You are kiddin ? Today every Band has an opera like singr there are hundreds out there,. I was a big fan of lacuna coil ( i am still ) and Nightwish with tarja and Anette, But since then... bah, i cant hear this opera singers anymore they all sound equal. And Alissa ghusen whatever... she was nice with her Band the Agonyst,,,, but since she changed to Goosens Band to replace her all is going down the hill. She is not goosen and you can hear it and she also brought her Music style into the band and it changed a lot. I dont know... for me Female Metal singers get enough credit today. The times where people said Metal singers have to be man is long time gone. But at the same time the Music got tqualized and everythihng sounds nearly the same.

@serendipidus1 i think symphonic metal bands generally sound very similar to each other. for singing thats because of the more traditional singing style. but i also find the instrumentation becomes boring really quickly.

It's true ... especially from Amy Lee I wouldn't have expected it, Evanescence leans far too much into that pop studio sound to believe it's real. But she's actually amazing just like the others.
Felix, Amy is most definitely “real” and to call her “pop” is simply misconstruing her ability to make melodic heavy songs that resonate with a large audience. While she deserves a seat at the table here, Amy has never expressly said she is a metal artist, and she creates her own sonic mélange of different genres. Amy is, in fact, at her best when it is just her voice and a piano. Unlike many vocalists on this list, Amy is the primary songwriter of ALL of her music and a classically trained pianist and not just a singer.

"healthy" harsh vocals produce distortion through fry or false chords (then there's inhale, which _may_ be dangerous, even if it doesn't cause pain). proper warmup and breathing are important no matter what. if someone's running out of breath a lot or loses their voice halfway through the set, it's probably bad technique.

That's because people who like metal are usually interested in the music itself and the musicians rather than just one person or trying to fit in by liking whatever's popular and they won't tolerate any sort of fakery. Whether it's autotune or not writing your own music metal listeners will not put up with that but people who listen to popular rap and pop generally don't care about those things, if anything it seems to have become the norm now.

That depends heavy on the live mix when the soundguy fuck it up it will sound worse and it depends on where you play the modern halls for concerts are very difficult for the soundguys. Cause its most of the time just blacnk concrete and no more wood or sound absorbing materials.

Alissa White-Gluz can switch between clean singing and screaming back and forth, she just doesn't get a chance to do so now that she's in Arch Enemy. Look up her previous band Agonist where she uses both clean vocals and screams. Panophobia is a really good song. Oh and if you haven't heard already, Tatiana Shmaylyuk of Jinjer is a prime example of a vocalist doing both cleans and screams amazingly well. I always felt like on live shows she seemed a little out of place due to her clothing style and stage presence that back in the day did not fit into the ethereal image they created for Tarja and neither into what a heavy metal vocalist usually dresses and acts on stage, so she probably didn't always fit on a visual side, but when it comes to what really matters which is the MUSIC then she was actually a smart addition to the band since her contemporary singing style and brighter tone allowed the band to explore different stuff on their songwriting. I love Tarja but I don't think she would do any justice to songs like Slow Love Slow, Scaretale or Floor's Tribal and Yours is an Empty Hope.

I only took voice for one semester, but I feel like a large part of "learning to sing" is about embracing what makes your voice special and then picking the right songs to flatter your unique instrument. Amy Winehouse and Adele wouldn't have gotten anywhere if they had spent their whole lives wishing they sounded like Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey wouldn't have gotten anywhere if she beat herself up for not sounding like Aretha Franklin. You are special, your voice is special, and it's only going to get better as you practice.

Indeed. I really believe that this is one of the greatest recordings ever made. The song itself is very emotional and melodic already. And then Jansen adds her supreme voice and makes it just stellar. The build up to the outstanding final note is just fantastic. What a supreme singer she is. And her versatility is currently unmatched. The amazing thing is also, that her sister Irene is a proficient, yet inactive, singer as well. How fucking awesome it has to feel to be on that stage, after a 18 year long hard working career, perfecting your voice everyday, and SLAY this song like she did. What a moment of satisfaction, confidence and fulfilment.

As someone who enjoys both it is great to see the difference :) If you wanted to look into Nightwish a little bit more I would highly recommend looking at: Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (Wacken). We nightwish fans go crazy for Floor Jansen and the way she sings the song :) Plus Alissa White-Gluz actually does sing clean vocals as well! If you want to hear more of that look for 'The Antagonist' because that's the other band in which she does vocals!

Agonist will give you a good live impression. Panaphobia's a favorite. I think her best singing comes in the the duo with Kamelot in "Liar Liar." It gives a great impression of how she can do both. Then Pisces by Jinjer is a fantastic version too of a woman who excels at both cleans and growls.

Try listening to Phantom Of The Opera, studio and live End of an Era concert version. As for Floor, the song Energize Me with her previous band is awesome as well.
@bradseaver54976 жыл бұрын
YES! I agree. Tarja Turunen was the original singer and it's ridiculous that people on here are saying Floor's version is better or great but it's just not. Nightwish, I'll give it to them they improved when they went from Anette Olzon to Floor Jansen in terms of singers but they held Floor back a lot on the album they last released. However when they went from Tarja Turunen to Anette Olzon I don't know where they found her or why they picked her but it's like they went from Celine Dion to Kelly Clarkson. Don't get me wrong Anette Olzon sounds great in her new band "The Dark Element" but she just didn't in Nightwish. I just love Tarja so much!

I've never heard of Tarja Turunen or Nightwish until now, and I'm trying to find the full videos for this song. What song is it?
@dcpunk46 жыл бұрын
@GeekRedux The one in this video is Nemo. For shits and giggles, there's also a video of both Tarja and Floor singing Over the hills together here on yt. I will always like Anette. I did start listening to Nightwish when Tarja was still a part of them, but got into them with Dark Passion Play. Then again interests changed and I stopped listening to Nightwish so much. I had a recent binging of their videos just for nostalgia and started listening to stuff with Floor in it. I wish the end of the Ghost Love Score performance at Wacken 2013 was shown in this EvR video. Holy shit does she kill it there. They're all good and have their own unique style. The drama over who is 'better' is dumb and useless.
@lgmhorus6 жыл бұрын
Annette was a great singer, sadly in the wrong place in the wrong time. I love her albums with Nightwish, and she does sound really good live in her own songs. But she doesn't sound as good in Tarja's era songs, and it's not even her fault, her vocal styles are completely different. It's very similar to what happened with Blaze on his time on Iron Maiden, and in both cases the way the fans reacted was pretty poor.

Gotta love this video! You apparently didn't know most of the singers and yet came up with very smart and accurate observations. You said the transition between head and chest voice at Tarja's singing could be little smoother... Apparently she didn't use to let her chest voice come in at her lower notes at that time (2000s) and that's something she has been recently working on and sounds way better to me. Then you said about Floor Jansen sounding a little tired and as far as I know she was about to be diagnosed with burnout at the video you have reacted. I also love that fact Anette has been whom you praised most and we cannot forget how much hatred she got from part of Nightwish' fans when she replaced Tarja. And finally you apparently loved Sharon den Adel and I always heard she didn't use to have vocal trainings at that time.

Suely Almeida , yeah i was also quite dissapointed from the songs of the Nightwish album with Floor. I just want stuff more like "Cry with a smile" and "Energize me" from After Forever where she can show her full power. And Tuomas just gives her songs that every other decent singer could perform, as if he already expect her to leave.
