The Vornado VH200- amzn.to/3HhaQvj could save you money this winter if you heat with natural gas. Adding a portable electric heater allows you to shift some of your heating costs to the electric bill. And the Vornado VH200 has received high praise for being able to quickly warm an entire room. The real test will come in January and February- ask me in the comments below how it is holding up then and I will give you an update.

Today, my house was 55 in the morning when I woke up and I turned one on for a few hours and the thermostat read 70 before noon and only dropped down to 65 after 5 or 6 hours. My house is pretty well insulated, so I don't know if everybody will have that same experience. But I saved over $600 in oil last Winter and did it in a way where my electric bill only went up by $20 a month.

@@parristx Trying for more this year. I think I can make it through the Winter on a single tank of oil. I canceled my auto-delivery and I am being very careful to let the Vornados do the bulk of the heating. The oil heats my water. They delivered the oil a month and a half ago and I am close to 1/8th of a tank gone. I might be buying some by February but I usually need a delivery in December.

I started heating my ranch house with a Vornado last year. My house can't have gas so I have always used oil heat. I keep my thermostat at 55 for the most part. A Vornado increases the heat of my ranch by about 10 degrees after a few hours and it also mixes the air so there aren't any drafts. The thing with them is that they are very cheap if you use them to raise the room temperature and turn them off but they can get expensive if you use them 24/7. I tend to turn them off after 2 hours. In the meantime, I heat my body. A heating pad uses 20 to 60 watts. An electric mattress pad uses 60 to 100 watts. An electric throw about 100 watts. An electric blanket uses 200 to 400 watts. I tend to use a heating pad in the Fall and early Spring and an electric mattress pad for an hour before bed and an electric throw on the couch. I saved a whole tank of oil's worth of money last year.

Such good tips- thank you! I also put a small electric heating pad on the foot of the mattress in the winter and just keeping my feet warm helps so much.

@@parristx Yeah heating pads and electric mattress pads are so low watt. They are fabulous. Less than 2 cents a night.

*Install was easy **fireplace.homes** good although I personally had some difficulty with the thermostat I had. Issue was mine though, not realizing that electric heaters couldn't use oil thermostats. Tip: If you are using an external thermostat, run the power to the thermostat, not the unit. Once that was squared away it worked great.*

While the Vornado is on, use the opposite logic to other heating methods. Open every door that you want the room to be warmer. I found out in my office that if there is one Vornado in the main reception area, every office that keeps their door open gets much warmer. It might not be the full 10 degrees warmer but the secondary rooms get maybe 5 degrees warmer because the air circulates so well.

@@muhumedmohamud2356 I own 2 and using both for an hour or two really helps. But unless you have solar panels it is important for people to look up the prices and to be careful. If you have one on high 24 hours a day it would add $123 to the electric bill where I live. 24 hours on low or 12 hours a day on high cuts that in half. In the Fall, I generally only use them for a few hours a day. But right now it is January in New England and it will be a high of 20 degrees a few days next week and those days, I will use it on high for 24 hours. But I only do that on extra cold days and I keep track of my usage. For me, I have only used 1/4 tank of heating oil this year and before the Vornado it would have been 1-1/4 tanks by this time of year.

The problem with these, as with most fan heaters, is when you need to clean them. You can clean the outside with a vacuum cleaner brush attachment so the vents dont get blocked, but you cant get inside to clean the interior and the actual fan blades. The front and back are apparently held together by just 2 deep set screws. But when you remove them it still will not come apart, unless you want to risk breaking the thing. They suggest using compressed air...so now I have to buy a compressor or leaf blower or something ? Give me a break. Dust and fluff and dander building up inside makes the unit less efficient and a safety hazard. They dont want you to be able to maintain anything. Just go out and buy a new one when it fails prematurely because you cant maintain it !

I just took mine apart. It's actually 7 screws. It took me more time than I'd like to admit but they're actually there and then it comes apart easily.

Thank you for the comment, sir. But we must have slightly different models, or versions, because there are definitely only two screws accessible from the outer casing on mine. And it is very difficult to clean accumulated fluff and dirt off, which has accumulated on the fan blades (as it accumulates on any fan blades).

@parristx

It will function anywhere you can plug it in. But I am not sure how it might deal with the high humidity and of course there is the danger issue with electronic devices in the same room where one gets into the water.

Most heaters are safe just use common sense by not placing them to close drapes or furniture. I don't like the infrared heaters but do like the ceramic heat with a fan.

QUIET ! I just read a Consumer Reports review on the 'Quietest' space heaters, and this one is one of their picks. It is double the price of the cheap crap out there, but the cheap crap is so noisy that you have to shout over the fan noise, while this design is whisper quiet.

Yeah it's really quiet because the fan doesn't blow very hard and doesn't seem to put out much heat. I just bought one and if I don't see some results with the temperature I will return it and try something else.

It's because the Vornado "Vortex" models are designed to pass a lot of air over the heating element, much more than let's say with a ceramic heater. Don't be fooled, the amount of heat is exactly the same as with other 1500W electric heaters, but the heating element (and fan) do not have time to get red hot, all the heat is pushed out as it is produced (and quite far which is why most love it so much for large rooms - that ability to maintain an equalized temperature all over). Other types will get very hot, and that is maybe what you are looking for. But that can also be a drawback. As the heat does not get displaced as much, it can get super hot to touch, super cozy next to it, but you start to feel temperature differences as you move away from it. Eventually, both types will effectively heat up a closed room, and with the same amount of electricity. The difference is on how they do it. At some point ,if a room is just too large for 1500W of heat neither will be sufficient, but I think the Vornado does an amazing job at spreading the 1500W of heat is produces over an area.
