Volkswagen Passat R36 B6 vs Volkswagen Golf R32 MK5 | VR6 Battle!

In this video, I review a Volkswagen Passat R36 against a Volkswagen Golf R32. Both cars have VR6 up top but they differ in displacement and power. The R32 is the most popular VR6 engined car out of Wolfsburg but the R36 is the final iteration of that engine before they downsized into turbocharged four cylinders. Is that Passat that special of a car? Is the Golf all you need?

Great video. Thanks for making it! The R32 Mk5 can do 5.6s to 60mph stock. But good fuel is needed. RON 98+.

That's not what my research said. It does 6.5s according to what looked into

@@CarNitty It depends on the fuel. I've tested my very stock R32 many times with Dragy. 95RON definitely gives numbers in the 6s, but 98RON (Bp ultimate in Australia ) 5.6 launched & 5.8 unlaunched. Incredibly even in the rain. The fuel cap sticker says either one is compatible but I always fork out a little more for the added smiles per gallon. I wouldn't be surprised if the R36 is even quicker than the numbers floating around but sadly don't know anyone with one. Your vid is very good, you can only go with what info is out there. I also have magazine tests with the mid 6s mentioned!

@@ossiebalboa5617 i have a r36 tuned and exhaust best i have done is 4.89 seconds stock no turbo just done two things a tune, considering stock before at times i could get 5.2 seconds with launch control without i was getting 5.7 to 5.6 seconds they say stock they get 5.8 as the wagon is heavy, while the Saden version they get 5.6 stock. due to the r32 been lighter it can achieve stock 5.6 to 5.8 from what i heard with a tune. Which is pretty dam good, my brothers audi tt 3.2 is the same engine as the r32 gets 5.2 seconds stock even states it online. It also depends how healthy the car is if its got some issues that will effect the top performance.

I have a Passat R36 with a cat delete and TSW wheels (idk which ones) and compared to the R32, they are technically the same, other than the weight of the R32, the body size, (wagon and sedan). They are also great cars, so if i had a choice on what car to get, id get both. 2.8, 3.2, and 3.6 are all great engines.

Great great video. The sedan is actually a tad quicker at 5.4 seconds Would of been interesting if you did a race between the r36 and r32. Does the r32 have launch control? I know the r36 does.

Yes, the saloon is even faster but I'd get the estate if I was in the market for one and yes, the R32 does have launch control as well

THE FACT IS THAT THE SaLOON IS ONLY .2 SECONDS FASTER.....AAand at 45 more hp how much more fuel is the thing using up? being as its heavier and larger....i will stick with my r32 with the mods it has....

I enjoy your content but please do your Reseach and stop misinforming people on the chains. The chains can last a well over 180k miles if the car has regular services at 6/7k and you don’t use long life 3 oil which causes the chain stretch due to sludge build up which throws readings out. Also chain rattle can be caused simply by the failing bolt tensioner at the back of the engine. Which can be changed and helps extend the life of the chain. Wish you all the best 🙏🏾

I've owned 2x R32s and I've seen the timing chain gone wrong. It's a huge problem and a very expensive issue. VW themselves claim the chain will last around 80k miles so another 100k miles is a massive increase in assumption. 120k is roughly where they go wrong if not dealt with but the best way to know the condition of the change is using vagcom or vcds and checking the chain tolerance figure. In a review, I can't go too into detail about these kinds of stuff as it can be boring to those who just want to watch a review for entertainment and not for buying advice which is the majority

I too have owned many ( 5 including 3 vr6) you don’t have to go into details it’s a matter of advising people to regularly service their cars to get the best out of the chain. There are too many people scaring others about potential chain issues and changing them when in reality it’s not necessary. The issue is the R32 became a 4.5k car in around 2015-2019 and then these cars fell into the wrong hands. Owners that couldn't afford these and now there's so many abused examples on the market. Glad you liked the video. Thanks for your viewership

The problem is most of us will be buying these cars used with uncertain history. I bought mine from the first owner with 245k Km on the clock of mostly highway miles. Timing was within spec but the chain was rattling so to be safe I had new chain installed. Since it was an engine-out job I decided to go the whole hog and had the engine rebuilt top and bottom, put in new clutches and new mechatronic unit. It was costly but a once and for all job.

There is an "S" on my gear stick that I never use because "D" is fine. I tried "S" and hit the accelerator and it roared very loud to an amazing 5000 rev's in a second ! But it doesn't make sense because I only want to go from A to B in a comfortable and safe manner. I never go over 3000 rev's because I want the engine to last as long as possible. I have this nice blue R36 now seven months and it doesn't disappoint so far. Could have a bit more ground clearance at the front and a bit less noise from the exhaust. Don't be afraid to rev out your car. They're performance cars designed to be enjoyed but give the car a rest afterwards and take it easy and always make sure it's warmed running at optimum temperature beforehand

@@CarNitty Thanks ! It was most certainly on warmed up temperature when I did that. I just ran into this car by coincidence. I couldn't ignore the price that was being asked. I am 68 and lack the courage to go faster than say 130 km's (80 ml's) an hour. And my left eye isn't that sharp anymore either (Macula). But I certainly enjoy driving it 😃

I don't think sourcing parts is as difficult as you might think. The engine shares a lot with an R32 so I'm sure majority of parts are readily available

Only parts which may be hard to come by are the seats, front bumper and the grille. Alot of other parts are from the b6 and even the b7 Passat.

I think I should've mentioned in the video for Passat others to be beware of R32 owners coming to "buy" your R36 for a joy ride 🤣 I've summed up the main differences in the video and you'll only get it at the high end the Speedo, not the rev range

The passat cc with 3.6 engine is exactly the same as the engine in that passat b6 R36. But its not just the same car without the R36 badging. The cc was built as a comfort coupe. The R36 is built more hardcore. With different sport seats and slightly different suspension setup. Were as the cc is more off a cruizer. Better isolated against road noise and stuff. Some people call it the passat cc R36. But this is incorrect. There was never a passat cc R36. Its just a cc with the same 3.6liter engine but with a completly different purpose. More comfortable

Both are extremely smooth as they're both 6 cylinder cars. The R36 has the edge of more top end power but in terms of casual driving, you'd never feel the difference

The R36 is quite a hard car to get hold of so ultimately an R32 owner may have bought an R36 if there were more examples out there
