Volkswagen Golf R MK7 Review | Is it the best used hot hatch money can buy?

In this video, I review a Volkswagen Golf R MK7. This particular car is heavily modified in a visual sense but bone stock in terms of performance so how I feel about the car having owned a BMW M135i and currently a VW Golf R32 MK5? I clearly like hot hatches that offer a very different flavour so once and for all, we'll find out if the Golf R is the best used hot hatch or not.

That's it's calling card but that's where I think that's also it's weakness as it's built to be everything but not something specific like a proper drivers car

The MK 7.5R has 7 gears over the 6 gears on a pre facelift. That's what makes all the difference in both cars bro. Forget all the sweeping indicator bollocks lol

Yep, the extra gears makes the car a bit more fuel efficient on longer runs and the virtual cockpit I think is a massive bonus. The same things apply to the 8V S3 facelift

That dq381 is overated, it doesn't handle as much torque as a 6spd dq250, the dq500 is the daddy, these vag mqb 4wd cars are great from a to but dull after a while, try a fwd cupra which is lighter and quicker on a roll and will eat this r on a circuit

I have to be honest and say I like my OEM+ cars and the only mod I find strong is the bonnet vents which is something I have banter with the owner of the car with constantly. I respect the build as he's taken something and created a very unique car. A car that is so common on our roads and personally, I respect his taste and his investment into his car

The R suffers the same problem as S/RS models though, almost always being driven badly. There's loads of them near me, always seen doing 80 in a 30... I would say a GTi is much more involving drive mostly the person behind the wheel is driving the car not the car driving the driver dsg farting into the distance lol Maybe I'm just getting old 😂😂😂🧓🧓🧓

The R and the S3 does attract an audience that sells street pharmaceuticals. Low-key yet fast enough to run away from the authorities! The GTI will be more involving with the FWD aspect for sure and this is definitely age talking because the R has overtaken GTIs in recent years in terms of popularity

I still very much appreciate the R’s as cars and what they offer but the unique characteristics of the straight six coupled with the RWD is just *chefs kiss*, also the ZF8 especially paired with the B58 is magnificent. I’ll find it very very hard to get rid of mine anytime soon, not in the slightest bit bored after over 2 years and there’s still so many mods to explore to make it even better😭😭

I feel exactly the same about the M Lites as you do. The Golf is a better car. But the BMW is a better performance car.
