This video is from Aug 2018. In the days after Aretha passed there were many big name singers out there doing the big belty renditions of Aretha's songs. Angelina went a different route... She sat down with mourning in her voice and sorrow in her eyes, and gave this heartfelt, peaceful, respectful tribute. This is a person who's whole life has been music, paying respect to a fallen legend.... and she even fades out and leaves an intentional moment of silence at the end of the video. It is genius stuff..... from a 12 year old. When you watch this again knowing the circumstances, take note of how sad her eyes look here. BTW: if you like this intimate settings with that Neumann mic, there are lots more on her cover channel. That mic pics up every detail!

A couple points: like other Angelina songs, I heard and understood every word of the lyrics for the first time for this song. Also, as you said, it was refreshing to hear this like it’s new again, even though, like everyone else, I loved Aretha’s version. It’s classic Angelina. She grabs you at the first note-you’re hooked-and her pared back delivery makes you lean in, mentally, to hear every line. Also classic Angelina: she’s just a kid and handles adult lyrics and feelings beautifully. She must be a lyricist’s dream because she gives meaning and life to the words. And finally, where other singers probably would feel the need to work up to a crescendo to demonstrate their range or power, Angelina gives you sincerity and emotion. There is no other singer, past or present, that I would rather listen to.

As a tribute to Aretha, who had passed a few days earlier, she chose to fade to black at the end; quite different from her usual big smile and wave goodbye. Very classy and very mature. I have never been a fan of this song, especially the Aretha version; I like Carol King's better. But Angelina's version has won me over. So subtle, so soft; and the low register chorus was super. I loved it! I know you like it when she transforms a song into something new; makes it her own. And so do I. My favorite performance by Angelina is "California Dreamin'". Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3OsaH6jaN9qY7c What she has done with this classic pop song is Magic! Slowed it way down; changed a few notes; acoustic guitar only, and gave it a bluesie, jazz vibe; and Voila! A brand new song. A MASTERPIECE!! Hope you will react to it. Angelina has just signed with Republic Records; one of the very best companies in the music business (Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Stevie Wonder, Amy Winehouse, Jonas Bros, Drake, and many, many more). So I imagine these intimate little postings are a thing of the past. She was close to completing her latest album (all originals) when the pandemic hit and brought everything to a halt. I'm confident that Republic with help her create the best possible recording, and they will promote and market it like only a big successful company can. Don't know what that means, by I'm excited to find out. Thanks for your always thoughtful and professional reaction to Angelina. Best wishes. 😊💕

She is so completely confident and self-assured with how little she is doing, and I love that about her. This one performance teaches you a lot. It's OK to go down an octave, it's OK to take your time, it's OK to play with the timing and sing phrases at different times from the original, say them in different ways to give them different meanings. Fascinating.

Yes this is very much how I feel. She's capable of the vocal gymnastics, but even at AGT, which is a venue that demands that, she picked just a couple of moments. And even from an early age her timing has been amazing. She never rushes, which so many young performers do. Some months ago I saw a comment about what model of microphone she's using, but it's escaped my memory. Anyway, it's amazing. She's singing very softly, but that mike picks up absolutely everything. If someone knows please tell me.

Some of my very favorite performances are with AJ and Ivan on guitar, and they are using this mike: "Stay"; "A Million Years Ago"; and my all time favorite, "California Dreamin'". Love your sincere enthusiasm. You have a great knack for hitting me with freshness. While this performance was not new to me.....it is now. When she whispers out those delicate phrases it is exactly sublime. THX

Thanks for your reaction, Christi. Very insightful as usual. The thing that's quite different with Angelina is that she's so genuine, no gimmicks, no tricks. She just listens to a song in her head and makes the arrangements she feels it suits her voice and artistic choices. Like an "Angelina filter", hahaha That's why her take on different songs and genres is so unique, IMO.

From every thing I have read from those in the know is that Angelina has always chosen the songs and does her own arranging without the parents making the choices. Of all the praises given Angelina, all deserved, I haven’t seen anyone mention her amazing ability to memorize music. Unless she has a teleprompter (which you can see with your eyes closed), I’ve never seen her reading music in her covers!
@mrpeppery4 жыл бұрын
There are several covers where she is reading or at least occasionally referring to the lyrics, but that’s more a testament to her ability to perform a song beautifully before having time to learn the lyrics. She does it in “Back to Black”, of course, but in that case she literally re-wrote the entire song, apparently prior to the recording. And there are also many many songs that she has learned, word for word, by heart.
@alanoakley32424 жыл бұрын
She is often reading the lyrics, which sometimes leads to timing, cadence and pronunciation issues. So for me her amazing ability is that she pulls out these performances while not knowing the songs particularly well or, it seems, rehearsing them very much. Nor is she too precious to upload an imperfect rendition. There are certain mistakes that a singer knows about as and when he or she makes them but Angelina refuses to be put off her stride, even live in front of thousands. She has every opportunity to redo a video in which she, for example, sustains a vowel too long but she is too genuine for that. I'm reserving judgement about her rumoured recording contract but woe betide the producer who messes with her authenticity.

So glad to hear another reaction from you about her. This is her tribute not long after Aretha died. I thinks that's one reason it's so quiet. You'll notice she is consulting the lyrics every once in a while. She often does that. But somehow she completely inhabits the song. She's never afraid to be slow, to be quiet. Negative space. It's not quite right to say she sings for herself, but she sure does sing right out of herself. Her tribute to her friend, poor Avicii, a slowed version of his Wake Me Up is very moving. As is her tribute to her grandfather, Always on My Mind. Lately I have been listening to her version of Happier.

Not only is she sitting down but if you watch closely she's playing the piano. I think you'd love her performance of wicked game.

The way Angelina makes every song her own is fascinating, its a cliche yes but she actually does. Consider watching her version of California Dreaming by the Mamas and Papas, simply mind blowing

This is the second song she sung while reading the lyric ...and both produced this very very impresive soulull performance .... That ain't easy at all...

Great reaction to the bare foot princess. I wish you could make reactions to her a bit more frequently.

Great reaction! Been following her for over a year now. If I had to describe Angie in one word, I would have to say, fearless. She is not afraid to try different styles and put herself out their for all to see when she is doing it. Because of this, she is one of the most versatile singers I have ever heard. Look at Adele, Celine, Rihanna and even Kelly Clarkson. They are all great artist, arguable some of the best. They also only have one distinct style. You can go back to some of the greats, like Billy Holiday, Etta James, Karen Carpenter. They all had one style. Not Angie. I can't wait for her to put out her own material. I'm anxious to see just how many different styles and techniques she uses. Another artist that switches things around a lot is our beautiful Shamanka Diana. She just release an original song "Into The Sky". Official Video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpevoqZtn695q6s

A comment on the dimensionality Angelina makes in her songs in particular. This song was a tribute to the recently deceased Aretha Franklin for her seriousness, black dress, and an anguished voice almost to shed a goodbye tear. Generally, listeners do not understand that this teenager is much more than a singer, she is a master of the song, her observation of music goes beyond the senses of a standard professional musician. Thanks for the reaction

Theres a great many jazz/pop-singers in Norway., historically. Silje Neergaard, Live Maria Roggen is still on the road. Besides, Id recommend Ruphus "Coloured Dreams", voc, Gudny Aspaas. Or any of the Katzenjammer band. Great musicians.

Your socks will get knocked off by her version of "Born to Die". I'm serious! Even if you don't "react" to it, you've got to hear it.
