1) Thank you for taking a look at one of the most exciting metal singers of today. Courtney is definitely a force to be reckoned with. 2) More of her vocal ability can be seen in other one-take videos, although I would instead recommend checking out the band's live performance at Liquid Metal, it's more of a natural live habitat, and that's where Courtney really shines. 3) I'm glad you noticed the fact that in her screams she constantly flips between clean notes and distorted ones, which is an indication of her using the technique known as "false chord" screaming, something akin to what Chester Bennington of Linkin Park used for the most part - the scream itself is clean singing with a huge amount of distortion "on demand" under it - and getting control over it is what enables these flips (a good example of that is Linkin Park singing QWERTY at Summer Sonic 2007).

Beth, I just watched a video a couple days ago in which Courtney was describing how she started to do the harsh scream/growl vocals. She said that after she heard a band with similar vocals as a teenager, she just started to try to sing that way in the band she was in at the time with her brother, but the funny part was their sound system was so bad, she could hardly hear herself so she wasn't sure exactly what she sounded like and she only sang at band practices and gigs and did not practice at home. She did relate that her throat would hurt a little after doing the harsh vocals, which she initially thought was just part of that type of singing, but the discomfort went away when she learned better technique. She also said that she started to cup the microphone with two hands and her index fingers just above the rim of the mic which allowed her to hear her voice a little better and protected her teeth/mouth from trauma if someone bumped into her (which apparently happened more than once). In addition to the change in hand placement, she related that she got into the habit of positioning her arms directly in front of her to protect her from guys trying to grab her boobs, which also apparently happened more than once (as a male, I can confirm that guys are pigs, but that crosses way over the line!)

Courtney is an amazing vocalist and also a very active voice for women in metal. She's been doing a podcast, "Good for a Girl," where she interviews women both in bands and in the label/management side of metal. Super down to earth. so with her screams. They are indeed a Mix, The Base of her screams are Pitched Fry which utilizes some voice, but as she's pushing with a strong diaphragm, and projecting her voice with alot of airflow, naturally some of her Falsecords also begin to rattle around from the Compression added and power behind it which add another layer of distortion and thicker tonality. So it's a mix of Fry and Falsecord. I'm a metal vocalist myself and tend to do the same techniques. I have a few vocal covers on my channel which utilize pretty much the same techniques to varying degrees.
