I have a 2004 350Z with the de. It has 100 1000 miles I just bought it. I have not driven it yet per se but I have been working on it it had 4 oil leaks both rear valve cover spark plug cylinders were holding oil camshaft position sensor as well as oil cooler o-ring. My biggest expense was replacing the valve covers which cost $50 for both on eBay and now there's no oil leaks and it runs fantastic I feel I will got my money's worth. It's the touring Edition hardtop and I paid $6,800. Even after fixing all the oil leaks I still got my money's worth. it's all stock no mods and I look forward to enjoying it for a long time

Pretty common for valves to fail on the z they use alot of torque and have high pressure from all that natural aspiration I would change or check them every year for leaks ans every 3-5 years for optimal performance as well as regular tube ups like oil change , spark plugs , gaskets , crankshaft & camshaft sensors as well most common parts to fail aside from belts and tire wear it’s a solid block of maintained right

My 07 M35 has been such a damn good car. It’s at 125k miles and still feels tight as a drum. I replaced the radiator at about 110k miles and the washer fluid pump around the same time and that’s basically it. From the way it starts, sounds, idles and drives, it honestly feels like a new car. It doesn’t burn any oil. I check it every couple of weeks. Of course most modern cars can last a very long time if properly maintained and the same is true for these VQ engines. If you take good care of them, there’s really nothing stopping them from going 200k, even 300k miles. Many of them bite the dust before that point because they’re owned by people who have no interest in maintaining their cars and simply don’t care enough to keep up with it. They’re just gonna drive it until it has problems and then sell it. Avoid those cars at all costs.

Korean cars keep getting better but as far as I know, generally speaking, Japanese engineering and build quality is still No. 1. What is it about Nissan and timing chain tensioners though? They have been a weak point for them in all their high performance motors for about thirty years now! Wtf??

Dave L if you are going to spend 15 grand building a VQ motor you might as well do an LS or 2JZ swap. Thats what Im leaning toward doing, why build a motor that can only at best hold 450 hp, when you can build a motor that has unlimited horsepower gain potential like the others mentioned. 2j is still efficient and reliable at 1000 hp, unless you are a crazy nut if you've ever been in a 500 horse anything, that is scary enough let alone a 1000 hp ass rocket😁. My 350z's almost 300 hp is good enough for me right now. Things can get pretty crazy in a 350Z quick if you dont know what you are doing or under estimate its abilities.
@VenturiLife
@VenturiLife 4 жыл бұрын
Chain tensioners fail on other cars like Fords etc. I think it has to do with the design and how much load ends up on the tensioners. They will wear over time, develop slop / rattle and eventually break etc. The chain should pretty much last the life of the regular car. The saving grace is tensioners usually give you indications they are on their way out and are going to fail first.

I have a 2004 350Z and a 2014 Infiniti Q60S. In a comparison, the old 350Z has a LOT more bottom end torque then the Infiniti's 3.7L engine. From 600 - 3500 rpm, the old 350 has a lot more pull when accelerating where as the Infiniti starts to shine above 4000 RPM. Both cars have six speed manual transmissions. What is funny is that the 0-60 and top speed specs for the 2004 350Z and the 2014 Infiniti Q60S with a six speed are exactly the same. I found that funny and interesting. Also, the gearing is identical in both cars. By this I mean, they run at the same RPM relative to the same speed down the road. As for my 350, I have no issue with oil consumption. Yes, there is that start up rattle and at 100K miles I had my water pump and my timing chains and tentioner replaced.
@archangele1
@archangele1 5 жыл бұрын
One thing. I replace the oil in both my Infiniti and my 350Z every 3K miles with Mobil 1. Both the 3.5L and the 3.7L engines are very VERY unforgiving with respect to dirty oil and this is the number one reason for oil consumption. What happens is if you let the oil in for, like 5K miles or more, the engine will build up varnish and sludge which blocks the return passages in the heads causing oil to stay on top of the cylinder head and where the PCV valve system can suck it up. This is what causes most of the oil consumption in these engines. This can occur in as little as 20K miles if you don't change the oil enough and or use cheap or wrong oil. This issue also affects the newer 3.5L and the 3.7L Nissan V6's.

A lot of the power difference in that engine had to do with ECU mapping which at the time was fairly new and kind of complicated. Couples with different intake and exhausts. A lot of us back at that time were taking the lower plenums and having them machined to gain more power you would also gain an enormous amount of power by changing the headers due to the fact that they were so restricted from factory at least in the U.S. market

@VenturiLife
@VenturiLife 4 жыл бұрын
Engine longevity doesn't interest them. They want more power out of a smaller powerplant for driveability, and can sometimes offer more fuel savings. The mass-consumer market pushes it, and they can save on engine production cost now that turbos are ubiquitous and relatively cheap components, rather than exotic things they were in the past. A lot of transmissions going CVT also, or automatic, and manuals are becoming very rare.

Thanks for the detailed education about my new car. I picked a 2003 350z up and it was babied. Only 26k original miles and I love it. I knowledge on all cars is limited, but now I’m getting into this car and I’m probably going to put a vortec supercharger complete kit on it. The car already has a cold air intake aftermarket rims adjustable suspension etc. I’m wondering what other modifications you would recommend I’m thinking about some aftermarket headers and exhaust and also the Plenum spacer throttlebody and I’m not sure about a bigger cam or not. I don’t want it to be a headache for me and I understand more horsepower more headaches but it seems like this system with this motor is pretty reliable. It could be my every day, but not really because I have a roofing company with trucks I drive trucks all the time so this is my little gold card/missile I think and I’m getting educated through videos from guys like yourself and I appreciate that thank you very much

Definitely a plenum spacer I have the 5/16th Blox spacer. While you're installing it I recommend giving everything a good cleaning. Change the plugs and coil packs while everything is apart. You could also do a throttle body coolant bypass. I got the spacer for $87 on ebay, 6 brand new coil packs $46, 6 NGK Laser Platinums spark plugs $22 all on ebay. Those plugs are normally 8 a pop. I also installed new valve covers so that's why I did everything. I painted the plenum too. Doing all of that really brought the engine back to life. It hauls ass and screams now. The plenum is never hot, no matter how hard I drive it. I also have a cold air intake, I relocated my k&n come air filter in the driver's side bumper insert. It did take about 500-800 miles for the ecu to sort everything out. So if this happens don't be alarmed. I kept getting codes for running too lean. I did the idle relearn, throttle body relearn and ecu reset after every code. Then it just went away and it's been driving just fine. Oh yeah I installed an oil catch can for both bank 1 and bank 2 it's a baffled closed system that returns back to the lower plenum. This has cut back on oil consumption. It catches all kinds of nasty crap that normally gets sent back through the intake to be burned off. I have 207k miles by the way and it's driving so strong. So yours is a rare gem, they'll last forever as long as you maintain them.

A failed tensioner is unlikely to ever break a timing chain, as they are made of softer materials than steel, which the chain is made from, but they can break / snap off, and make an incredible racket and obviously detrimentally affect timing. They are a fairly simple fix, but labour intensive to get at. I know this because I had one fail in a Ford straight 6 engine (I-6 motor) once. Super-annoying problem if it happens though.

Just picked up an 03 r50 with the same motor. Having a hard time finding performance parts for it so wouldn't parts meant for an 03 350z fit the pathfinder motor? Haven't been able to find any info about it, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Picked up a running pathfinder with the VQ for crazy cheap and as the trans starts to slip im thinking about putting the vq35de in my miata. Anyone here done a "refresh" on one? Is it worth it seeing as i already have the motor it should be cheaper to tune and build than buying a k series or something

Easy. Look at the rev gauge on the dash. Redline starts at 6.5k, if it's the rev up the redline is at 7k.

The Rev up version of the VQ35DE adds an variable exhaust timing cams. So (visually) there are two circles on each of the camshaft covers, on both the left side and right side of the motor. One solenoid mounted to each of the cam shaft covers. Facing the front of the motor Left side has a green solenoid connector, the right side has a blue connector. the VIN number will tell you also
