@naylisyazwina68364 жыл бұрын
yup
@Moribax854 жыл бұрын
the explanation is correct, but the translation doesn't really convey the meaning well: Senpai is an honorific given to an elder member of your organization (elder as experience, not age), being it school, workplace, sports club, or pretty much everything, and a Senpai is expected to assume the role of a mentor. Kouhai is basically the opposite, it's your younger member, which you're expected to help, protect and counsel.

Not a spoiler but to help you understand the episode Coach Donny: - Oikawa (captain and official setter of Seijoh) is the upperclassman (senpai) of Kageyama during middle school, Kitagawa Daichii. When Kageyama was 1st yr in middle school, Oikawa was 3rd yr at that time. So Kageyama only spent one year with Oikawa as his teammates during middle school (and Oikawa was also their captain during middle school). That is why Kageyama told them that he learn serving and blocking thru him. - Kindaichi and Kunimi (during the scene in the faucet) was Kageyama's former teammates during his middle school and was the same age with Kageyama. So basically they were teammates for 3 yrs the whole duration of middle school. Kindaichi was a middle blocker that is why he hates Kageyama because his toss was difficult to hit, hence with the nickname they gave to Kageyama - King of the Court. - Hinata gave Oikawa nickname, The Great King, because he is Kageyama's senpai and learns everything from him. Since Kageyama is called King of the Court, he gave Oikawa The Great King. Kinda like a higher position than Kageyama.

I really love how actually he doesn't come of as that unlikable at all. Like he'S legit really polite, and honest and kinda fair. He even compliments them on their good offense and the quick. He just seems unlikable because Kageyama says it, because the fans are fawning over him and because he is confident.
@dinkybarrel4 жыл бұрын
@@Ari33sa Nah, it's not because of Kageyama's impression. His niceness is a bit condescending and when he does deliver poison, it's often done with the same smile. His general character is one that (on the surface) is very flippant, and it does rub people the wrong way. I say this as an Oikawa-stan mind you. I love him to bits hahaha, but he is what he is.
@Ari33sa4 жыл бұрын
@@dinkybarrel yeah I definitely agree with that he's very flippant and seems somewhat condescening (though much of the more condescending attitude changes after the game when we meet them during practice, and he's very different with his teammates). But I still think, that much of why he first comes across as arrogant and unlikable, is because a) Kageyama says it and b) he's an opponent and thus we are immediately poised to be against him. He's very much introduced with the 'air, atmosphere and commentary' fitting for a rather intimidating and unlikeable antagonist, and it takes a while during his first episode (at least for me when I first watched the show) to realize, that 'Antagonist' in this show just means they are players who play the other team, not that they are actually in any way unlikeable. I don'T know if this makes sense. But somehow, although this is a sports anime, I expected, that there would be something that not only draws me towards Karasuno as the protagonist team (something I could sympathize with) but also something that pushes me away from sympathising with the opponent team. In this episode (at least before we meat them during the training scene) I was still very much in the vein of 'this is the sympathetic team with the sympathetic energetic Hinata and all the guys I'm going to like soon enough - and this other enemy is one douchebag and his goons'. But it quickly changed to 'wel actually I like Oikawa as much if not more than the members of karasuno and I'm actually rooting for him and his team.'

This is really the best nickname of Haikyuu so far, *Tooru "K-pop Setter" Oikawa* , and I kinda wondering what would come next though, LoL... The other best comment is, _"The Guardian Deity... who is this guy? ... must be injured or busy cleaning the closet..?!"_ couldn't stop laughing about that ^.^ the guardian deity is busy cleaning the closet about the Japanese honorific suffixes when calling people, there are several ways that mostly based on the age and/or rank in the society/organization, the most common are: - _san_ is the common way to address someone who is in equal between ages. - _chan_ expresses that the speaker finds a person is endearing. generally used for young children, close friends, babies, grandparents and female adolescents. in this episode, this also means to call someone in childlike, the K-pop setter called Kageyama as "Tobio-chan" [4:44]. Need to remember that _chan_ is not usually used for strangers or people one has just met though, it'd be considered rude. - _senpai_ is to address someone who is older or senior, mostly in schools, university, dojo, or workplace. in workplace or business environment, _senpai_ also could refer to someone who has more experiences or we look up to or admire more than just a friend. - _sensei_ is to address someone who has achieve some mastery level in education/academic, skills, and knowledge, that commonly refer to the teachers (not only in formal education institution, but could be across fields such musics, arts, and sports), doctors, or politicians. coach also could be included though, Donny-sensei. - _sama_ is the most honorific/formal way to address someone who is in higher rank, also could be the divine way to address the customers or guests in an event (mostly by the announcers)
@Lauvebe4 жыл бұрын
Yup! There are so many honorifics in Japan, which is actually "optional", but you will be considered "rude" if you don't use the proper honorifics for the person you are talking to if it's clear that there is a proper honorific for them. In this anime, the most common honorifics are (CONTAINS REALLY BAD GRAMMAR IM SORRY) : -san = is the title of respect, which usually Hinata uses for his upperclassmen. 'Daichi-san' 'Tanaka-san', Sugawara-san', etc. Sometimes especially in school, people will call the girls with the honorific 'san' even though they are at the same age (or even younger). The closest analogy is "Miss or Mister" I think (?). -senpai = Yes! It means upperclassman. But why Hinata doesn't call Daichi, Tanaka, or Suga with "-senpai"? Because it's usually a honorifics you give to a person you really look up to as an upperclassman. For more casual honorifics, you can just add "-san" to your upperclassmen names. -No honorifics = You will realize this especially between the first years. Hinata calls Kageyama without any honorifics, and vice versa. They also never add any honorifics to Tsukishima's and Yamaguchi's name. The speaker addresses the person as it is. It's usually used in a more familiar manner, like your close-friends, spouses, etc. Or someone who you think "doesn't need any honorifics because he doesn't deserve it from me" XD (I'm sorry for the bad analogy, but It's true). That's why first years in Haikyuu never use any honorifics among themselves. And so do the second years among themselves, and so do the third year among themselves (Suga always calls the captain "Daichi" with any honorifics, and so does Daichi". -chan and kun = My favorite honorifics so far. Haikyuu will use it in the second season! (edit : Thanks guys for correcting me. Yes, Oikawa almost call everyone with -chan. -chan is usually an honorific you use if the speaker finds the person endearing. You use it usually for young children, close friends, babies, grandparents and sometimes female adolescents. Adding -chan makes every name sounds cuter (XD)). For -kun, someone already added it below! I can't think how to describe it in words. Thank you guys! Another thing : The Volleyball Club in this anime calls everyone with their "myouji" (family name) ; Hinata, Kageyama, Tanaka, and so on, except for Daichi. The VBCs for some reason call Daichi by his first name rather than his family name. His family name is "Sawamura", so don't get confused if sometimes people call him "Sawamura". I love Daichi so much. He is my favorite character, and pretty underated if you ask me (which I understand because he doesn't have so many dynamics in this series). But he is a sweetheart, a great, and a dependable leader! I love it when people say they love him!

Hinata actually calls Kageyama with honorifics. Like Kageyama-kun or Yamayama-kun, in teasing way. Iirc he even used Kageyama-san few times.
@Moribax854 жыл бұрын
great explanation, you basically nailed them but, to expand on those you didn't mention or chose to gloss over: -chan/-kun are more terms of endearment than honorifics, chan usually used for females and kun for males (but that's more of a guideline than a rule). You use them with very close friends or people you're really interested in (like calling the girl you like "sweetie"), or to someone who's younger than you -san is not really an honorific, it's in fact the most common suffix used in the japanese language, used both in formal and informal speech, both between strangers and friends, even between brothers -sama is the step up to -san, it indicates respect and is usually given to people of higher rank than you (fun fact: dieties get the -sama honorific) -dono is just below the -sama, but is going out of fashion, and is used mostly in traditional ceremonies, or as a joke. -shi is equivalent to -sama, but is used only in formal writing to indicate a person you don't actually know directly, but only indirectly, that's why it's used mostly in legal or academic writings. then there are words that are not actually honorifics, but can be used as such, like: sensei, literally means professor, teacher or doctor, it indicates a profession that demands respect, but can be used as an honorific behind the name (i.e. Denegawa-sensei)

Man, i'm always SO IMPRESSED by your analysis. On so many levels. In coaching, there is the advices and analysis not only on the form or physical approach but also the mental, team building, etc. That is very unique among reactors, that's already enought to appreciate. But even so, I have this feeling you're a damn good coach. Regarding animation, i don't know anything about that on technical level thus everything you say sounds genius too me, probably i'm overreacting, but still, it's interesting for noobs. And just as "show reactor", you're good too, enjoying and sharing those little appreciative moments, which sometimes we didn't catch or didn't realized why we appreciate them so much, making the show more enjoyable once we have someone else point of view and explanation (why the interaction Hinata/Kageyama is so good, that "little brother" feeling about Hinata, etc.) I read Pandora's comment before you actually said it: "is that a player or a mascot ?" - Yes. At first I thought it was about the setter ("korean idol") and found it funny like that. Then it occured in your reaction and was about the libero, i was laughing so hard. Thanks Pandora, good comment ;) And then you come with the most weird question. "I'm assuming senpai means upperclassmen. Please tell me in comments". ... Yeah. Yeah, that's what it means. Did you ever watch a japanese anime before Haikyuu? Not many I guess. It just makes it even more impressive. Congrats, i'm really enjoying this.
