Traveling the world doesn’t have to cost a fortune, there are many places where you can volunteer your time for food and a bed. Rob Ormerod has been working with volunteers from around the globe to create an Earthbag community centre in the Andes. This is the story of how over 400 people came together over a 2 year period to live, work and learn together.

Usually someone speaking this slowly makes me lose focus on their talk but...this guy managed it and it was relaxing af. (And to those who think it doesn't relate to the title...he's suggesting you try it, based on his own experience. Then telling you about it. Not every TED is a bulletpoint list.)

His mum's credit card. That says it all. Middle class man. Being middle class give a freedom, us people who were born into poverty CANNOT access to in the same way. Enjoyyyyyy people who have parents to rely on!

I didn't have parents to rely on financially. No credit cards of my grandpa but I worked for my travel and went to volunteer and I have met Rob there. And I understood that many things in life depend on my own decision and clarity, not on blaming others for not having. It was a great adventure, I have met amazing people, including Rob. So I'm sure you can do it as well. It is worth it. And 5 hours a day, high up in the mountains (2600 m above the ocean level) on the building side is a lot of work!! Try it! Open your eyes and your mind and you might find this idea interesting. If not, that's fine. But what is the point of laughing at something you don't understand? Take care.

I want to volunteer too, I want to help others and be a part of something fulfilling. I'm working on getting my Passport and I definitely want to be a part of something that takes me places and gives me a chance to find out what I want to do in life too. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do? This would be my first time traveling out of country and I don't really know what all is available and what I could help with.

Me toooo! I have started googling for places to volunteer. My mom is an architect involved with sustainable design so I hope she will be able to put me in contact with groups like this. Also I know that with a bit of luck and resilience I will be able to travel at very little expense by hitchhiking and asking people for accommodation in exchange for some manual labor or to teach some lessons.

The disapproval he expresses towards his upbringing does not represent the value it brought him. Were it not for his four-year education in product design, the volunteers would not have emailed him asking for his skillset. I guess he disagrees more with the lifestyle, as in the style with which his education was delivered, not the substance of the education. He serves as an example of why getting out into a volunteer setting can help uncover problems that need solving, rather than working complacently making marginal improvements to an already largely functioning system.
