Nina Simone doesn't seem to try hard to impress here vocally, but she impressed me tremendously. The story she wants to tell comes first, the singing flows from that.
In this reaction video I look at a live performance and song I didn't know yet: Brown baby, performed by her in 1965 in The Netherlands.
Here is the original KZbin video with the full concert: • Video

Nina Simone breaks my heart with her singing. I watched some early Neil Young yesterday, he he does the same thing, though not as heavily as Simone. I'm thinking of "Mississippi Goddam", and her sadness and outrage is so real. Add that to her showmanship, unique raw talent, and no wonder she's top shelf.

Her rendition of strange fruit is one of my favorite compared to others. Don't get me wrong the others are great, Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald are bout amazingly talented women. But Nina has a deep ancestral tone to tells the pains and suffering of my people. She forces the audience to feel the tragedies of the world she knowns. Sinner Man is a prophecy yet to unfold. She's a soul to be reckoned with for sure. Thank you for sharing. She one of my families favorites and I'm talking grand parents kind of love. Awesome video. Live theyway you go into the technical use of her voice. First channel I've comes across that actually focuses on it in depth. True music lover indeed. Blissings upon you💖💖💖💖

I wonder what your reaction would be to Sarah Vaughan. It was said that she should have been an opera singer but chose jazz instead. A good choice for your reaction would be her live version of 'Misty', recorded in Stockholm in 1964. Despite having a cold, her vocal, to me, is divine!! With her renowned wide vocal range, there must be a lot of interesting technique for you to analyse in this performance.

@@martinsinfield42 Sarah Vaughan was an excellent jazz singer and I love her a lot. My comment is not against her! But it happens that songs like Ain't misbehaving were played a lot in the strip-tease bars. The best music for pole dancing. "Like Jack Horner, in the corner..." Well, her voice is pure sex!

@@martinsinfield42 I also recommend Dinah Washington for a good music experience (and strip-tease LOL). Nina Simone is not my style. Too sad, too rough.

@martinsinfield42 5 жыл бұрын
@@jurivlk5433 The 'Big Four' were Dinah Washington (renowned for her very clear enunciation), Billie Holiday (before her addictions affected her voice), Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. With her 4 octave range and wide repertoire, it's a shame that you only associate SV with strip-tease music. Her amazing legacy is more deserving than that, surely?

Already mentioned: Ella Fitzgerald. She recorded "Spring can really hang you up the most" several times. Generally, a good singer doing a good job. On the Jazz at the Philharmonics Santa Monica recording, she does the matching "voice acting". Nice to compare versions. On the same recording, in the final jam, "C jam blues" she improvs opposite each of the brass/woodwind players as in a "tenor battle" where two musicians have battle-duet.
