It's a somewhat easy technique to get started with imo (Sub Harmonics), but a difficult one to master. Geoff is just really good at it and has also learned to blend it into his other registers so it sounds seemless, like he's using chest for everything. I've gone down to E1 using this, but it's shaky and hard to get volume and consistency.

Voiceplay as a whole are extremely talented and criminally underrated. They should be getting the same recognition as PTX. Their biggest plus side is letting their bass actually have solos. Not sure if you ever noticed but Eli (the bald guy) does the base notes during Moana Medley and also a lot of other songs when Geoff is singing his parts...everybody keeps thinking they are using a second track of Geoff singing and doing the base lines together but he isn't. Eli and all of the singers perform multiple roles when needed.

Fun fact: If you watch Geoff's video on how to sing low, you learn that he doesn't see himself as a bass. According to him he's a baryton by nature, as that range is more comfortable for him! Voice play were in the Sing off the same season as Home Free. If you dig up their performances from that, you'll see a very young Geoff being totally overshadowed by the rest of the band (in fact, Home free comments at one point that "Tim is the only one singing that low in this competition"). If you dare take a peek down a very deep acapella rabbit hole, go watch that entire season. Pentatonix might still be more famous, but Home Free had to beat some amazing raw talent to get their fame! Obviously they won, but they very much did so on experience, which is saying a LOT given the talent they have among them!

@@droid8472 true, but I think there's a difference between hitting a note and actually singing it, anyone can make a G0 with fry, whereas making it actually sound like a full note is obviously much harder. Geoff does a great job with this E1 as its obviously very full and resonant. Tim's A0 growl might not be considered "singing" to others too, but it's certainly impressive

@@ChaS4m For me it works best, when I sing an “ohhhhh“ on a D2 or C2 and then I just relax and become quiter on the D2 or C2. Don't forget to open your mouth like an “O“ while singing the “ohhhhh“. After this, the D1 or C1 pops out and I am trying to hold it. You have to find which note works the best for you. For me it works the best on a low C and low D.

They are not double tracking, one or two of the others can do the bass notes as well, although they mostly stick to tenor. In this case, I believe it was J. None doing the bass while Geoff sang. Layne (the beat boxer) can do some really good bass notes and can also end them with a drum sound too. He does it with the "boom shtk" that you hear in the background while Geoff is singing "you're joking". you also missed Geoff doing a 6 note riff as Layne steps back after speaking the line "to add a little spice", that riff sounded so much like it was synthesised but you can see Geoff doing it in the background. Lip reading, it seems like he is saying "doobedy doobedy".

From the lowest I've heard him do at B0 up to over a c4, though not as sure just how high he can hit without going completely falsetta. So many good things to hear in this song if you pay attention, from the synchopated rhythms including being on the backbeat or during the 2nd Santa part, that vocal appregio. Then of course the E1 sub at the end.. so much to cover. I'm impressed they do this song so well live too

I finally... FINALLY figured out how to hit that note at the end. AS RECORDED! It took sooo long to figure out how he was doing that if it wasn't dubbed in mixing. So,for those who are wondering how..... Okay... So he made a video about how and Tim Faust showing him the growl technique. It's either on Geoff's or Voice Play's YT channel. Can't remember which. So then I figured out why my note was there but the deepness was weak or missing, even with a microphone. Gotta fiddle and practice quite a bit to get it so why not walk around growling all day!? Ya won't look crazy at all!... but yea, it's like a combo of vocal fry further forward (up) in the throat, chin down, lips barely apart... along with exhaling the corresponding chest note (causing the subharmonic. Slow the exhale enough to get a "crackle" and it becomes a growl of sorts. So we now have a subharmonic growl... technically vocal fry, chest note, and growl in one tone. I'm not a vocal coach. I don't perform. I can't even read music. I'm just musically inclined and naturally good at figuring stuff out. ADD helps so much sometimes! 😁

I've been watching his tips of singing lower and I fall in the full tenor and high baritone or bass ranges so it's easier for me

Hi, Beth! I would like to see/hear your reaction to The Carpenters' "Superstar" Live. Karen left this world much too early, unfortunately, but one of a legacy of voice and many other talents. So, if you could, please do and thank you oh so much!

Please react to my shower singing. I like grunge which is almost always out of my upper register. When singing along with the original artist I sound really good. When I attempt to sing the same song without the backing vocals the wheels fall off the cart. It’s either the acoustics or an utter lack of talent. Yeah, know which one it is.
