again, i think that delilahs misty step was actually the spell far step. She teleported a lot farther than 30 feet (far step has a range of 60 feet) and she teleported multiple times in quick succession while also casting other spells (far step allows you to do it every turn as a bonus action without restricting your ability to cast other spells).

i barely know anything about DND, but i was surprised to learn that mrs. briarwood was a regular ol' wizard class. her visual style was so specific that i thought she might have been a necromancer or something. one of the things that keep me away from trying DND is that, as a beginner, all the combat rules feel really restrictive when i just want to play around with specific character design i have in mind. CR/VM getting creative with how spells and actions are expressed narratively is exactly what i like to see in roleplay games.

I agree with artistic liberties on dominate person since the spell can only affect one creature and upcasts for longer duration. I appreciate that he didn't use dominate until after the suits were downed since both take concentration. I like the hex idea since it provides extra damage on a hit and his shots tend to be more destructive when his eyes turn.

In the original stream the animated armors were not activated via a spell, but are independent and continued attacking even after his death. Here they were taken care of beforehand so I don't know.

7:25 Two things: 1) Imprisonment is a 9th level spell, plus it does not trap the players in such a way (it can entomb them beneath the earth, chain them, lock them in a maze, or put them to sleep, plus it only works on one creature, not a radius that can trap creatures). 2) This spell is most likely akin to the 7th level spell Forcecage, which acts exactly like in the show. The only caveat is that Forcecage is invisible, but it's hard to animate invisible things effectively and stylishly (as seen with the Unseen Servant).

I do think it could be Wall of Force or Resilient Sphere. For it to be Forcecage, Gilmore would have to spend 1,5k on ruby dust. Also, Forcecage is not a concentration spell, so Gilmore would not be able to free the party at his will once the spell is cast.

correction, the massive light spell that keyleth casts is sunbeam. the spell 'daylight' is, oddly, not actually sunlight. whereas the sunbeam spell actually DOES emite sunlight, as a concentration spell. and it DOES allow the caster to fire beams of sunlight on their turn, which we see keyleth do later.

I agree with your assessment of Astral Projection being the reason and spell used to get Pike into the Briarwood fight. However I would add that I believe the Projection and reason for the power uptick is this whole entire sequence was due to a spell cast by Pike in the Temple which I believe to be Divine Intervention...this is why it is the Everlight's energy and power level being used instead of her own.

Pike most likely didn't heal the group with prayer of healing instead it would be mass cure wounds a 5th level which has a after time frame rather then 10 minutes it is just one action also considering she healed 7 people instead of 6 she most likely hit one of them with a healing word using spell driver a matt mercer original feat which allows you to cast both a bonus action and regular action spell in one turn while not official wotc stuff this is matts world so we'll let it slide.

In campaign 1, it didn't require a feat to cast a non-cantrip in the same turn as a bonus action spell, everyone could do it. At some point after the double-fireball incident, Matt limited it to one of the spells being lvl2 or lower. But yes, Mass Cure Wounds was a spell Pike regularly had prepared, and its 1 Action cast time fits the narrative. Good call. Probably they just allowed it to affect 7 targets, not intending one of them to be a separate cast of Healing Word, taking artistic liberty with adapting 5e spells to the screen because that mechanical limit isn't narratively interesting. On screen, Pike heals the party with a spell, done. Spreading the same pool of healing across 1 extra target (meaning less healing for each target) would be basically fine in terms of game balance, too.

In pathfinder it does, and as pointed Vox Machina had a lot of homebrew to not destroy the table during transition of systems. Fighting against Vampires was probably part of the game since the PF era, and Matt didnt want / didnt remember to change the encounter and take into acount the spell he took for granted during the Boss Fight wouldnt work anymore.

I could've sworn Pike used Guiding Bolt (without the advantage effect) and maybe sacred flame during the Briarwood fight. Both visually in her radiant style of magic. I may be mistaken though.

The final attack she did on Sylas before running to help Scanlan looked a lot more like flames than bolts or beams. It looked a much more impressive that a simple cantrip, but we saw she got a lot of extra power in her astral form.

@@hhylobates4098 On the stream, Pike used Flame Strike (5th) as one of her go-to combat spells. 4d6 each of Radiant and Fire damage in a 20ft AoE, but for animation they might have narrowed it. But I don't remember the animations in LoVM well enough to say if that's what she did.

Tasha's Cauldron of everything gave Druids access to cone of cold, but this book came out 3 years after campaign 1 ended for Critical Role. But if we look into Pathfinder spells, Druids there can learn Cone of Cold and since this was originally a Pathfinder game (as you pointed it) it is likely that Matt Mercer allowed for spell lists to be expanded as a result.

That fire-breathing feat by Scanlon was more like the wizard spell burning hands. One level lower than dragon's breath with the same 3d6 damage and hamstrung by the fire only weakness that potion displayed. I know because I'm currently playing a 7th level wizard in a 5e Eberron campaign and have both on my spell list. Also, not sure if this just a house rule for my DM's table but he's said that I can sacrifice a spell scroll instead of a spell slot if I'm unable to cast the spell otherwise, including having a teleport scroll in my back pocket as a quick evaluation method to get my entire 5 player party out of some fights. I'm thinking that Gilmore bartered his way into having a supply of a half dozen of those imprisonment scrolls, sacrifice one to store the spell in the mentioned glyph of warding, meaning all he'd need is any material components listed in the imprisonment spell.

Great point about the scroll it very possible for Gilmore to have a magic item like that to account for any spell he could need. Interesting point about the burning hands but the Scanbo episode was heavily pulled from the original stream which makes it the easiest one to figure out what spells are being used. I checked Episode 31 of the original stream to confirm and it is a Potion of Fire Breath which I think I called Dragon's Breath which is my bad. I use player slang sometimes when I should be using mechanical terms which is not helpful for the video. Thank you for the comment I hope I answered/cleared up my reasoning for the spell in the video. Also thank you for the insight into magic items I don't use scrolls often so I may have overlooked this.

I thought Delilah was a Warlock and that her casting Witch Bolt was actually her casting Eldritch Blast, but it looks like I was wrong... In the animated series, I think Witch Bolt and Eldritch Blast would have a very similar, practically indistinguishable, appearance... Unless the Warlock casting Eldritch Blast was a Celestial subclass, then I imagine that rather than their Eldritch Blast having a black lightning look to it, it would look white or light blue...

Except for the fact that eldritch blast is the equivalent of a bullet (cast, flys to target and hits) whereas witch bolt is a beam that attaches to the target (because you can just auto deal more damage on subsequent turns, as long as they stay within range)

I think we can actually conclude that Percy was using hex because you'll notice that people he shoots while his eyes are black like that take SIGNIFICANTLY more damage than normal with parts of their body exploding off of them from a single shot of the pepperbox that normally leave very normal bullet wounds.

In order for a glyph of warding to store a level 9 spell (imprisonment), it would also need to be ninth level. And one can't cast 2 level 9 spells in a row without some sort of spell storage Its most likely wall of force; they are contained within a spherical floating indestructible containment spell.

9:42 I too originally thought that this spell could have been Revivify... but after a second thought maybe it was the Reincarnate spell? The spell's flavor says that the spell forms another body for the soul to inhabit... but taking into account that Cassandra's body was not badly injured other than a carotid severance leading to bleedout, maybe it was as simple as adding the cost component to the body to close the wound and then as a DM auto-selecting human as the race of the reincarnation, no fuss, no muss. Then again, Achim's razor, right? A simple Cure Wounds to make the moment even more dramatic, as you said!

Little late, but Revivify is actually a druid spell, it was added to their spell list in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, which is logical, given they get other revivification magic.

Ok...as a person who's played D&D for literal decades from 3.5 to pathfinder, to 5e, and even a little bit of 4th I have to say well done but for a few things. 1) I think the spell Keylith cast upon Cassandra was HEAL and not Cure wounds, a 6th level spell that is within her power to perform, and would explain the far more dramatic visuals. 2) Cone of Cold it IS available to Druids. 3) I believe the spell Gilmore most likely used with the Glyph of Warding was Forcecage, which can form a perfectly enclosed area...at least in previous edditions

In Tasha’s, the Druid spell list was expended to include Revivify. While in-game was before Tasha’s, I’d still bet Keyleth cast it and not Cure Wounds in the show.

Druids can indeed cast "revivify". They also can cast "cone of cold"...which is in fact what she casts in the scene shown.

Based on what they had at the time of stream, druids did *not* have Revivify or Cone of Cold, as those spells were added in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, which was post campaign 1. It was in fact cure wounds and Ice Storm she cast. She wasn't actually dead in stream, on top of the fact if it were Revivify it would have taken a lot more to bring her back, due to Matt's rulings for revival spells. Also, the components are completely wrong, there was no diamond there. Although Cure Wounds doesn't have any component's, generally in the show they may have modified that for Keyleth's casting as she's not great with healing spells in the show. With Ice Storm, it was recreating the scene in which Keyleth managed to set a record for most damage dealt in a single turn, by casting Ice Storm. She hit *a lot* of undead with it dealing over 150 damage in a single cast.

Most of the spell in the breakdown are my best guess based on class, spell used by the character on stream, and artistic design switch is up to the creators and means it could realist be anything. Some spells are confirmed by the events of the stream and the Critical Role team like when Keyleth destroys Sylas that spell is Sunbeam for sure. However cleric's traditional can't use Sunbeam nor can Pike's subclass and she was never know to use the spell ether. Searing Light is a Pathfinder spell which the original game was converted form and is confirmed to be a spell Pike used during stream. Don't get me wrong you can totally be right as their design team takes liberty with the source material so a lot of this spell could be anything but this was the line of question I followed to come to Searing Light and not Sunbeam for the video. She's 100% Wizard, subclass necromancer. She's an acolyte of Vecna, but doesn't AFAIK gain her power from him. (I'm caught up on all 3 campaigns, and the one-shots).

In the campaign, she was just a high level wizard. She was a powerful wizard before she ever interacted with the Whispered One and the only major thing he actually gave her was the ability to brig back Sylas as a vampire after his death iirc
