Just on doing my 2008 XC90 D5, and had the reverse problem you had - my old part looks like your new part and vice versa! The weird thing is that, though I haven't installed the new one yet (genuine Volvo part), my engine appears to have holes for both styles of idler assembly! Very strange.

I think you’re right to keep the V70 running. The E3 is better built than the E4. I’ve had both and the earlier one was smoother and gave better mpg.

I reccomend you changing that power steering pulley asap. My friends euro 3 d5 had the power steering pulley destroyed in pieces as the car was running then the auxilary belt made the cam belt snap and the engine got locked up.
