The HR also has much more stout connecting rods then the de and rev-up, which makes the HR a favorite for the boosted guys who don't wan't to invest in a engine building. The HR is better by almost every measurable metric, though the cost to swap them into a Z or G that originally came with a DE or Rev-Up is absurd. You can build a DE or Rev-Up for around the same cost as a swap, in some cases, and give yourself something that will hold 2 or 3 times the power of a stock HR. We specialize in custom VQ engine building and boosting, so feel free to hit me up if you have any questions.
@z-ro34
@z-ro34 5 жыл бұрын
That's 100% right. Honestly, the worst part about a swap is getting the supporting parts to go with it, whether it's the harnesess, the labor to wire everything, mounts, transmission adapters. It's why I've abandoned a VR30 swap because building a bottom end for a VQ37 is way cheaper and will hold way more power than what i'm after.

Eddie Dugan...I have a 2004 Maxima 3.5 motor. Currently running 207,435 miles on it. So far? Runs quite well. I cleaned the two VVT units (They sit on the top of the engine on both banks). The cleaning did the job of allowing the engine to run much smoother. One can buy new ones but I'm cheap. And cleaning them were real easy to do. Two bolts to remove them. Once the plenum is off for the firewall side. Did the timing chain at around 80,000. Water pump while the timing cover was off. And replaced the chain. It really didn't need replacement but since I had to change out the chain guide (made of hardened plastic I would guess) I did it. I rebuilt the care from the wheels up. This maxima was sitting in a garage for almost 6 years. In real good condition. In closing....I really like Nissan products. I've had my share of headaches working on this car but once I got a handle on it? I'm ok with it. Good luck with your wheels bud.

if you plan on keeping internals stock, buy a hr. if you want to build the engine, de. the cost difference alone between the two cars and you can almost build the DE to hold 600+hp, reliably.

alfred rodriguez no way man. I’ve been both routes lol. The hr and VHR are a better motor for big power. And you have to spend a LOT on a De for everything forged versus buying a used bottom end off a g37 or 370 for cheap... then it only takes a few forged parts to get to the same power..
@SilverStackers
@SilverStackers 5 жыл бұрын
Gordon A so your saying stock bottom end will hold 1k? Ok, what was your build on the DE? Forged rods, pistons, bullet girdle, billet oil pump, sleeved,etc? You might need a few more parts, like the girdle, but nothing crazy.
@gordona7081
@gordona7081 5 жыл бұрын
alfred rodriguez Mybad I don’t think I wrote that clearly enough. Most built DE’s aren’t pushing 1000whp. And if so ur talking about a LOT of money. Most built DE’s are 650-800whp. My point was that if you’re starting from scratch, the better choice is the HR. Since most people aren’t ganna go from a 280whp car to a 1000whp car. If ur trying to do that then MAYBE the fully built DE is the cheaper option, but that’s also assuming you have zero draw backs... the HR motor on the other hand is good for about 500whp reliably as long as u don’t have an already worn out motor. If that motor blows, you can buy a VHR bottom end and bolt it right up (no ecu or wiring harness swap). That right there is good for about 600-700whp. From there, only a FEW forged parts are needed to handle 800+ whp. Which in my scenario, is a lot less money thrown at the car all at once. Versus when my DE blew, I needed to dump a LOT of money in parts In order to get the same results my stock HR motor made. Also in my personal experience there was constantly issues with the DE in comparison to the HR.

@micvelo 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for a great explanation of the differences. I have owned every generation of Z car and have had every engine from L24 I6 to VQ37VHR in my '12 Z34N. I have long been critical of those that say the "HR is better and the DE is junk!" All I can say is "Well, it is and it had better be. It's newer, evolved." Stands to reason that the VHR is arguably a better engine than the '07-08 HR, yes? Again, it better be. And what about the Red Sport VR30DDTT (from the Q50S Red Sport), rumored to be the next Z's (Z35) engine? Is it the supreme Z engine? Again, it better be. Point is, so many "HR is king" people seem to think if they have an HR car, they're so much better than those of us who "only" have DEs. Get over it. And while you're at it, stop referring to '07-08 Z cars (and the matching HR engine Q-cars) as "an HR". It's just a 350Z that happens to have the next evolution of the VQ35xx. After 25 Z cars over 40-some years, including some rare ones and Nismo versions, the only remaining one is my DE powered '03 which I still love dearly.

Bought a rust and damage free stripped 2004 z and put it back together using a rolled 2008 z. The HR motor is a beast, way more rev happy and fun to drive than my previous 03 z that I sold. If you want to build the ultimate naturally aspirated car cheaply the HR is the way to go, HR block, heads and rods with a 3.7 crank and special 12.5:1 JWT pistons along with tomei 272 or 280 cams would be one sick street engine.

Nice! Liked and sub'd. This is the most informed DE vs HR video that I've seen yet. Even linked to the Nissan motor publications. I also have a copy of a leaked Nissan ppt slide deck with even more info. I bought a new 2006 "DE-revup" 350z manual which had oil consumption issues. I dumped that car early on for a new 2007 HR which I still own today. The HR was/is noticeably faster. But why? The 2006 was rated for 300 HP and the 2007 was rated for 'only' 306 HP. Truth is, up through 2006, Nissan was not using SAE ratings to publish horsepower. Laws changed in 2007 that SAE ratings were required so Nissan built a new engine. I have a dyno sheet with both 2006 (Throttle body spacer) and stock 2007 numbers run on the same dyno and in the upper RPMs (5k-7k), the DE falls off and the HR has a 40HP advantage between 6k and 7k. My 2007 stock was putting down 262 HP at the wheels and with bolt-ons and tune, it's up to 301HP at the wheels. These are dynojet, SAE corrected numbers. So 40 HP difference stock plus 40 HP from bolt-ons and it's surprisingly faster than a stock DE. Below 4500 RPM, the HR only has a slight advantage. Biggest HR win though is that it has a dedicated oil dipstick tube :-). DE dipstick uses an engine oil return passage so it's herd to get a clear read. Another great advantage of HR is that the hot coolant return from the engine is routed to the radiator externally keeping that heat out of the engine. I'm, keeping my HR 350z till the wheels fall off.

To be honest, I'd side with the DE over the HR, the reason being that replacing the GM3800. while the 3800 has been abuse-proof I like the VQ noise, and retrofitting that in place of the geriatric donk would inject a lot of life into my ol' bore-a-door. Ignoring mating up the 'mission to the engine, I wonder if a more lively bent six would be better than the factory lazy six as a daily.

Which one is better is really dependent on the use of the engine & budget. The HR is more expensive to purchase and you will need a more advanced ECU to run the dual VVT. Having said that, even though the DE is cheaper to purchase, what would it take to get the DE to make the "300HP" that the HR does? NA: Cams, valve seats & compression bump (then you might have to look at alternative fuels) Boosted: Lots of heat, complexity & cost. I haven't run these numbers but it is likely that your $per HP is better spent on an HR. Get the HR with a good ECU, beautiful sounding exhaust & then do a ridiculous burnout!

One thing I never see discussed is the cam crossover at 4000-4200rpm in the HR. It's almost like a Vtec effect that hits and is followed by an increase in sound and power. I guess it's part of Nissan's 'Swell' they talk about when tuning the power delivery/powerband.

The VQ35HR is one of my favorite V6's out there. I loved it in my 07 G35sport sedan when it debuted on the Infiniti side. Simple bolt ons and tune had it putting great power out while revving sewing machine smooth to the high 7k rpm range. Now, I have a built VQ35DE and I do enjoy the simplicity of things under the boosted setup. All in all, the VQ series family of engines are fun to roll around stock or build to suit your needs. @@GhostOfBrickCity yes sir, first you want to make sure your spark plugs, injectors, mass airflow sensors, o2 sensors, and engine compression are good. 9 times out of 10 your car simply is guzzling gas because it isnt reading its own performance correctly. From what I have seen the power difference between the two is much larger than this. I have talked to a lot of people, dyno results Sean to be in between 230-255whp on a DE where an HR can hit the 300whp on a dyno all day. This is just what I have gathered from countless people at the drift track. I have a HR I am currently putting in my 240. The power difference alone was well worth the money spent but when you look at some of the other differences in the engineering the HR really is nothing short of a”built” motor capable of taking astonishing amounts of abuse. Granted I bought a totaled HR Z and parting the car out is basically paying for the cost of the motor anyways, no loss in getting the HR. The price difference between a drivable DE vs HR 350z can be insane though.

The internals on an HR are 80% stronger than the DE. DE can hold up to 400whp safely. HR can hold between 500-550whp safely, but I have seen over 600whp on stock internals. Best to cap at 500whp on HR. Regardless of which platform, maintenance is key to keeping your engine strong and reliable. I have an 08 Z, almost fbo (need headers and replace gutted cats with test pipes) 160,000+ miles, 314whp 271wtq, 12.97 1/4 mile at 108.
