A lot of reactors seem to have the same sentiment about wishing they didn't get their powers back at the end, but there are a couple of reasons aside from it being for kids that I think it wouldn't have made sense for them to do that. The first, and main one, being that Casita was a big part of the family. In a movie that's all about repairing family bonds, it doesn't really make sense for them to completely permanently destroy such an important family member to make that point (one that saved all of the family members even as Casita themself was dying.) Secondly, they needed to very clearly show that Maribel didn't get her powers or door the first time around because she was meant to be the next head of the family, and not because of some mistake, like Abuela Alma (who also didn't have powers, btw.) They did that by making Mirabel's door be the front door, in which she was centered and in the forefront, like everyone else with their own doors. Thirdly, the movie wasn't about punishing the family by taking away their gifts, it was about showing them that their gifts weren't the most important thing about them. Without getting their gifts back they can't demonstrate that they've learned that lesson, or mainly that Abuela learned her lesson, by focusing on the family emotional support over magical perfection. Lastly, it's a Disney movie and they need to keep the option for a sequel open. ;)

Another reason is that it would send the wrong message that their gifts were the root of all their problems, when it was actually their lack of communication and irresponsible use of the gifts. It's a very good message to watch Luisa take a break or see Isabela get to express her true self in the ending song. It was thematically relevant that they get their gifts back.
@Me-wk3ix3 жыл бұрын
Good point. In the end, the point is that the gift itself is not good or bad. In the end, we aren't evil or good for having gifts. It's if it gets to the point that the gift is all we are and defines us.

Like you said, it wasn’t about punishing them. And I also thought that if they lost their powers completely, they wouldn’t be able to show if they learned the lesson properly bc they would be too busy adapting.

Really glad you liked the movie, regarding the magical thing, the story leans heavily into the concept of magical realism that is prominent ina lot of Colombian literature, that basically means that magical things happens in a day to day life and nobody questions it. From this also comes the extensive use of butterflies in the film since the greatest author of magical realism is Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez that uses a lot of butterflies throughout his works especially yellow ones in his best work "100 years of solitude".

@gmunden13 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this. I was about to explain the same thing, but you did a beautiful job. Many viewers not familiar with Colombian culture and the concept of magical realism misinterpreted the messages in this film. Also, no one is a "villain" in this as in most Disney films. Many viewers interpret Abuela and Bruno as villains but very early in the storytelling, it is clear that Bruno's "abscence" was a mystery, not necessarily one shrouded in "evil" but rather due to a family crisis.
@mauriciovillegas72853 жыл бұрын
This movie is not magical realism. Magical realism is a "everyday" story with random unexplained "magical" elements that people don't question because it's "normal" that such things happen sometimes. Magical realism comes from oral storytelling recounts of events where a "magical" elements were added by the narrator to try to explain events that were coincidences or nor scientific/logical explanation was available. Say a freak storm during a wedding: that happens, it's a natural event, but it's more interesting to blame people's mood or somebody cursing the wedding. This movie is fantasy with a realistic context: it's clearly in Colombia and the grandfather died due to an armed conflict, but magic is a constant in the story.
@theyoutubeanalyst37313 жыл бұрын
@@mauriciovillegas7285 this movie is trying to incorporate magical realism a bit, as much as they could. Because it's hard to really make a magical realism Disney movie if you're not basing the story on a real Latino tradition, and even that it would be a little weird, because it's Disney.

Surprising I like that they get their magic back at the end. So many movies end with “and the magic was gone from the world” in exchange for character growth. It was refreshing to have one story end with them being able to keep their magic, even if it is just for Disney to make some tv show or spin off with it later on. (I guess they learned their lesson from the Tangled tv series and having to make up a reason for Rapunzel to get her magic hair back lmao) Being mature doesn’t have to suck every inch of fun out of everything, so I’m glad they made the choice to keep some magic for this ending.

Agree with u. I liked that the magic came back because it helped Mirabel's story about her gift come to full circle, like she actually is the glue of the whole family, and the magic reflects that this is actually a magical thing in itself, showed through the font door mural and all. And the family having the gifts back also helps to contrast to how they r with their gifts before the whole casita dying part. Like before they were pressured, not really using their gifts in a healthy way for themselves. Then after the rebuilding, they r shown to be enjoying their gifts more and using it in a more healthy/happy way. Think that's important to the story too, cos it highlights that it's not the gifts that are bad, but the toxic expectations, arrogance and lack of boundaries which are bad. So in the ending, I feel it was important to see the gifts being used in a better way, rather than just 'oh, there's no more gifts to pressurise us, that's y we r happier' thing. Gift or no gift, it's about their attitude. And having the gifts around still, helps make that a clearer point.

I think it was rigth for them to recover their gifts, because throughout the film we had seen how they affected their lifes like in the case of Luisa, Isabela had just discovered her ability to make grow more than just flowers and how Pepa as her nieces couldn't show how she really felt because of the pressure her powers brought. If they lost their powers, what use would the songs and the other half of the movie do? I think that the ending they gave combines well with the story they show us and is less cliche. They didnt do it for the children but because the story needed it in that way

The more I think about it, the more I like that they're getting their magic back in the end. First, they're not getting it back immediately, they work for it. Their problems don't go away with that one conversation at the river, they work to rebuild their house (their family) and at the end are rewarded for that. Secondly, imo too many of these stories end with either the non-gifted getting a gift at the end or the other people losing theirs and that always feels to me like a very superficial solution. The problem wasn't that she didn't have a gift, the problems came from how the family dealt with that. Acknowledging that the solution isn't just stripping everybody else of their powers ("to drag them to Mirabel's level") feels actually more mature to me than the alternative.

I think the gifts were important parts of their lives, and that it is kind of important to give them back. It'd be like if you were raised with a talent that was obtained when you were young, and then as you honed it, it truly became yours. Even though there were too many expectations on them for those powers, doesn't mean that taking away those powers would have helped them. It'd be like taking away that talent that has become a part of you
@starlette78203 жыл бұрын
To me the reason they got their powers back is because their powers are metaphors for the roles each of them plays in the family. Luisa is the "strong" one, Isabela is the golden child, Camilo is the class clown/prankster, Pepa is the one who wears her heart on her sleeve etc etc. They lost their powers when rifts started to grow in the family from Abuela holding on too tight and putting so much pressure on all of them. That final argument between Mirabel and Abuela was what finally broke everything apart, the house crumbling and them losing their gifts and thus their roles in the family was symbolic of the family being "broken" apart. Thus in the same vain, getting their powers back once the house is rebuilt and the magic is returned is symbolic of their families healing and coming together to mend the cracks and rifts. This is just my interpretation though. :)

Madrigal is also a toponymic derived fom the spanish word _madriguera_ meaning burrow, as a native Spanish speaker it was the first thing I notice. A _madriguera_ is a place to hide from danger but also a place to live and grow, so much as a home. It's quite revealing. I do think Mirabel was chosen to match with miracle, also, Alma means soul and Peter comes from the Latin _petrus_ which means stone. I like to think that we're being told that he is the support of Alma and the firm foundation of the whole family.

In defense of Abuela…. Rewatch it at look at it from her point of view. She don’t know what others are going thru and push for the best even though it to much pressure on her grandchildren. She strives for the best for the community. She put them FIRST over the family but is that wrong for a Ruler to care about the people of the community first. Imagine being the matriarch of a family AND community. She treated maribel bad but she was trying to keep the magic/gift that her husband sacrificed (which she believed was the purpose and reason for the magic) alive. She would do anything to to keep the magic/hope/purpose/sacrifice alive for the fam and community. She wants/will fight anyone to keep Pedro name/sacrifice alive to keep the Gifts/candle. Miabel didn’t get a gift and she thought that would be the downfall of the happy community/life they built from trama. She thought the candle was his incarceration/omen for peace over the community. They were forced to leave their homes and was given a safe haven to grow the community for 3 generations. ----Columbia history shows this was the thousand day war. Where ppl/families/millions were killed and forced from their homes all in the name of power and control. Imagine what she Witness-- She didn’t want to loose it the magic she was gifted after ALL THE LOSS she experienced. She pushed/strived to make a better/stronger generation for her ppl. Yes she went about the wrong way, but you don’t know your wrong UNTIL YOU GET CALLED OUT. Mirabel called her out and she revalued her actions and changed. She Showed more love and appreciation and the community followed suit and came to help them at the end because they know Abuela/Miragels have their back when it comes to community. I always associated the miracle with the family bond and that once broken it coming back is a sign of the bond being rebuilt, similar to the 2 caterpillars and butterfly metaphor that shows up a lot
@bellmsky3 жыл бұрын
I personally think the “miracle” was “love for the family”. Pedro died for his, and Alma just wished to protect hers, that love made the miracle. And that’s also why the miracle died when the family’s broken. Mirabel holding the family back together got that repaired. I think the “waiting for a miracle” was so sad but upbeat at the same time, showed how Mirabel was miserable but tried her best to stay optimistic. Surface Pressure showed how Luisa’s struggle interwoven by the fear of not meeting expectation, the pure exhaustion and the desire but also the guilt of taking a break, through the lyrics and rhythm. We don’t talk about Bruno, the fact that they kept saying so while talking about him through the whole song was so much like real life gossiping. “Oh don’t tell anyone…”, “I really should not be telling but…” The fact that the Aunt was like “Bruno ruined our wedding!” While the Uncle was like “it’s a joyous day”, was just so funny how people could see the same thing so differently. And Isa’s part was soft and sweet because she needed to be so perfect and also she’s the only one with a good prophecy in the song. And the last part with everyone singing their own parts all together, was a great metaphor of how chaotic and messed up gossip could lead to. And after watching the whole movie, noticing that Dolores did hear Bruno the whole time, the only reason why she never brought that up, was probably because she was told by the whole family, or even the town, “not to talk about him no more”. This movie was a big metaphor of all kind of family issues. Kids who feel like they’re never good enough or tried too hard to achieve parents’ expectations; Family members who speak of bad things took the blame even with good intentions; The elders who thought they knew everything better. And how these would break a family. I just wish it could talk more about the cousins. They seemed to have just helped a little, and totally fine and with no secret struggle at all. And the desperation and pain in young Abuela Alma’s crying face was unbelievable. I still can’t help but to cry with her.

Multiple things I realize rewatching. Miracle never got her own room (wtf), did they even celebrate her birthday that night or after?, did anyone else see Bruno behind Delores in we don’t talk about Bruno and how Delores kind of guides mirabel to not see him

You mean Mirabel? As for the rest, I didn't noticed that too
@wickedwhisper45683 жыл бұрын
She continued to live in the nursery since she didn't get a room that night, which is why she's so close with her youngest cousin. As for Bruno wandering around, I'm guessing it was either actually Bruno, or just Camillo. Everyone probably assumed it was Camillo

The magic returning was more an example of fixing what was once broken, and new beginings. In the past, it was Abuelo/The Candle that gave the family their magic, their gift and unity was based on tragedy. In the present, their magic comes from Mirabel, who helped bring the family back together, and the rest of them who chose to become better, it was based on cooperation and love. Their efforts to be better people were rewarded upon their success, represented by Casita, the song suggested that rebuilding involed the changing of seasons, which means a good amount of time passed, so rather then just getting their powers back, they earned them and proved they deserved them, then Mirabel gave it back to them. There was no more candle, because they didn't need it anymore. Frankly, I just didn't like how it was all glossed over rather then shown, but then again, every five seconds probably cost them somewhere around a thousand dollars(Just a random guess, doesn't sound all that far from the truth to me) in animation and sound budget, and it was the ending so they couldn't just drag it out.

The miracle was already reborn - Mirabel is the miracle. It’s brought to life when she sees it in herself. The point of this wonderful film would be totally lost without it.

I like how you reacted all throughout the video. I also wouldn't know if it would be better if they didn't get the powers back but also liked how they got it back as it shown how Mirabel kind of was the one who re-constructed the house back. Plus, Bruno

Her gift was the encanto itself, just like abuela, you can see that they needed a candle for the encanto and abuela how always hold it, now they dont need it anymore, and mirabel was in the center and holding the candle now.

so I get that her door is meant to be the front door... kind of, because it has everyone on it.. but does that mean she still doesn't have her own room and is sleeping in the nursery? Even if she is meant to inherit the house from Abuela, Abuela still has her own room.

I gotta say, I really like your thumbnail with Bruno at the top in a green light and with that expression; that was the first impression most people would get from him due to how the characters won't talk about him as if they'd jinx it and the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and I was no different. I was interested in the "evil" depiction of him where he was represented as someone of misfortune and chaos, but I am indeed happy about the innocent and humble loving character we got in the real Bruno. Still intrigued about your "What if?" take on the thumbnail. :D If I hadn't known better, I'd believe that was from an official movie poster with Bruno as the black sheep of the family. Yes, I totally typed this much about a single thumbnail. XD
@HofTheStage2 жыл бұрын
That's actually Camilo Madrigal (the shapeshifter of the family) when he sings about Bruno and turns into his version of Bruno ;) Glad you enjoy the thumbnail!

All of the musical numbers is a part of Mirabel's gift, since she is the replacement of the candle in the family. The candle is the center of the family, but she becomes the center of the family at the end, which means she has all of the gifts of the house and the candle.
@elenmelon183 жыл бұрын
They got all of their powers back, because Mirabel is the candle made into flesh. She is the representation of Abuelo and Abuela, but she shows herself to be the most like her Abuelo, who is the Saint that has provided the Miracle.

If Mirabel had like any visual gifts in the end, it wouldn't have matched the main message of the movie. "You are perfect just the way you are. You don't need a gift to be special, cause in my eyes you all are already perfect."

It occurred to me while you were commenting "it's really interesting that it didn't have a Bad Guy" that it's actually not a good thing that we've all grown up EXPECTING A Bad Guy - it makes it really easy to target our anger/outrage at a specific evil dude/dudette that can take the blame for everything that's wrong. In reality, more often than not, there's no one, specific Bad Guy - though I suppose lots of individuals allowing their worse impulses (greed, jealousy, lust, etc.) to run rampant does a great job of standing in. It's just harder to put a stop to a many-headed hydra. So society shrugs and says, "that's just the way it is." I enjoyed this review, though the title made me expect a song review of a specific song instead of the entire movie. And I REALLY got a kick out of the recurring "Damn it, Disney," that you uttered all through it. :) They're really good at this, aren't they?

At 1st i didnt want them to get their powers back either but then I realized that they never really lost their powers to begin with. The power originally came from the love of family. Abuelo's sacrifice and Abuela's perseverance for the sake of her children is what originally gave them gifts. Throughout the movie it's hinted that the individual Madrigal's powers faded only when they felt detached from the family (mostly cuz of grandma). The 1st one being Bruno. The night Mirabel was supposed to get her gift, Abuela pressured Bruno into doing a vision. Afraid of disappointing his mother, Bruno ran away and never had another vision. I think the magic could see that Abuela was becoming toxic, so it decided to make Mirabel appear to be powerless as a lesson to Abuela about unconditional love. However, I think Mirabel had her powers all along. Her power was love. And since love doesn't require anything grand or special, no special room was needed because the love was shared throughout the entire home. But just how Luisa grew weaker as she felt pressured by Abuela to be strong, the less Mirabel felt love, the more the home crumbled. The more Mirabel felt love, the more the family healed. I think the movie was trying to show that love is magical and it doesn't die just cuz a candle goes out or because you don't live up to expectations. It's unconditional. And since the Madrigals derived their power from family love, all it took was Mirabel to bring them back together for them to find the strength once again.
