Gar- jewl' la. VoicePlay uses a studio, Pattycake Productions in this mall. Layne is co-owner with Tony Wakim who used to be a baritone in the group. He decided he really wanted to get into the production end. They had a person who was supposed to let them into the abandoned store in the same mall but was either late or forgot the day. They wound up finding another way in. So they did have permission. A lot of the shops in the mall have now been replaced with offices and studios of some sort. Starting about 3 yrs ago, they began the post-apocalyptic trilogy with Warriors (Imagine Dragons) (abandoned building), Dream On (Aerosmith) (Eli's old high school now defunct), Seven Nation Army (White Stripes) (mall). Anthony is also in Creep, Golden Hour, Just Sing. VoicePlay and Home Free collaborated in Survivor: Zombies vs Hillbillies which is a hoot!

Actually this video was filmed in an abandoned department store in the same mall almost nextdoor to Pattycake. Their shorts videos are filmed in various places in the mall. Oviedo Mall in Orlando Florida.

Layne's production studio, PattyCake Productions, is in in the mall. The place where they are here is a department store that left. Yes, they had permission to film there, and probably paid for the privilege. They've been doing a bunch of warrior/apocalypse stuff - it started w/ Warriors 3 years ago and includes gaming themes and a bunch of rock stuff that simply fits their vision for a particular song. They used to be so clean cut and Disney-fied that seeing them a little smudged and dirty was pretty appealing. As for better beatbox, you need to define what it is that you want from a beatbox. Layne can do excellent drum sounds, but seems to specialize in strange organic sounds that, while they are very much part of the percussion world, aren't drums and are often one-off sounds for a specific impact. In general, that applies to their entire approach. VP blends from one genre to another without a blush. The three big a cappella groups are each very different, each very professional and excellent at what they do. My preference is VoicePlay all the way - really can't listen to Pentatonix, to me they sound beautiful but lifeless somehow. My ear always knows exactly what they're going to do before they do it, so they just bore me. But that's me, and their predictability is EXACTLY what some people I've talked to love about them. They are the most commercially successful. VP thinks of each video as an art piece, and it shows.

As far as I know, the only video featuring two of the three big a cappella groups is "Survivor - Zombies vs Hillbillies", which are... Voiceplay vs Home Free. But don't expect a competition, it's a hilarious video, they prepared that thing in case they were to compete in a "in-or-out" challenge in "Sing Off!" (they were both in the 4th season, and are good friends ever since), and as it never happened they decided to do it in the form of a video. But they performed it live in the "Sing Off Tour", there should be a video of that. 🙂 Also, they collaborated in other ways: Tim taught some growl techniques to Geoff, Rob is featured in at least one Voiceplay videos, and Tim appears at the very least in "Voicelay's "Just sing!" video, with a fun (for me) interaction with Geoff and... the captions😁. And Geoff arranged Home Free version of "Elvira", the one with the original performers of the song (sorry, I don't remember the name of the other group).

Ooh I know that song. I think multiple artists have sung it but the one I remember is the Oak Ridge Boys from some TV special years ago.

@@carinarodebak9419Thank you! I didn't remember that. 🙂 You know the meme... "Symptoms of aging are three. The first one is loss of memory. I can't remember the other two..." 😉 Anyway, the fact that they are friends and have collaborations and respect each other a lot is beautiful, for me. It's not as much a rivalry as many fans try to make it, that's just in the heads of the fans. 🙂

VoicePlay put out their second what they're calling loops, where they all contribute to a short arrangement. In it, the final product has a bass at the end that sounds synthesized, but then the video ends with Geoff singing the isolated part into a mic and the only real difference is that it was far quieter. They all can make amazing sounds with their voices so it's hard to tell how filtered the sounds are and how much are just sounds they know how to make.

In the BTS video… They weren’t technically supposed to be there. Layne was worried they’d get arrested but Geoff said he wasn’t all that worried about it. They just tried to be “quick” about it, 😂. Not sure if it was the same mall pattycake is in or not.. I don’t think they said. The only sound I think was not made in this video was the pipe sound in the beginning and the gun sound. I think everything else was a voice.
@AceofBadeReacts Жыл бұрын
Ooh I see. Well at least they didn't get caught.
@thisismetoday7423 Жыл бұрын
From my understanding every sound you hear is made by them but they do sometimes add effects to it in production so that’s why some sounds may not sound human. On occasion they will add a sound that isn’t a voice but they make it obvious. In this one I think the gun sound was the only one not made by them but knowing Layne he could have done it 😅 I think Zombies vs Hillbillies is the only one that has 2 of the groups, I don’t think the 3 have done anything. It would be fantastic but honestly don’t think PTX would be game 🤷🏻♀️

To sounds in this video, not made by voice, the obvious one is the sound of the metal bat being dragged on the floor as Eli enters the scene. As for all those 'electronic' sounds in this, check out some of their minis - especially the 'Streaming Services' one. It is absolutely unreal how well they can impersonate a synth! And it is something I'm pretty sure they have been doing for awhile. I believe there are 'synth' sounds in "ACrimpella" which is at least 7 years ago (possibly longer?). Of course, I could be misremembering that, but I'm pretty sure I was shocked to realize it on someone's reaction to that, after having heard this cover.

I think the gun sound was real but the bat dragging was an actual bat dragging. Cesar is also talented with instrumental noises

Avi Kaplan from PTX was featured in at least one of the Home Free videos and Kirstin Maldanado, also PTX, in a Voctave video. I can see Avi with Home Free because similar styles. Kirstin with Voctave, because she should be a Disney Princess. PTX has collaborated a lot with other artists and videos, some collaboratively and others individually. For a short while Scott and Mitch also did work together as SuperFruit and they have an epic cover of Rise with Brian Justin Crum, Mario Jose and Mary Lambert.

Yes, Anthony's name is pronounced as Garjoola. In Italian the GI sounds more like a J. So confusing when letters have more than one sound. :) Yes it was an abandoned mall, and as I understand it, they just walked in and hoped for the best. Layne said it would be fine. And thankfully it was. They filmed Dream On in an abandoned school, I don't know it they got permission for that one. Anthony appears with them in Creep, and Golden Hour. Both are brilliant. He has an incredible voice. Regarding Adam and Layne and beatboxing they are roughly equal, they just use a different style. Adam's drums are more accurate to real drums, Layne's (I"m told) sound more like electronic drum sounds. But don't quote me on that. They are both brilliant anyway.
