I think you were being too fussy but I understand why. You buy cars with the ultimate intention of driving the car as your own for a period while having one eye on selling the car as stock. Porsche advertised the car at a keen price and offered to fund remedial work to satisfy you. You on the other hand have chosen to publicly blacklist the car and make it difficult for Porsche to sell it. They will not forget. Good luck with your search.

Being fussy about an £87k used car I don’t think is worth unreasonable. But this isn’t being fussy - being fussy is worrying about the scratches on both sill cover just beneath where you can see without looking, or the hard use it’s had that you can never delete from KZbin. Who’s made this car hard to sell? Me or Porsche for painting it 2 different colours and lending it out for hard use as a promotional vehicle for the brand?

Morning Andrew. I've had a friend look at the PPN report and you are right, it shows a new clutch being done at 3800 miles, 2 new windscreens, 2 new front lips, 2 rear diffusers, seat bolster repair, alloy wheel repair to name a few. It was used at Goodwood, by TopGear and numerous reviewers plus it was used by Emma Raducanu for a spell. No notes on a full front respray but, as you say, the tell tales are obvious enough to be 99% certain. I think maybe a bullet well dodged. I would have also insisted an over rev report especially on a manual car. Lots of nice GT4s out there and I would most definitely stick with the Porsche approved network. It's a shame that the Reading demos get a hard life but I suppose that's what they're there for.

@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
Morning Dan, thanks for the valuable intel. With regards to over revs and front end respray, the pre-sale prep report from Reading stated no over revs which I was surprised about as in this Top Gear video it's bouncing off the rev limiter kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYTMaXeXh7Zqn9Esi=Kg5kAUY5C97rV_wz&t=637. I know this isn't a damaging over rev considering money shift potential with a manual, but it's all you can do with a PDK and it still gets recorded. The prep report also stated front end paintwork but as you say you don't need a report to confirm that. I'm still looking but I'm less convinced now by the extra £6k-£10k Porsche Centres charge, after all the warranty can be purchased separately and a good low miler won't need any refurb.
@zaink7037 Жыл бұрын
Quite a shocking repair list for something which has done such ultra low miles. I'd agree and stay well away from it. Yes it's a lot of money and someone who can afford that can afford the repairs however better to be advised beforehand and not lose money on something you know that could lose you money

I bought a 1 owner 24k mile 987 Cayman 3.4S but before purchase went over the car with a fine toothcomb. The paintwork was absolutely flawless in every way. This was a £19k 13 year old car. To spend £87k on a car youred expect it to be perfect or as near as. Every used car will have signs of use and maybe some paintwork done but in this case whoever painted this car needs an eyetest. Frozen Berry is a very rare colour and made in small batches. The colour would have had to be specially matched by a spectrometer which any good paint factor could have done. This car needs the whole front end repainting or even possibly the whole car. Unbeliveable that a OPC thought it an acceptable job. Ive been selling cars for 22 years and wouldnt have a Astra for £5k on the forecout with a paint mismatch like this let alone a car 20times the price! Seeing the car on a track and thrashed to within an inch of its life, needing a new clutch at 8k miles would also be a no no for me. This car has rightly now been marked as a nail and likely will be extremely hard to sell. Id put its value at no more than £50K as its an auction car in reality. You really dodged a bullet with this car.👍😮
@Porky190 Жыл бұрын
There is a way round the colour issue… obviously the doors will need doing and the way I do it is too paint half the door and use blending/fade out thinner over the lacquer edge and then polish the edge back…. A bit of meticulous prep and it works all the time.

Every time I deal with West London I am reminded why I have stayed with Swindon for 15 years…. Not all OPCs are the same and in recent years the pressure to sell seems to have changed their sales practices. Avoid all the London OPCs and avoid anyone who uses pressure sales to sell a Porsche. I agreed to buy a GT3 from Chester last year who then sold it from under me and didn’t tell me…. Don’t be put off using an OPC, but demand good service. If you don’t get it, walk away.

Why would anyone deal with a used car seller that lies and cheats. This probably applies to every brand. Many BMWs are registered with the number plates starting with Y. This is because of the BMW Import Centre based just outside of Doncaster. Doesn’t always mean that it’s been trashed on track or has been part of the press fleet but may have been an ex-demo or have been a company car.

Several years ago I bought a bmw 2 series coupe that has the Y number plate and found out that was a bmw car but didn’t put me off and bought it. Year later when I got it serviced the dealer asked if I’d been driving it really hard which I hadn’t! All then made sense so I quickly sold it after that

Pretty much every Y BMW and MINI will be ex-BMW fleet, both my and my neighbour’s MINIs are. As I mentioned in another comment, there are usually clues on the build sheet of those to anything out of the ordinary - I forget the numbers off the top of my head,however there is one for “management” cars, which are normally those either used by HO or in the case of new models used to demonstrate them to the dealers prior to the launch, or press cars, which have their own code (S900 or something in that region) to identify them.
@bigjml Жыл бұрын
I registered cars from Mercedes are as likely to be ex Lease as they are the Press Fleet or exHire Cars as all cars registered to MBFS have a “K” The way to tell is check the PDi certificate inside the service book as it will have the first keeper details even if the car was registered to MBFS Cars from BMW with the Y could indeed be Press Fleet or Hire Cars but they could also be ex BMW UK Management cars

I had a very similar experience with Porsche Edinburgh last week, albeit on a Cayman S. Similar to you the price and spec caught my eye, looking at the spec I did think track car but not Porsche GB owned. I was firstly told by the sales manager that "it had never been near a track", following getting the figures I was happy with I asked for this in writing as like yourself I had to travel some distance to see the car. I was then told the first owner was Porsche GB and it had been a press car, and used at the Silverstone Porsche experience centre. Needless to say I was not happy and I walked away from the car, I actually noticed today it has now been sold. I wonder if they have been honest with the person who did buy it. So I would 100% agree with you, even dealing with a Porsche approved dealer you can't believe what you are being told.

I think you've missed something important here. The car is retailing over 10k less than equivalent cars. The car needs a respray which would cost around 8k at a Porsche approved centre. If you don't mind it's been a press car then I'd buy the car, get the respray and fix the niggles under warranty. You're not going to find a car over 10k below retail without caveats. Its 10k under for a reason.

I'd never knowingly buy a press demonstrator, same as I'd never knowingly buy a tuned turbo engined car. Regarding the paint, I can imagine it would be a bloody nightmare trying to match that colour. I remember going to look at a Pearlescent white Audi S2 back in the day, and the touch-ups to the paint stood out like a sore thumb. It wasn't just white with mica in it, it had a few tones going on. So god knows how hard it is to match the colour of the porker [not that I like it I'm afraid, the colour that is]

Honestly baffled at this. Anyone saying you're being "too fussy", is insane. You buy a Porsche for their notoriuous attention to detail, perfection, heratige and driving feel. I'm shocked a Porsche dealer went about it as they did and it being such a reputable one at that! The whacky colours are always better too, in my opinion. I'd rather something unique (he says with a white Golf...) and have it stand out so I feel like I've got something unique. As well, you buy a car for you to enjoy, so I say all power to you for the colour. It's cool af! I had a similar experience when I was buying my first Edition 40. I wasn't as patient or as trained as you with seeing the signs of problems, but thankfully I was able to get out of it and my money back to buy a proper one. The excitement got the better of me. Hopefully you can find the right car for you and forfill the Porsche dream. As sad as it is, this was the best case and you're not having to deal with fixing things to make this car perfect, which is what it should be as it's a Porsche. But, in saying that, this goes for any car. No car should but missold to anyone because cars aren't cheap. But high end, premium cars really shouldn't!

Andrew, I went to purchase 2 911’s from my local OPC. One very base 911 and also a Targa 4S. I was ok if I had to order new or if there was anything second hand suitable. Bearing in mind how much money I was prepared to part with I was a little surprised when I heard absolutely nothing after the test drives. In fact they just closed my enquiry file with no action. I was then contacted 3 or 4 months later asking me if a new salesperson can help as the other person had left and yes they’d done absolutely zero with my ask. You can work out the numbers £ they ignored. Suffice to say I gave them a piece of my mind. Yes I am already a 911 owner but still it’s a shocking experience

Being VAT Qualifying, it’s going to end up in the UAE, Pakistan or Malaysia one would have to think. Sporty Vat Q stuff under 5yrs old seems to go that way from my limited experience. Porsche must have written it down on their books to not a lot, and it’s earned its money in promotional payback surely? Trying to wring a retail sale out of it when, like you say it seems to dip below their retail standards seems at odds with the product, quality image they strive for. I’m sure they have their reasons. I agree that walking away was the right move, even though you were already visualising the ownership and first road trip. Maybe they’ll call you on Monday and offer it to you for £50k??? 🤔. It happens to us all when you love cars, especially quirky ones. Onwards and upwards…

Indeed, it would've..... and honestly, and I know this is on my 4K Samsung TV, so potentially it's not relaying through, but I really couldn't see a difference in paint shade or metallic or anything on the Frozen Berry.... I just couldn't see it. 🤷♂️🧐 Personally, depending on the reduction in sales price offered due to this alleged paint miss match I can't notice, I would've brought it.... after they fixed that throw out bearing he clearly heard screaming 😅

To be honest walked through porsche Perth forecourt recently and standard of cars looked more co-part than high end main dealer. 3 cars had panel gaps so far off not sure how bonnet even operated on one. Paint work on others iffy even other half noticed one that looked like it had been cleaned with a Brillo pad. No correction done or would most detailers thank you for giving them such a challenge. Think to my 17 year old boxster was straighter than some on the forecourt. Kinda shocking for a main dealer. So share your concerns of Porsche standards. Sad to say the least

thank you for the great content! I have a press car, one of the first boxster press cars so just a bit of fun but one thing, it's nice to have the magazine pictures of it now. It may have had a hard life but it gives something as well. I would assume they knew that the car was mismatched and that's why they took the offer and why they displayed the car in poor light. Disappointing.

I purchased the Lava Orange 718 Boxster press car and was very happy with it until it came time to trade it in and I was told by Porsche Kendal that it had a bad respray to the rear end and the wheels were badly painted. Now in the 2 years I owned the car, there had been no accidents and the car had come direct from Porsche GB and was sold through Porsche Exeter. Shows that even Porsche try and sell a dodgy car

Good video. As with most things it is buyer beware. I bought a MK5 Golf GTI from main VW dealer only 18 months old and when I came to sell it 18m later I found it had been stolen/recovered. Nothing on HPI but a guy in a motor trade used Experian Motor and it came up there. Regardless of brand/make the sales sharks will say anything to get that sale.

A clutch after 4000 miles! Remember the rest of the drive train had this abuse, that is an average of 80,000 miles abuse (You would expect a clutch to last that far with a careful driver) in a short time. Whoever had it really gave it some. I wouldn't have considered it at all.

2 things meant I was OK with press use a) it's a GT car so should be tough b) apparently they go through a comprehensive refurb process. What I later discovered (and the fact the paint was crap was lucky because I had a good excuse to walk) was that yes the GT cars are tough but they are designed for track use and racing, not drifting with loads of smoke coming off tyres and not repeated launches to measure 0-62 times. Racing car drivers are smooth as it's faster and easier on the hardware. With regards to refurb, yes they spent a good chunk on it cosmetically but it's the bits you can't see that are excessively worn as you say and while there is a warrantyt you can bet they will fail out of warranty or be deemed wear and tear items. Never again

I don’t trust Solicitors, Estate Agents, Home Report Surveyors and not lastly (there are more) Car Traders. Sadly we need to use them at sometime. At what price would you say “yeah that paint mismatch is ok or the scuffed wheels are ok too? Personally I took weeks or trawling through car add’s before buying my MB E Class estate (1 owner and a full MB service history) Now my car came with a comprehensive warranty (AA) and needed 3 visits to my mechanics shop, in the first 3 months of ownership. Total cost to put things right £2000. (At no cost to me) Do I like my new purchase, yes. Would I buy an used car without a warranty, no. I’ve covered 10,000 miles in 10 months of ownership of my E Class and I’m totally happy with it, although having to put things right in the short time of owning it was a bit frustrating. I keep my cars for over 5 years, while also keeping pace with their servicing history. PS My Beagle (Paul) loves the air suspension too!

You did right by getting your deposit back, you would always be looking at the colour difference. Just goes to show that you can't really trust ANY dealer. Years ago I bought an Audi A4 convertible from an Audi dealership, fair enough it's nothing like the price bracket of your car but it was still a lot of my hard earned money. Anyway, I did all the relevant checks and checked all the paperwork and asked the obvious question has it ever been involved in any accident/bumps etc. The salesmen said no, we're not a back street dealer, and he looked a little offended. The sale went through after a week or 2 and I was proud as punch driving my first Audi home. The first thing I did at the weekend was give it a good valeting inside (tbh it didn't really need it), imagine my surprise and horror when I opened the glove compartment and found photos and garage paperwork of the damage and repair to my vehicle that had supposedly not been in an accident ! I was so sick and gutted that I didn't even want to tell my wife because I felt such a fool. It was the same Audi dealerships' bodywork department that had done the work and it had the main bodyworks' foreman's phone number on it. I rang him and asked him what was the accident etc., it turns out it had been a vehicle that the dealer gives a customer when their car is in for service etc and the accident had actually happened on a winters morning in the dealers car park! Now, I had my suspicions that this foreman maybe had had a 'beef' with the salesman for something or other and had deliberately left this information in the glove compartment so it could be found as they didn't like the way things were being sold. I say this because he seemed to want to give me all the info no problem. Anyway, I rang the salesman and rejected the car (even though everything had been repaired) because I didn't like being blatantly lied to, maybe this was a mistake I will never know but we have principles, right? Oh, when I mentioned about the photos/paperwork to the salesman that I found in the glove compartment he tried to turn it on it's head and said something like " Yeah we left them there so it shows we have nothing to hide "................what a banker with a w !

You can always have some frozen berries for your pudding to make up for this! On a serious note, I work next to a Porsche dealer and look at their stock most days. Do you think it would be possible to buy a used cayman, keep it for a year and sell it on without losing too much money?
@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
I don't think I can look at frozen berries ever again! If you buy from Porsche as an approved used car you get 2 years warranty, so after 1 year you can pass the balance on to next owner if you sell privately. But you'll still never get back anything like what you paid because Porsche main dealers charge a good chunk more than everyone else for that peace of mind. Only way to beat the system is buy privately at well below dealer retail and be lucky without a warranty. Or car prices go up which is a rare phenomenon and we are unlikely to see a repeat of what we had in 2021/2022 for a long time. Porsches sub £50k generally hold their price well though

The best thing you ever did was pass on that car. It likely had body damage and repaint. Boxsters are an easy pass as they cost a fortune to maintain. Also, as you might know, the PORSCHE parts are pricey.

The bonnet may have been replaced due to stone chips or ripple dents from cameras suction mounts. The pictures that Porsche have uploaded must have been altered or be even from a different car as no mis-match can be seen. This sort of thing should not be found in a Porsche GB main dealer. That poor GT4 was part of the Porsche Experience Track Day Fleet as well so it no wonder why the clutch needed to be replaced after 4000 miles. I hope you can find another GT3 soon.

As soon as I discovered it was a Porsche UK Press car I would be walking away. With respect to your channel, you only have to look at the way other KZbinrs & the main stream motoring journalists drive Press Cars/Demonstrators to know you wouldn't want to own one afterwards no matter how good the manufacturers or dealer warranty is. As for Porsche dealers, at the end of the day, like all car dealers they are in the business of selling as many cars as they can & meeting sales targets. The fact they had the car in poor light & not in a position to have it test driven that day was no doubt deliberate. You went into this with your experience & "Dealers Hat On". An ordinary buyer would be less aware & lulled into a false sense of security by the glossy showroom & OPC "Approved Pre-Owned" marketing.

Porsche assumes their customers are complete idiots. There's a theory that the more a customer spends, the less likely they are to scrutinize the goods. They got caught out this time, but clearly didn't care given the car was back on the sales list that same day. I hope the next person takes a long hard look and tells them where to stick it. That said I do love the colour.
