Geoff Tate is 62 now, and did smoke for a time (!), but still sounds good. In his prime no one could touch him! The whole band are incredible songwriters and musicians! Listen to the 1992 MTV Unplugged for raw talent. Especially "The Killing Words". They are so diverse in what they can write. I've met them and seen them live numerous times, and their live shows were AMAZING! Thank you for your thoughts and analysis! Love to hear the technical breakdown!

@@markleblanc131 Bruce can what? Not sure exactly what you're referring to. Bruce is a pretty good singer, but I like Geoff's clarity, pitch, tone, phrasing, emotion, and power more than anyone else I've ever heard, even though there are many good singers out there. It's very subjective. It's personal taste. I get a little passionate about Geoff/ QR, but I don't mean to discount other really good singers. It's just that Geoff does it for ME as a singer/songwriter, and QR does it for ME as a band. IMHO.

I love this band. They're still one of my favorites. And I listen to all genres of music. From Tibetan monks, to Cattle Decapitation, to Dave Brubeck, to John Lee Hooker, to Bill Monroe, I listen to it all. Queensryche, once of my top 10 most favorite bands, regardless of genre, of all time. Between Chris DeGarmo, and Geoff Tate, this band was destined to be big. Chris not only has got a register that is almost equaled Geoff's, and harmonizes so beautifully, he's got a playing style, that as soon as you hear a riff, you're like, "Oh, that's DeGarmo". What a lot of people don't know, and it really surprises me that they don't, is that Geoff was operatically trained. If I'm not mistaken, he was going to follow in the footsteps of Pavarotti, as a Tenor. But then he fell in love with the late 1970s, and early 1980s, emerging heavy metal scene. Bands like Angel Witch, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden, where their singers have a big range. Queensrÿche is from Seattle. And Seattle has been, and continues to be, a rich environment for song writers, that have have a story to tell. And they have had stories to tell. Operation: Mindcrime is basically a rock opera, that tells a story from start to finish. If you have not listened to it, I highly recommend that you do.

I've never seen you before. But you obviously have a trained voice. Geoff Tate is a highly trained Baritone. One of the best of all time. In rock, second to none. Rob Halford is a Tenor, although he has the ability to go lower. I need to see more of you're analysis. This, in my opinion, is best LIVE performances ever. Keep in mind, this was the7th song played at that venue, so Geoff was already somewhat winded. But the training gave him the ability to not let it show. As I said, he is HIGHLY CLASSICALLY TRAINED. as are you, I heard you. That was decent.

He is most definitely still alive and performing with his own band. I haven’t seen him live since his QR days but have seen hundreds of his videos on KZbin. IMO, not being negative and keeping in mind I’m still a big fan of him, he is not in the same ballpark today as a singer as he was in this video due to age and life choices. He modifies the range that he sings his older catalog of music or let’s the backup singers sing the higher range parts and often has trouble extending the duration of his notes. He still has great clarity and vibrato in his chest voice but can get choppy with it if he pushes to hard. Given his age and the limitations that can bring, he is still enjoyable to watch as he is still a great showman. He was already starting to lose his higher range prior to the messy breakup with QR and it reflects that if you listen to each progressive QR album prior to them removing him from the band. He still sounds pretty good on some of the lower range QR songs but some of the QR songs are unobtainable to him as they were originally sang. This isn’t a hot take as even Geoff has admitted the fact that he doesn’t have the range or power he once had and he accepts that and soldiers on because he still enjoys performing.

Unfortunately time has been unkind to Geoff's voice. Even in the early 90's he started leaving the E5 out of this song. What's beautiful about this vocal performance is his total freedom of expression and effortless uninhibited performance ability to sing through three octaves here. I have watched recent videos of him and its obvious he is inhibited in his performances because he can no longer sing in the low register and has to use too much air to hit the same notes so he cannot sustain the notes anymore. Time is cruel to any elite athlete or performer. But just wow, what an amazing vocalist in his prime. Untouchable talent and natural tone.

Agreed, Geoff's flame burned so bright but burnt out very fast as a consequence. Curious to hear what you think of the legendary Glenn Hughes. He's one of the few who has escaped the curse of aging to me, and still sounds just as good as he did in the 70's if not better.

Thank you for the honesty Frank, in a room full of deaf fandom. This is my music, my era - I was 21 when this was released. To watch Geoff today is painful. You have to understand what Geoff was doing back then, and it wasn't what HE wanted to do. His huge influence was Peter Gabriel, and he liked stage performance (similar to David Lee Roth and the vaudeville stuff), but he preferred the alternative music that went with Peter Gabriel. Metal was NOT Geoff Tate, but the band Queensryche was an established metal songwriting team, and he had to sing and pretend to be metal. When you watch Geoff today, you see the Gabriel come out - and now Geoff is an 'entertainer', no longer a metal lead vocalist. He's not a songwriter on the level of DeGarmo (and neither was Wilton), so QR would never see or taste any successes near where they were with Empire and Promised Land. That he can no longer hit these high notes is not surprising. The sad part is that he now sings QR songs as an 'entertainer'. It's perhaps interesting, quite possibly entertaining - but I can't take more than a minute or two of any particular song before I move on. Don't even get me started on Michael trying to play DeGarmo's leads after he left.

I noticed now that Geoff Tate plays the old queensryche songs in a lower key and he definitely doesn't hit the high notes anymore. But the guy who replaced him in Queensryche, some 10 years ago, still hits all those notes without lowering the key. But the main thing is that no one will ever be able to copy the tone, sound and expression of Geoff's voice. I got to see queensryche playing in a bar on the north side of Pittsburgh right after the warning came out. Till this day that was still one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Quite frankly, I don't know very many singers who are to maintain their registers some 40 years later. Although, Steven Tyler does still seem to bang it out. I also discovered that after Chris DeGarmo left the band, that he was the main songwriter. They were never the same after him leaving. At least the Queensryche of the mid 80s and early '90s are alive and well on video and audio.

They used to do shows more than 2 hrs long and he never misses a note even after hour 2! He still is preforming right now. Not quite the same as this but still sounds good.

Unfortunately Jeff is no longer with the band but he is still singing and still sounds awesome. I grew up with queenreich and now he brings tears too my eyes. Such an amazing voice, listen too more of the early songs he will blow you away.

Geoff Tate grew up less than a mile from where I did though he was quite a bit older. I always heard his younger sister used to sell his early records from their backyard but don't know for sure if that's true.
