfamiliarity, which is unusual for her. I imagine this was a first take. Why she didn't do a cleaner version and put that out instead we'll never know.

An interview with the guitarist regarding their practice sessions revealed they typically sang a song once or twice with no preparation; so this could be the first time Angelina ever sang this song and possibly knew of the arrangement from distant memory.

Everything was going along very smoothly and then, well....... Angelina's slight accent is what it is and, for instance, her "w's" are beautiful to me. A lot of her unique phrasing is because she adds different dimensions to the melody to emphasis certain lyrics and that's when the song becomes her own. Her goal is not to absolutely mimic a song. To think she picks up the lyrics from a sheet of paper and then starts to sing.........no. Michal, my intention was not to hurt your feeling. And, I'm sure your intention was not to hurt mine. So, I hope we can be friends. In closing, isn't is wonderful to see someone like Angelina love so much what she's doing? Her smile says it all. Oh, make sure you have fresh air circulating in your new room.

Angelina is just so amazing. It is so great that we have so young talents coming up and I am looking forward to her compilation with republic records. Million miles is great, and I am hoping for more soon. Can you also react to Giulia Falcone ? She is 15 and a freaking great singer style similiar to Lara Fabian but she has developed her own style by now. She transformed a carpenters song ( Long to be close to you.) from the 70 ies to her style. Really nice. She also did covers of Dimashs SOS, je suis malade, Adagio, caruso, against all odds(Phil Collins), Imagine ( John Lennon’s) Creep (radioheads) etc. Please have a look. kzbin.info/aero/PLGr5gGwU548HLO9pRU32piV5OTSu062JL

I see a oneness between Angelina and the sound that she produces that I cannot find in any other singer. Whenever I hear someone comment, ‘you should watch/hear this other singer who is (insert any adjective)’, I watch to see whether I can see in them what I see in Angelina; but comparatively what I find are other people using a tool to complete a task. I keep returning to the insightful comments of the NTG judges upon first hearing Angelina sing, ‘You are music!’, ‘You were born to sing.’
