Volunteer Soldiers Fighting in Ukraine: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 102)

As the conflict in eastern Ukraine continues, thousands of foreign soldiers are joining the fight alongside the pro-Russia separatists of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR). While the majority of these soldiers are from Russia, a growing number of volunteers from western Europe, and even as far as Brazil, are joining the ranks of the separatist forces.
VICE News traveled to eastern Ukraine to meet volunteer fighters from Spain, Brazil, Serbia, and France, to find out what inspired them to take up arms and risk their lives on front lines with the DNR.

Europeans have welcomed all peoples into their lands and have paid the price, yet none of these peoples treat Europeans the same when they are in their lands. Although the Slavic countries have suffered immensely over the last 100 years they remain patriotic and traditional and in time they will restore themselves without the need to sell out their countries to the west, which is why you will see so many foreign volunteers support Russia against the US despite Russia's corruption.

As an American of Serbian heritage I'm not sure where I stand on seeing these volunteers fighting for the DNR. I think it best that all volunteers whether they come from Catholic countries or Orthodox ones to simply go home and let the Ukrainians and Russians sort this out themselves.

Nobody was fighting for Yugoslavia in that war, the real Yugoslavia died in the late 80's due to the rise of Serbian nationalism, and other countries decided that they don't want to live under some form of Serb hegemony.

Croatia as independent state only exited in ww2 as nazi puppet state also know as NDH, try to search on internet. Let me try to explain some ties here that you may not be aware of: 1) Russia was the protectorate of Orthodox Christians for centuries as the biggest and most powerful Orthodox nation. They helped to kick out the Muslim Turks from Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece. There are monuments in those countries to thank Russia for liberating those European Orthodox Christians against the Muslim occupiers from Turkey and those countries have had lots of ties to Russia economically, tourism wise, and generally friendly relations overall. 2) Ukraine is mainly made up of Orthodox Christians in the East and Catholics in the West. The most catholic/pro-Ukrainian part of Ukraine is in the west, territories which were formerly under the Catholic Poland, and were taken by Russia in wars and added to Ukraine. Those are not traditional Ukrainian lands, in fact most of Ukraine is the result of Russian armies adding territory to Ukraine from other nations that they beat in wars. This is how Crimea came to Russia. Russia fought for it, took it, developed it, and populated it. They also fought bloody wars for it, Crimean War and WW2 mainly and thus Russians see it as something they paid for with blood, and Ukrainians did not. 3) The former Yugoslavia was comprised of 7 different nations (as of today) and had many religions, primarily Christian Orthodox (Serbs), Catholics (Croats), and Muslims (Albania/Kosovo)...these religious and ethnic tensions led to the wars over there, and these religious ties have lead the Serbs to stick to Russia and the supposed Croat Catholics mentioned here to stick to Ukraine. On one hand you can say that religion is retarded as it's contributed to these divisions between people, but for many it also unites them. If Russia and Serbs/Bulgarians did not share a religion, a very specific one, perhaps today the territories of Bulgaria/Greece/Serbia would still be under Turkish control. Either way, that's why many Serbs love Russia and support them. I was there this summer and saw "Putin" or Russia hats/shirts/magnets being sold. They're also choosing to leave destroyed buildings in the center of Belgrade perhaps as a reminder of who bombed them.
