Love the three position safe. Not as much for the middle position as the fact that it's a firing pin block. You could possibly hit the rear of the firing pin and not have a round go off. Can the same be said a tang or side safety that blocks the sear??

I have a 3rd year production, 1937 Winchester model 70 in 220 swift that I got from my grandfather. I took it out for a long walk this last hunting season and let it eat a 100 pound hog. First centerfire rifle I ever shot as a kid and absolutely love it. It has a peep site on it.

My Cabela's 50th Anniversary M70 in 270 is by FAR my favorite rifle out of all I own. I have sold and moved on from every other brand. But I have wanted this rifle for a long time and now that I have it, is crazy. I never forgot reading Jack O'Conner in a magazine in my Grandpa's office. A goat hunt that I have dreamed about doing since I was six. This is the rifle that I always just go back to when I need a rifle that shoots. I have all the new stuff, but hunting season, I keep going back to my Model 70

My first bolt deer rifle I purchased in 1982 was a Ruger M77 in .30-06 because it shoots, looks like, and operates like a Win model 70. It has the Mauser action and claw extractor, but with a tang safety. Forged barrel and beautiful walnut stock with cut checkering. Still hunt with it. Gun writers bad mother the trigger, but it has 4 pound pull but shoots sub MOA in 168gr bullets and 1 Moa in everything else. Loaded up about 200 rounds using military surplus LLC brass I still have and use.

My favorite rifle is my M70 “Alaskan” in 338 Win Mag. Excellent craftsmanship with high quality delivery. A rifle to last the ages. Also, all rifles from the M70 series come glass bedded. Excellent features for any hunter that wants the rifle of a lifetime. That rifle has a a DG(Dangerous Game) ready model made with express sights for the backcountry, Alaska, and even Africa in the 375 H&H when things get western. Quick detach rings and a 1-6x20 scope and your ready for anything from whitetail to brown bear and even “Black Death”. You can even get these in 416 Rem Mag and 458 Wincher Magnum. Love the M70 rifle system. Great podcast! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was sent back to wisconsin as a gift to the uncle of a US soldier that was stationed there. It was owned by that uncle until about 1997 when I purchased it from him because he retired from hunting. Love that rifle. Still have the Germany mount and scope, but I installed a vortex on it now.

@ not at all, but just make sure you give the rifle a good once-over. Does the bolt lock up tight? Is the floor plate flush? How is the bluing on the barrel? (I believe for a period after the change, the bluing may have been sprayed on, but I’m not 100% on that). You have to remember, during this era, ALL of American manufacturing was going through this change to almost complete automation. Ryan waxed a bit nostalgic on how guys in the Pre-‘64 days would have their files and calipers, hand fitting parts. Well, what if that guy was on a bender the night before, and had the DT’s the next day? The early Post-‘64’s COULD have production problems, but that doesn’t make them ALL bad.

I once read the Mauser action on the Model 70 was a carryover from WWI rifles that were far less likely to jam under battlefield stress. Knowing the feature was proven and very much appreciated, Winchester decided to make it available on their premier sporting rifle.

I have a Model 70 Westerner chambered in .30-06. I once sold it to a good friend under the condition if he wanted to sell it, I would have first chance. I found out a couple years later he had sold it to a gentleman that was an over the road truck driver. I knew the truck driver but had no way to contact him. I was at a gas station several years later and miraculously ran in to the truck driver and pleaded my case that I would like to buy the rifle back. He was hesitant but I now have it back in my possession. And my good friend to this day still asks if I’d sell it to him again 😂

Great video on one of the all time greats. I have my grandad’s pre-64 Model 70 Featherweight in 30.06. He hunted extensively with it and used 165 Partitions in front of a max load of IMR 4350. I’ve used it and yes it is very sentimental. I’m glad you acknowledged the 270 and its capabilities since it goes hand in hand with the model 70. I have a Model 70 Featherweight in 270 I bought a few years before they closed the New Haven plant. It too is a great shooter with a near max load of IMR-4350. The rifle has been used by myself and others to harvest mulies, pronghorn and whitetails with 130 grainers leaving the barrel at just over 3000 FPS. Again, great video.

I hunt with a very well worn Model 70 I purchased in 1995 for my elk rifle. It is a DBM model (detachable box magazine) in 300 Winchester. It is quite heavy but it fits me like a good pair of jeans. I’ve wanted to get a more modern rifle but it’s hard to let go of that gun, that weight helps when it comes to shooting but sucks to carry up mountains day after day. I do love that gun! Oh and Ron Spomer did a video awhile ago where he got to see a few of Jack O Connor’s and shoot one of his model 70’s.

I love watching both of you banter. I close my eyes and listen as your listeners would without the presence of you tube. You guys sound great on the radio, it is a different show I also admire the early 1900's American accent and radio. It is true by the way about picking up speech from where you are. I was in school in England in the late sixties and during the trip home (me in my school boy clothes) when a charming older lady sitting next to me in the plane said in her upper English "So master Thomas is this your first time to the states?" "I replied no mum I was born here in the state of Indiana and we are returning home to California" She remarked I would have never known child" "Did you enjoy your stay with us? " I said 'It was fantastic! I am looking forward to the return. I will miss my friends till then" we had tea and talked the rest of the flight. Did you see it on the radio? Again the way you spoke as if you were on the radio just then took me back how accents can be picked up especially when your young. Thanks for that trip down memories lane. 🙂

My dad hunted with a Model 70 Alaskan chambered in .338 Win Mag from when it came out in 1958 until his death in 2016. He also had one chambered in .264 Winchester Mag. His dad was also a huge fan of the model 70 as well and owned several in .338 Win Mag, .300 Win Mag and other calibers. Other than a Sako Forester .243 that my dad had I don't recall either of them owning anything else.

One of my favorite rifles in the case - my dad’s old 270. Fun fact : his neighbor “ported” the barrel. Meaning he drilled holes in the end of the barrel, and offered my dad a new barrel if he messed it up. It’s been an accurate deer slaying machine for years!

Definitely need a cartridge talk on the 338-06. I’ve got one built on a ‘98 Mauser action by Iver Henricksen. It was only by coincidence that I was able to obtain it. My choices for a model 70 are all pre 64 style. 270 Winchester, 30-06 and 300 H&H. I’ll probably never be able to afford any of those the way things are going. I do have an immaculate 1952 Remington 721 BDL Deluxe in 300 H&H with it’s original K4 Weaver. I “stole” it when It was consigned by an estate to a local gun shop. None of the deceased’s grandchildren wanted it. They only wanted his more “modern” stuff. The package came with a full box of the old Remington Kleanbore 220 grain factory loads, 193 new new unfired cases, one set of RCBS dies, one set of Herters dies and one set of Herters 250 Savage dies. They probably didn’t know what a 250 Savage is. After a short negotiation the total outrageous price for the package was $550.00 plus 8% sales tax😂 I sold the Remington factory ammo to a cartridge collector for $100.00. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

The Model 70 is by far, by far my favorite rifle. Probably due to the time I grew up and started hunting. There was the Model 70 pushfeed or the Remington 700. I know there was more brands but the Browning A bolt was brand new, the Savage 110, to be kind, were junk. Then you had the ever expensive Weatherby Mark 5. So I formed my early decision by picking the Model 70. I still make sure to take one out at least once every hunting season. Still my favorite!!

One thing about the pre 64 model 70’s that is different that I have learned in reloading is that Winchester didn’t put free bore in the barrel like all other rifles and you can easily get the bullets seated to the optimum distance from the lands and that’s why I think they shoot so well

I've got 2 model 70's. The first I got from my uncle. It was leaning in his closet collecting dust. He asked me to sight it in for him. It needed some work, and I ended up buying it from him for a discount. It looks like a newer production rifle chambered in 270 Weatherby. Which is weird to me, I didn't think Winchester would chamber their rifle in a Weatherby cartridge, but is got all the factory barrel markings. The other rifle is one I picked up. It's a new production rifle in 270 Winchester.

Ha! Those post 64 M70's... I fell for the myth that they were junk myself, until one of my mentors, an "ol timer" who had one of every pre 64 except the 7.65 Argentine, sat me down, put aclothespin on my nose, and threatened to never sell me another treasure till I actually shot his 1966 vintage 270. The rifle, ugly as warmed over dung, with a Leupold 2-7, and Nosler 130's, shot benchrest type groups. He made me hold the rifle upside down, tilted every way imaginable, and it fed like shite going through a goose, and never lost a round. He explained that Winchester M70s have always, always been built with forged receivers and bolts, the pre64 barrels used a cone breach, push feed guns,a flat breach. Until FN took over, always had that super simple trigger with everything in the open that any Hammer Mechanic could adjust. I like em. Oh, and the 270. Maybe it'd be a bit more palatable if you think of it as an "Americanized 7mm" named to sell to Americans. Let Remington stumble round in the mud pushing "mm" cartridges that nobody really likes but are excellent rounds with shitty names.

Each pre-64 M70 started with a six-pound steel billet and was individually machined in a Bridgeport mill. Those are the tooling marks you see. The barrels had integral sight mounts. The front sight is not brazed. They were machined into the barrel. Although they were Winchester's premium rifle, a Model 52 target rifle actually cost about $10 more in 1936.

The front sight was not brazed on until later, meaning like 1954.. Prior to that the front sight was simply metal left behind when shaping the barrel profile. Meaning the front sight was integral with the barrel. A real touch of class only found today on custom one- off rifles.

I would love to get a model 70 in 270 from 1962 . The year i was born and the model 70 was my dads favorite rifle. I have his in my gun safe that I bought him when I got my first job back in 1978

I just bought one last month that is like brand new and got it cheaper then the new stock standard Winchester and it has everything stock on it even the but plate and in 270 win. The only thing I am going to do is put a limbsaver pad on it. Being a 60+ rifle collector I have owned many pre64’s and have given many to friends of mine as gifts that always wanted one but could never afford one!

Another fun episode - thanks Mark & Ryan. You guys bring up a point that my gun & hunting buddy have I noticed about the decline of the .338, .375, and other medium bore-and-up cartridges. The obvious culprits: generally increased recoil, ammo advancements in smaller caliber cartridges, declining use by dwindling hunters, but also a big one that’s overlooked: the legal minimum for African countries (even though 99% of folks will probably never go there, that’s a another mental block for “one-gun” subscribers.) I’ll argue that’s a big part of why .358’s have such a hard time catching on. In regard to your South Africa episode, would you guys consider addressing the caliber restriction in another one? From seeing content about the 8.6 BLK and others, it would be worthwhile to clarify that law. Thanks again!

Got a killer deal on my older m77 stainless Hawkeye 338 WM when I wasn’t really shopping and I am so glad I did. I don’t understand why it’s not more popular. I’d argue it’s preferable recoil to the 300wm I sold years ago and 225 ttsx does impressive things to Sitka blacktail here on the rock.

I have my fathers 1962 m70 24 inch heavy barrel in 243 AI. Still the most comfortable reliable and accurate rifle I have owned. With an old school Tasca 3 x 9 scope.

I still hunt with my dads old mod 70 made in 1946. It's chambered in 270 and is mounted with an older zeiss 2-10. It's an absolute tack driver

As PH Capstick said any changes to the old rifles and calibers would be like finding the True Cross and then sending it out to be refinished.

I own one of the new production model 70's an all weather SS in 7mm Rem mag. She's a shooter. It likes those 140gr SST'S and 162gr Eld-x bullets. It's 1/2" to 3/4" all day. I've killed several deer with it. I do like that action. I would like to get a true pre 64. I also wouldn't mind getting one in a smaller cartridge. I eventually want to keep my current model 70 in 7mm Rem as more of a big game or long-range rig. I'd like to get the Featherweight in a 7mm-08 or the 6.5 Creedmoor or .243 win. Something I can use for whitetails and yotes, specifically. I'd like to get a true pre-64 in a classic cartridge with period correct glass.

I’ve got a 1952 featherweight in .308 and it shoots 130gr ttsx’s like a laser. Fantastic firearms and Ryan doesn’t know what he’s talking about when he says that pre-64 featherweight’s don’t look good.

For Ryan: You can avoid spending stupid money on a euro Tikka 3-pos safety by just getting a Sako 85 trigger and milling/grinding out the spot on a tikka where the boot release button would be. The triggers are nearly identical

Im with Ryan on the fact that most new guns dont get me excited. My collection is 90% 80's and older, 60% 60's and older. You dont see them often, but I just can't pass up an old Herters bolt action.
