My wife and I used to live on a lake in Michigan and our neighbor's son visited him and he brought a small catamaran called a Hobie Cat. Lucky me, he asked if I would like to go for a sail and I jumped at the opportunity. I will never forget how exhilarating it was when the wind grabbed it and the acceleration was incredible. I mean it just absolutely lurched forward like a race car - I mean right now. I didn't know it could do that. I was always into fishing - that sure was neat.

Sold my 26 foot Nash 6 foot head room, 2 cyl diesel inboard engine etc couple years ago, bought it new 31 years ago lol.. yes watching your demonstration brought back lots of memories. Now we can get out on the water again via radio control nice.. The design looks like it will dig in and heel over nicely and probably be able to sail at a fair clip. Be interesting to see what the range is on the water, and another thought would be sailing it fpv wow, that would be just like sailing for real possibly. Something to try I suppose. lol Looking forward to your upcoming videos. Happy Sailing !! lol

When I was a lad we lived near Lake Lefroy, a large salt lake, perfect for land sailing. I was a member of the land sailing club there which basically had two types of land yacht, all steel pipe fun yachts and much faster streamlined racing yachts as well as a permanent clubhouse. The fastest yachts would easily reach 100 KPH. Being such a large area all of the Yachts were much bigger than the typical beach types of today. All the yachts were self built and designed. Nothing like the consumer Blowkart existed back then. My brother still races Blowkarts south of Perth, he is the Australian distributor for them in fact.

I am planning on making a Spinnaker for mine. I noticed you can buy that type of fabric at most fabric shops. As I have inly sailed a sunfish type sailboat, This would still be fun. I know my local lake offers small sailboat classes but at 60 I don't care to take that up. My friend tried to get me out on his sailboat. As he is blind, I would end up doing all the work and he would just bark out commands, thats not fun. I think my Grandson will enjoy helping me sail it, no barking on my boat allowed!

Very keen to see what you think of this thing in the water, do you think it is a good starter sailboat for someone experienced with cars and small planes?
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 5 жыл бұрын
It is a good starter, it sails nicely and the components are good. But mine leaked a little so I added extra water proofing (silicon sealant) around all the attachment points. I also changed to a decent receiver and radio.Better yachts are a lot more expensive.

Perfect configuration. With your permission, allow me to write down three details that could improve the configuration of this sailboat: I think you need one luff ring at the top of the sail; a little more of the jib curve (leech); and grease the rudder shaft so that it turns more smoothly. I see that you are a professional in everything

8:35 I think what might be the proper way to rig that is have one continuous line anchored at the end of the mast extension (towards the stern end), thread it down through the upper rear/stern side sail riveted attachment point, then along the top of the sail, through front/bow end attachment point, and then up to the block used for adjustment, in one continuous piece, allowing a more complete tensioning system.
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 5 жыл бұрын
Hmm, that sounds interesting. Thanks for the tip
@BikingVikingHH
@BikingVikingHH 2 жыл бұрын
I believe that’s incorrect. If it were just a “loop”, it would be doing nothing but providing downward pressure on the mast, but not locating it front or rear. By tension in it with two separate lines, you can change not only the downward pressure, but also the angle/bow of the mast front or, more importantly, to the rear. Expert sail shaping I don’t quite understand 🤷🏼‍♂️

The bow looks totally weird, at least compared to full scale. Maybe the designer knows something I don't and I do know they need to run way more underwater lateral area for upwind performance.. Edit: looks like the bow was designed for maximum volume, probably to avoid stuffing it. Bad for performance though :)
