Thanks for the great review, Thomas. I think the ID.7 looks great as a wagon. To my eye, better than the fastback version. VW has a vast and long-standing customer base for their variants, and I think this one will appeal to that group. The only two flaws I see are the capacitive buttons on the steering wheel and the two power window switch configuration. It mystifies me as to why VW hasn’t revised these two almost universally disliked details. Overall, though, this looks like the best ID model yet.

the odd part is that they reversed the buttons on the new passat and golf and made both move towards the same gear selector, its truly bizzare. Still tho having driven the new 7 it is overall a good car, much better than the first ID3 and 4s so good that theyre making the right steps

I’m a really big fan of this car. Feels like the VW dad had when I was younger: less tacky white plastic and ‘futuristic design’ than the ID.3, AND IT’S AN ESTATE! I’m so happy. An estate at last. I love the tiny little speedometer as well.

On the lack of Frunk/Froot - I have a pre-facelift ID3 and of course it has no frunk. But how do manufacturers get the space to provide a frunk? They carefully design and position their components to make the most efficient use of space and energy consumption. In my ID3 I can almost put my arm into the space under the bonnet/hood, behind and around major components. And if you really look, there is loads of separated space. More than enough to design in a small frunk if the components were designed to fit in better. I think VW have missed an opprtunity there. And btw, the layout under the bonnet/hood of this car looks remarkably similar, so there should be more space [bigger vehicle]. Nod to Thomas and team - great video as always. And surprisingly, yes you can be 189cm and 6ft 2ins at the same time. 😉

the IDs all share the same MEB platform, so as far as suspension layout battery and even motors recently goes theyre more or less identical. Tesla specced really hard into optimizing everything form wise and they produce it all in house, VW has a small ocean of subcontractors and its just far more economically viable for them to just not bother optimizing that much, which sadly results in no frunk.

@@morepower1989 Drive it and you will see....I have an experience of 25 Years Audi V6 TDI and have driven the ID7 last week...this is easily on same comfort level as any Audi...and way quieter due to missing engine sound. During my test drive I had 18.6kwh/100km...means about 400km with the smaller battery...after this you need a 30mins break anyway.

Overall I think the design is a lot more proportional than the sedan/liftback. The Id.7 has a somewhat unusual hood line so the body looks tall and the roofline extends too far on the sedan. This wagon fixes both proportional issues.

Those capacitive buttons on the steering wheel are a problem. I have them on my 2 year old Arteon fastback and it just needed a new steering wheel because the buttons failed. Fortunately done under warranty but it would have cost £700 if not.

FINALLY more EV options for us that prefer Estate cars (Astra Sports Tourer did not get as high praise as i was hoping for), it still has a somewhat slanted rear but nowhere near as intrusive as all the "coupe" style SUV:s & "fake" estate cars etc etc. Now, if only Volvo could release a full EV similar to the V60 or V60CC ;)

Why is it that some German car manufacturers opt to place the charging port on the right side? In my experience, especially when parking in my compact garage (a frequent challenge in Germany) I tend to pull in closer to the right side to allow for easier exit from the vehicle, which unfortunately positions the charging port on the far side. This design aspect is a significant no-go for me in buying a car with such a configuration.

I believe the way electrochromic glass works is that they go clear when an electrical current is passed through them. So it makes sense the roof would automatically "close" when you turned off the ignition. Otherwise it would eventually drain the battery.

Hi Thomas! Good review again, as always and yes, keep reminding car manufacturers that the steering wheel capacitive buttons are BS. As is the touch slider of the sun roof. I counted 14 movements of your finger of which only 12 where succesful. So that's a failure rate of 14%. I suggest to cut the salary of the responsible project manager that insisted on having a capacitive button by 14% immediately. As a kind of lack of performance bonus. Let me tell you this: the sunroof in my 190E works with a simple and elegant switch that I can find even without looking at it and in works 100% of the time.

I think the SUV fad is ever so slightly starting to fade. People are getting tired of the huge size and clunky ride. Estate/wagon/kombi designs seem to be getting a little more attention. This one is pretty elegant looking, particularly for an EV. If they bring it to the US, VW need to come up with a really good marketing push to convince more people to consider wagons.

For me a tourer is a vehicle u can load up with gear, 2 in the front and 2 in the back. Fill it so that it says 900km on the range and off u go

IMO VW almost always wins for exterior design and this has been the case for decades. The ID7 cockpit is looking good but not a fan of the _2-switch_ window switch-gear. The absence of FRUNK indicates that VW is still a decade or more behind Tesla on systems engineering and design.

@@sunsetter That is true, Q4 is based on ID4 essentially. However, the Q6 should come out this year, which will be based on PPE platform, same as A6 e-tron. They will share their underpinnings with what Macan is based on. MEB might be used only for lower end models, up to A3/Q3/Q4. Anything above A3 used MLB platform, which was VAG's "elite" platform and only Touareg from VW was based on it. I assume Škoda will launch their version of ID.7 but that's not something you guys in America have either.

As I've recently purchased an estate due to affinity for them and disdain for massive SUV's clogging the roads I have to say VW has some less than stellar design/practicality choices here. The led flashlight across the facia, perhaps subjective, but it is truly gaudy on everything from ID's, Arteons, Golf, BMW's and such. The massive tesla-syndrome screen that is completely un-integrated in the design and everything being touch without anything physical, with rpm/fuel gauges being redundant the cockpit can be fully delegated to primary speed, charge, navigation, modes etc. with a smaller secondary akin to Audi placement integrated into the middle with physical necessities for HVAC, seat/wheel heating, volume on/off etc. Worrisome amounts of piano black everywhere. plus price-wise for what is neither passat nor phaeton starting (realistically being much more over) 60k EUR is crazy. And this can only mean similar sister brands will follow with Audi's 10k markup on top while likely Skoda will follow with barely 10k below and all lose the value proposition equally.

Now bring tesla infrastructure inside the car and i would buy it but never again with vw after 4 MEBs The other parameters and space definitely nice and will sell to some tourer guys but not at this price

Main competitor to this is the Model Y Lr which starts at 50k€ with full equipment... Not even close, I honestly have no idea what are they smoking at VW group

Loooool The Model Y LR costs €54k and has way way less range and way worse interior with many comfort and tech features missing. The Model Y is totally outdated at this point.

@Aztasu Outdate by what standards, look and feel? underneath see multiple improvement changes yearly. Software and hardware are still ahead many others... but hey I guess VW has nothing to worry about.

Regulations are strange. EU law is stricter in illumination design, US law is stricter in high beam range

So, I see all these reviews, what I'm missing in all of them is there self driving capabilites. Why are they never in these reviews? I understand BMW has a really good on in the 7 series. Not helpful for me. But for instance the i5 has a simpler version that is still quite good. Basically, what I want to know is: how good are they if you compare one with the other?

Hello, I've already seen many reviews of the ID.7 Tourer, but I couldn't find information anywhere from anyone about how many cm does the trunk (luggage door) will extend beyond the rear bumper when opening? It is important information for us, because the length of our garage is only 5200 mm and I think we are not the ones who has such a garage...;-) Please are you able to measure and compare this information between the regular ID.7 and the ID.7 Tourer? How many extra cm does the trunk door take up from the normal length of the car when opening for the ID.7 and for the ID.7 Tourer?

@@autogefuehl It is easy. When opening, I stop the trunk door (just put your hand there, it stops automatically) at the point where it extends most over the rear bumper. I lower a vertical line (meter, string, cord) from the edge of the open door and measure on the ground by how many cm it extends the rear bumper , i.e. how many extra spaces do I have to add to the length of the car in order to be able to open the trunk in the garage (or another place).

Looks better than the new Passat estate. But smaller. I really hate the lack of proper dash behind the wheel of ID cars. It should be exactly vice versa, good dash and smaller "tablet" aside.

Starting at €55k or whatever it should be AWD to start with. This is way more expensive than even an AWD Tesla Model Y? I would used the frunk in the Model Y more if it was a power hood like the tail gate.

I see they have copied the white interior accents of the Tesla. However this is a very very nice looking car. Beautifully proportioned on the exterior and better looking than the saloon. It seems far too expensive though. Here in the UK the refreshed Model 3 with 320 miles range sells for just €46,700

Thomas, look into the Stabila BM 150 pocket tape measure. Only 3 meters, but fits in your pocket and gives you the reading from the top of the housing, German designed natürlich! Oder, es gibt Stahlwille with a small Rollbandmaß that is actually made in Germany. Comes in 3 or 5 meter versions. No more folding rulers please - highly inaccurate and clunky.
