I like that term 'Modular Sporting Rifle', a perfect use of the proper nomenclature. Many call ARs Modern Sporting Rifles, but they are no longer so modern at about 60 years old, but they are indeed very modular, which is the beauty of the AR platform. A very realistic description.
@judgegarry Жыл бұрын
There's been very little improvement in gas operated semi-automatics beyond the MSR platform that could warrant dropping the "modern" classification. Sure, there's lots of other variants, but, IMHO, none that would take the top of the heap claiming the Stoner design is "outdated" and no longer current... Just a thought, not criticism, mind you. (>;
@StevenRAssmann-tb7ty Жыл бұрын
AR type rifles are much more modern then the bolt or lever action rifle since those designs are over 100 years Old. With the Picatinny rails and all of the changes made since the sixty’s, they are modern sporting rifles.

Good stuff! On the reversing the mount to bring the scope to you, one common issue with that is that the charging handle is right under the scope tail and it be hard to grab to pull back, on ARs anyways, some other rifles with different styles might not have that issue.

I’ve been looking into the Burris P.E.P.R. Scope mount as a way to mount a red-dot above an AR10 rifle for close-up target acquisition. Is this mount a decent choice, or should I hold off for something more “quality”? My thought process is using this rifle for hog hunting, where the primary optic would be a scope at minimum 2.5x10, and that the red dot would be for the hopefully-rare instance of a close-up charging hog.

What is best position of the rings if the cross-bar doesn't exactly fit the picatinny slot? Toward the back of the pic or toward the front? I would think toward the back, since they sort-of act like a recoil lug for the scope helping eliminate the movement potential of the scope when firing heavy loads like 300 winmag.

Great video. Very informative. I just bought a Remington 700 26 inch barrel in 300 Win Mag. I have little to no long distance shooting experience but that is the goal behind buying this rifle. I would start with just long distance targets until I got confident enough to hunt long distance without risk of injuring an animal that I do not kill. I am thinking I want a scope with a high magnification around 20 but anything up to 25+ would work and no less than 16 power. I would like to keep the price around $700 for the scope, rings and mounting plate but willing to go a little higher if there is a scope that will better serve my purpose. Any set up(s) you can suggest? I see mounting plates saying 0 MOA, 2 MOA, 4 MOA. I understand MOA when adjusting my scope when sighting my rifle in but not on the mounting plate. What is the difference between the 0, 2, 4 MOA plates?
@judgegarry Жыл бұрын
In case you didn't figure it out, or to inform viewers: A 20 MOA base is generally used for shooting 500 - 1000 + yards depending on the scope and caliber (At 100 yards, one MOA is about 1" [slightly more] )The scope mount cants downward at 20 MOA, which will allow you to zero your gun at a greater distance. This prevents your scope from reaching the limit of elevation adjustment. I would recommend zeroing a rifle with a 20 MOA rail at 200 yards Good luck

It frustrates the he'll out of me that modern plastic stocks don't come with plastic adjustable cheek pieces! Very few come with a comb high enough (and I've never found one too high). On a wooden gun I'd rather the comb be too high so I could take the excess off myself and re-oil/revarnish. If you want an integrated cheek piece you basically have to go to a chassis. Very frustrating.

On a gun like that you'll want something with a nice, forgiving eyebox and good eye relief to make up for the fact that it will probably have to sit up a bit higher than is ideal just due to the design of the receiver and the stock of the rifle, so we'd recommend checking out something like our Crossfire II 2-7x32 Rimfire, or the Viper HS 2.5-10x44, the Viper being the better of the two by quite a great deal, but also a fair bit more expensive.

It took me a sec to really understand why one (invariably) needs a cantilever type mount on an AR-15. Notice on the AR-15 with cantilever mount, and the Ruger American with standard mount, in BOTH CASES, the rear ring is just at the front of the trigger guard. Thus, scope APPEARS to be mounted farther forward, but as a matter of length of pull, you need that cantilever just to put the scope in the same relative position as the scope on the Ruger American without cantilever.

The most typical and problematic concern is a scope height which will support a muscularly relaxed stockweld where the entire weight of head can rest on the stock while yielding perfect sight alignment. Unless this condition is achieved consistent sight alignment will not be possible resulting in angular error which increases with distance.

@Vortex Optics What cantilever would you recommend for a Rise Armament 1121XR 6.5 Creedmoor, topped with a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 riflescope? What are the main differences between each of the cantilever mount options? And lastly, I might want to get into long range shooting sometime in the future, but do I really need to spend the extra $$$ on getting a precision cantilever? Or could a Sport/Pro cantilever be steady, sufficient, or reliable enough for the lower kick of a 6.5? (I also plan to use this gun hunting as well, so I prefer to keep it on the lighter side when possible.)
@VortexOpticsUSA4 жыл бұрын
The pro cantilever would be perfect. All of them are plenty reliable and steady for a 6.5, the main thing you get as you upgrade from sport to pro to precision is the overall quality and precision tolerances that go into making the mounts themselves. For someone looking for the ultimate in precision machined rings that are perfectly matched to one another, the precision cantilever mount can't be beaten. That build quality does help it in reliability on heavy recoiling guns, or in harsh uses, but it's unlikely you'll be testing those limits with what you describe. The Pro is a great choice as well, plenty durable and reliable and at about half the cost. Many of us here use all three depending on the situation. For your particular application, the Pro seems perfect.

It really depends on how far you're planning to shoot. For most practical shooting applications with an AR chambered in 5.56, you won't need a 20 MOA base to shoot out to 600 yards. If you plan on shooting super long range, you're probably going to want to go to a higher magnified optic. Let us know what kind of shooting you'll be doing and we'll be able to help recommend what kind of mounting solution is best for you.

Hi, what would you recommend for the best mount for the vortex 3-9x40 scope
@1outdoortradition1377 жыл бұрын
Vortex, this video was super helpful and brought up a question at the same time (hopefully it's answered here because I don't have a FB). I recently bought my first scope, Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x44, that I'm looking to mount on my Savage Axis .30-06. What recommendation would Vortex have on which rings to purchase for this combination?

1OutdoorTradition Not a Vortex product but I have used and am very happy with DNZ Game Reaper on a Savage model 10. www.dnzproducts.com/product/game-reaper-savage-2/

Would the Pro Series/Viper rings in a "medium" height fit a weaver mount for the same Savage Axis .30-06? Or is a Picatinny recommended instead?

I'm getting a Mossberg Patriot Predator 6.5 Creedmoor and a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x50 Adjustable Objective Rifle Scope. What would be the preferred height from the Keystone Scope rings- 1.275, .990 or .850? I'm really looking at getting this right the first time without getting the wrong rings. Thanks!
@VortexOpticsUSA4 жыл бұрын
It would depend on how they do their measurements and what type of rail system you are using. If they measure from the top of the rail to the center of the ring the .990 should work fine.

Hey Jim - thanks for reaching out! For that setup, we would recommend going with a 1-piece Picatinny rail and a set of the 30 mm Pro Series Rings - Medium (PR30-M) for that setup.

Do you ever go medium ring in the rear and high ring in the front to achieve cantelever?
@VortexOpticsUSA6 жыл бұрын
No - That actually wouldn't get you a cantilever, either. A cantilever is something like this - www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-pro-cantilever-riflescope-ring-mount-1 - The mount is attached to the rail at a point behind where it pushes the rings out to. Usually used on AR-15's or other similar platforms, it allows you to mount the scope to the top rail of the receiver, but push the scope out further beyond the top rail to get the scope far enough from your eye for proper eye relief. This is necessary because AR receivers aren't very long so they run out of room and you don't want to have any portion of your mounting system on a handguard. What you're referring to would cause a very severe impingement to the scope's tube as you would have two straight-walled rings at different heights trying to clamp a straight scope tube in, which would require serious bending/breaking. Hope this helps!

What's disadvantage of mounting my viper ps gen 2 on Bergara hmr. using Tally Remington 700 rings directly into drilled tapped receiver.
@VortexOpticsUSA2 жыл бұрын
You would obviously save weight going that route. The biggest disadvantage to going with rings that go directly to the receiver is you lose the flexibility of setting the proper eye relief. With a 1-piece rail and rings, you can move the rings on the rail and slide the scope in the rings as needed to find the proper eye relief and keep the rings centered on the scope tube body. With 2 rings that attach directly to the receiver, the only adjustment you have is sliding the scope forward or aft.

Just bought your guys diamondback tactical scope. What scope height would you recommend for a ruger m77 .270 win?
@VortexOpticsUSA6 жыл бұрын
The Ruger mount is a bit funky and exclusive to the M77, so you'll need to use their rings (30mm - medium height). You could also go to a weigatinny rail (if you insisted on using a more precision ring set, like the Precision Matched Rings in our line). If you chose the latter, we'd recommend a set of our medium height 30mm Pro Rings which you can find here: vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-pro-series-30mm-riflescope-rings-medium-height

The cantilever should just clear it in 99% of applications unless yours has an unusually tall handguard or something. Thanks!

Love vortex. One issue. On my AR I have a crossfire 3-9x40 scope, and the cantilever mounts with 2" offset. Wne I go to boresight, its so low, it maxxes the elevation out before I can even go to the range and hit paper. Am I doing something wrong? My optic lands pretty much even with the charging handle, my rifle is a Ruger SR-556. Hope you can help, im hoping I dont have to buy another set of rings...
@VortexOpticsUSA6 жыл бұрын
Hey Pat - what distance are you trying to boresight at? If you're boresighting at super close range, you probably aren't allowing enough distance for your barrel and scope to settle on a POA and POI. We'd recommend looking down the barrel and boresighting the old fashioned way by matching your scope to what you see through the barrel at, say, 100 yards or so. Let us know if that doesn't solve your problem and we'll get back to the drawing board!
@patfuller67276 жыл бұрын
Hey...Thank you for the response. I spoke to a tech today and he advised the old fashioned bore sight tip, so I'll try it. Thank you, you guys have good products and better service! PS, I was trying to boresight too close. I used a laser at night, and it worked better. I'll zero out the adjustments and try the old school approach this weekend. Thanks again!
