Firstly let me say that the Mk7 Golf R is a great car! It's been hobbled slightly by VW under-engineering some key components (manual clutch and cooling system) but once these are attended to, it's actually quite reliable.
As well as these two mechanical areas, there was definitely a reduction in paint quality from Mk6 to Mk7 which wasn't reflected in the Audi A3's transition from 8P to 8V model at the same time. This came as a bit of a shock as I've used the flawless factory finish of VWs to check for accident repairs for many years so finding they come from the factory
with some of these hallmarks of bodyshop job changes ones perspective somewhat.
I started Volkswizard in 2002 because I felt the basic quality standards of VW Group cars meant I could buy and sell used examples, sometimes with over 100,000 miles on the clock, with minimal risk which was good for profitability but also for business reputation. As cars have become more complicated this sensation of trust has gradually ebbed away but I've tried to mitigate this effect on profitability by becoming more and more hands on with the common repairs that seem to affect all cars. With the Mk7 R this went beyond what I could deal with myself, which along with other issues made me seriously question if I continue running my business. This distrust of the Mk7 R has been hinted at in my previous videos and with Mk8 R on the horizon, I wanted to put the record straight and start my assessment of the new model with a clean sheet, because from what I've seen so far the Mk8 looks incredible, I just hope the reality lives up to the hype this time.
