@lizzied33682 жыл бұрын
Homelessness covers many different situations from families that face eviction or foreclosure with no recourse to youth who have left or been forced out of a bad situation to people with a variety of illnesses. Suppose we wanted to solve the problem for families by providing small two bedroom apartments. IF you could build at $100/sq ft and IF the av. unit is 500 sq ft. only and IF you can get the land donated by the city or the govt. or some other donor then each unit would cost 50K and you could build 800 units. More likely it would cost twice that, or more, and you could build 400 units for $40 M. If you go for single bedroom+ bath only, no cooking facilities , which might be a strategy for single youth, veterans, etc., you might be able to get shelter built for as little as 20-25K/unit (but don't count on it) and 40M would pay for as many as 2000 bedrooms. Neither would make a dent in the homeless problem in LA, which has been in the 40,000 range for several years now. HOWEVER - homelessness costs might decline if we could get people sheltered and cities might actually save money building housing for the (chronically) homeless rather then leaving them to suffer (medical costs are a big part of the public costs of allowing people to be without shelter.)
