Volvo S60: Pilot Assist 2.0. Traffic jam assist in real-life test :: [1001cars]

The new Volvo S60 can be equipped with Pilot Assist generation two. This system is also available in other Volvo's cars like: V60, S90, V90, XC40, XC60 and XC90. This function works as a traffic jam assist.
When the semi-autonomous Pilot Assist system is activated, acceleration, braking and steering are assisted in order to help the driver comfortably follow the traffic flow within the current lane. With generation two of Pilot Assist the system now offers steering assistance functionality up to 139 km/h and no longer needs a lead car.

I was using driver assist on clear sunny day. The road was dry, double yellow line visible as well as white line. The road was curvy. I had driver assist on and it was engaged. The green wheel was showing to let me know driver assist was engaged. As driver assist was engaged, my Volvo X60 2021, crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic. As a result of that, I no longer can trust driver assist. I have watched several videos that have indicated when driver assist is on, it might be safer to take eyes off road for a bit whether that be to check a text, grab sunglasses, etc. Had I trusted driver assist and taken my eyes off the road for a second, I would have had a head on collusion. Unfortunately, I believe the problem is that driver assist is giving people a false sense of safety/security to take eyes off the road, even for a bit, when driver assist is engaged.

These things are meant to assist rather than takeover and they definitely get it wrong at times if they can't compute the lined properly.

What is the point of a system like this if it keeps disabling itself after a stop?

The system just wants to make sure the driver is still paying attention. Rather than touching the pedal you just touch the cruise control + button. Your hand are supposed to stay on the steering wheel so it shouldn’t be to much work to press the button.

@@gsilves0897 In citroen HIGHWAY DRIVER ASSIST 2.0 Just touch the pedal to accelerate and it takes control, I think it's better this way

This car will stay stoped and not automatically move forward after the car is stoped behind a vehicle in traffic? Even after 3 seconds? All I would have to do is press the button or the gas pedal? The adaptive cruise control in My 2018 Subaru Forrester will disengage after being stopped for over 3 seconds and it will move forward and not stay stopped!?

How does it react when the car in front of you changes lane and the next car you find is stopped? I heard is a common flaw in theese systems to not detect the stopped car and accelerate as it had free way... However, the situation is very similar at 5:19 and the car handled it ok. Also, How did you find its behaviour compared with other brands like mercedes / VAG / BMW / Toyota...? Thanks for your videos, I think they are the most illustrative in KZbin regarding aumatic pilot systems.

Hi! Sometimes ACC has problems with detecting the next stopped car when other car - between us - changed the lane. It is very rare and difficult to repeat unfortunately. The best traffic jam assist? 1st place: BMW 3/8/new X5/X7 2nd place: Audi A6/A7/A8 with Mercedes A Class, the new GLE - in some situations Audi is better than Mercedes, in others Mercedes is better. 3rd place: Previous BMW cars: 5 series, X3 and Volvo system

Pressing the button every time the car stops? That's annoying. I drive an Audi with a similar traffic assist function and I don't have to press that button as often. Perhaps the timeout is configured for longer stops on Audis

Widzę podczas filmu, że pomimo pokazywania ograniczeń prędkości na znakach auto je czasem przekracza (wyższa zadana prędkość). A można zrobić tak by pilot assist maksymalną prędkość dostosowywał też do znaków - czy współdziała z funkcją ASL ? A może czyta dane z nawigacji? Jak to ma np miejsce w grupie VAG, gdzie auto pilnuje też ograniczeń.

when you use PA, the front car stop, you stop. (such as red light) When they start moving, you need to press a bottom to follow? Or the PA will automatically follow up the front car?

Pilot Assist will start moving if the stop took no more than few seconds (around 3-4)

Every time the car in front moves, you have to press the freaking button. So basically you'll probably have to press that same button for more than 100 times for a half an hour heavy traffic jam. That is annoying, it has to be improved.

This is for safety reasons to make sure the driver is paying attention and has their hands on the wheel because if your hands are on the wheel it shouldn’t be too hard to move your thumb a bit

Every system needs to be reactivated after few seconds (sometimes 3, sometimes ~12) with "resume" button or gas pedal. Reason? Law regulations.
