Great tip, thanks coach! A really great way to practice hitting volleys. However, I would emphasize a little more on the split step. The split step is so important especially for hitting volleys in my opinion.

5 to 0 to 5 system is a very nice way of describing the hitting positions for three types of volleys. The absorbing exercise is fun. What about the grip? Continental grip for all types of volleys?

Basically the impact is a collision. To add power you need to win the collision with the ball. To place a volley you need to meet the ball with the same collision. To hit a drop volley you need lose the collision.

Although it was not mentioned in the volley tips the student, Carlie has very good footwork. She is on the balls of her feet ready to move and steps in towards the ball to volley. She plays the ball and is ready to adjust her body position. Many players think you only volley with your racquet but proper footwork and knee bend is essential. In today’s modern tennis with emphasis on topspin ground strokes and western grips and two handed backhands the proper volley technique is a dying skill. Players should watch KZbin videos of old players like John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Pat Cash, Stefan Edberg, Rod Laver if they want to see great volley technique.
